GTA V PC Performance Thread

Are you using the beta drivers? My 7950 is on the same bus but I'm still on the official drivers. I'll try the beta drivers tonight when I get home.
I hope AMD gets it together with the new drivers. My 7970 is firmly on the struggle bus.

Damn. I thought there would be no problems there.
Try the latest drivers and report back please.

7970Ghz 3GB here,

ed: Arsenic13 to the rescue. New drivers it is.

I've added a Tools section to the OP with some useful tools, let me know what you guys think and if there is anything else you would like me to add.

No, I was going to, but since they said new drivers would be out today I held off from installing them last night. If the new version is not up by the time I get home I will go ahead and install 15.4.

Edit:
Really? Cause my 7970 is working great with the new drivers.

Well then, I should have just installed them from the start.

What will it take to get a consistent 60fps with a 980 and a 3770k (OCed to 4.2) in this game? I see a lot of people saying MSAA is a performance killer. Thinking about picking this up at the end of the week if I'm done with my second play through of Bloodborne by that time.

What do you all use to determine FPS? I have a 670 and I'm going to run the game at 1440p using the GeForce Experience recommended settings and I want to see what I get.

The game has a benchmark available from the Graphics menu. You have to complete the intro of the story mode first or else it won't work right.

I'm running it at 1440p with a similar setup, with every single setting turned up, except grass, and MSAA at 2x and getting probably an average of about 55fps downtown. It runs like a dream on a 980.

So after the benchmark is run, where do the results go? I obviously see the counter moving during the benchmark itself - but I was kind of expecting a log detailing highest/lowest/average framerate.

thanks, i dont usually believe in double dipping but fuck me if I'm not tempted to get this. damn it.

There is a benchmark tool built into the game, but I have also just updated the OP with a tools section that might have what you're looking for :)

Is there a way to individually enable/disable cards in the Nvidia display settings? I'd like to see the difference between 3x TitanX SLI and 4X.

You can use Nvidia Inspector and disable them...I think.

Other than that if your motherboard has individual PCIe lane switches that you can flip on/off, that's the only other way. BTW if you have 4 cards, you should definitely look into getting a board with this feature. It is a life saver. I used it all the time when trouble shooting, and had to use it yesterday when I installed these fresh Game Ready drivers.

I'd consider it absolutely essential if I was running 4 cards.

Can we get a list of settings that would cause the most gpu usage? Like MSAA and such?

Runs pretty well on the 7970.

1080p
FXAA on
MSAA off
Everything else maxed out except for distance scaling and shadow scaling and I get 40-60 fps during the day and pretty much locked 60 at night. Definitely considering adding a second 7970 now so I can bump up AA. Gonna mess around with some stuff to see what will get me a near-locked 60 fps.

As a side note, shadows set to very high produces some very cool looking shadows at night from your headlights.

I'm eating tons of crow on this one. I didn't think Rockstar would optimize this so well. Amazing.
Thanks, Piggus!

What do you think it would make the performance better? More RAM, better CPU or VGA?

i5-2500k @ 3.9 GHz
GTX 980
8 GB RAM
Windows 7

I'm getting some crazy stuttering while driving, and occasionally while turning the camera (whenever there's a fuckin' tree around). Not sure what settings I should turn down to get locked 60; I have pretty much everything set to High, which has been enough for a lot of people with builds similar to mine.

Maybe it's just time to upgrade my CPU :(

I was getting it occassionally too on a 2500k @ 4.0ghz and 970, I figured it was probably a streaming issue since I'm still on a mechanical HD.

Are you using an SSD or mechanical?

I'm hoping its not the CPU causing it. I can definitely overclock further if need be.

Ouch. I hope not. i have a similar setup but a gtx 970 and i7920@4ghz, Don't let me down now :(

Mechanical, since my mechanical drive is much, much bigger than my SSD. That's a good idea though; I'll try switching it over later today to see if it makes a difference.

Running the game on an old i5-750 @ 2.67Ghz, 8GB memory, and an ATi HD 5850.

I can play at 1080p with high textures and default settings at around 60fps, with a few drops here and there. I won't be going any higher than this.

Overall I'm impressed, runs better than IV did and I can't wait for the mods.

Awesome. I'll be running an i3-3220 with R9 280x, so I'll expect just about the same hopefully. If my dual core can't keep 60 fps, I'll set the textures up high and run at 30.

So, finally got a chance for initial impressions:

- MSAA definitely tanks fps big time.
- Dialed down post processing to high to reduce CA.
- Benchmarking still drops to 39fps in 4K.
- Microstutters at night during heavy traffic.

Apart from that, it's pretty much smooth sailing, ~70-80fps in the city, but still need to tweak it a bit more since it's still down to ~40fps in the country. Probably will need to reduce draw distance. Still plenty of room for improvement.

Shots are 4K downsampled via DSR to 1080p.

Really hoping at some point R* state what settings are needed to get PS4 & Xbox One visuals, I'm always interested in how my PC holds up to PS4 visual settings.

I don't know what's going on with TXAA in this game but it seems to make aliasing worse. I could see more jaggies on large obvious street furniture like telegraph poles. Here's some screens:

And a direct comparison

Look at the telegraph poles, overhead wires and shadows on the opposite side of the street. Here again with MSAAx4, less obvious but still worse looking once TXAA is on:

And the direct comparison

While I was at it, I took some screens of the shadow softness options, these go PCSS/Softest/Softer/Soft:

These screens are from the game being played at 1080p on a 980/3770k. Settings used here:

I was using MSAAx4 but I found that as you pan the camera round past grassy areas, there was noticeable chug. Dropping to 2x got rid of that.

I haven't found a single game where I've liked TXAA. I get that it helps with temporal aliasing, but I usually think it looks way too soft and the performance hit is really high most of the time. I would opt for FXAA over it any day of the week.

SMAA would have been a great option. Hopefully they can patch it in or someone can get it working.

Anything sort of MSAA chews up FPS way too much, so its FXAA for now.

You would Smokey. I am running at 4k with everything set to the max with the exception of not using MSAA, I have it turned off, FXAA On, but every other possible slider is set to the max and in the city at night and during the day it is rock solid 60fps. The only time I can get it to dip is I go to the country side where this is a lot of vegetation/grass etc, and then I get drops to the mid-50's, but it is only briefly.

Got to admit that the scaling is pretty good and the game seems very well optimized from my brief experience so far. I am actually surprised at 4k that I am able to run with everything at max except for MSAA. Using MSAA, I do get drops in high populated areas to about 45fps or so, but at 4k, MSAA even FXAA is not doing too much to improve the IQ.

Extremely impressed so far.

I'll turn MSAA off later today. I just like to see how a game runs even with settings that are not required at 4k, MSAA being one of them. Should hit 60fps easy.

Has there been a fix for the 59Hz issue? My desktop says 60Hz. Nvidia Control Panel says 60Hz. Running at full screen in GTA 5. This is the only game to ever do this for me.

Are you CPU or GPU bound or both?

Just curious as I have i5 750 OCd to 3,8 GHz and GTX760 and considering getting GTAV, but concerns about performance with that old CPU :b

What are people using for frame rate and GPU stats, etc? I have RivaTuner but doesn't seem to work on GTAV. That said I'm at almost MAX settings at 4K downscaled and it's definately above 30fps, close to 60 if not a smidge lower. This is with a 980, 3770k@4.5ghz and 8GBDDR3.
So I must say, damn fine looking and damn fine performance so far. Quite easily one of the best PC games (performance wise) I've ever played.

so, my last try getting it to work. Alt-tabbing is a guaranteed crash and something causes the RAM usage to spike and windows throws an error about low memory and the game minimizes and crashes...

This is going to be a fun one to get working

I had that too:

I've seen mentioned this issue where only 59Hz appears in the in-game refresh rate options, I get the same thing whether playing on my monitor or PC. In fact, 59Hz is listed twice for some reason. It does indeed lock to 59fps which was giving me judder/stutter. The only way I could get smooth 60fps was disabling in-game V-Sync, enabling it in the Nvidia Control Panel and locking to 60fps using RTSS. Runs much better now.

^That should say "monitor or TV"!

The frame dips are maddening. A fender bender sends a quick dip from 60 to the 40s. I've tinkered around with the settings and nothing seems to make a difference. All the maxed out graphics setting do is affect the max fps from my limited time with it.

Gtx 970 ssc
I5 3570k @ 3.4
8gb ram

i5 2500k
660 ti
8gb ram
ssd

I have most settings on high or very high, MSAA off or 2x, depth of field off, I might have messed with other post processing effects to lower them a little.

But with my setup and a little tweaking I have the game looking excellent and running without any stutters. Turning off depth of field was the biggest performance gain I found.

Can we get a list of settings that would cause the most gpu usage? Like MSAA and such?

Sure, I can add something to the tips, trick & tweaks section. For now I just have grass set to ultra dropping fps, I'll add MSAA as well. As far as I know that's the two big ones for now.

Does using more VRAM lower ur fps?

Using more VRAM than available on GPU can cause FPS drops, stuttering etc. as assets needs to be swapped in and out of memory on regular basis. Running game from SSD can lessen these issues as read and write from SSD is a lot faster than from regular HDD.

i'm struggling to get 1080p 60fps.

i5-4590, 8GB, R9 290 4GB

only way i can get it is turning textures and stuff down and turning aliasing off. and even there are HUGE frame dips. becomes unplayable in grassy areas. drops to about 25fps. lots of stuttering/graphic glitches.

Shadow quality is also a pretty big one, also frees up a few hundred mb of GPU memory.

You should be fine. While old the 1st gen i series are still fine for gaming especially with a 1ghz overclock.

Hey I read your earlier posts about your framerate. I'm running at 3440*1440p using Titan X SLI and my fps are good but I can't max MSAA or distance scaling like you. Think its due to you having a 4930k and me 4970k? Cheers.

I have an i5 750@stock, HD 7970ghz 3GB, and 8GB RAM.

I'm not even going to bother getting this game even though I'd like to play it because I know I'd be disappointed with my performance and unable to really enjoy the game. :(
