GTA V PC Performance Thread

How do you use it? Supposedly I need to use the playgtav.exe file, but I don't have that in my Steam directory, just GTA5.exe and GTAVlauncher.exe.

Install SweetFX/ReShade into the following directory = \Steam\SteamApps\Common\Grand Theft Auto V\

taken from here

https://sfx.thelazy.net/games/game/938/

its another preset, but basically extract the sweetfx folder into the GTA 5 folder you have. inside the sweetfx folder there is a config file called Sweetfx_settings.txt. take the preset config you want to try and rename it to that and replace the default .txt file.

also make sure the ReShade64.dll is renamed to dxgi.dll and also placed in the GTA 5 folder. check the readme inside the Reshade 0.18.0 release for these steps but thats the main work you have to do!

thats it. enable/disable Sweetfx with scrolllock in game.

Thanks, that worked. Unfortunately I'll probably leave it off, because I get drops of up to 10FPS in the more intensive areas (like Sandy Shores), and the slight improvement to AA isn't particularly worth it. This is with K-Putte's config.

I find that 4xMSAA+TXAA + SweetFx Lumasharpen filter (strength 1.00) looks pretty great. Needs of course pretty beefy hardware too, haven't tried in the most forested areas yet.

I WISH I could run the game with all that on and get a consistent 60. You're right, it's the best looking combination possible, but man the grassy areas just annihilate your framerate with 4x MSAA on.

I hope either Rockstar or Nvidia can get a patch out that addresses this performance issue. Not sure what they can do, but hopefully there's a solution.

I'm going to post this again, but anybody got a fix for shadows looking like this (stole the screenshot from someone else)?

CDlNUR8.jpg

I've tried a few different combination of settings from normal all the way up to very high/ultra plus the advanced settings and I can't seem to get rid of it.

Is it an aliasing setting I need to change or a shadow setting?

What is your shadow setting currently? If it's low, there will be aliasing but using soft shadows can hide it pretty decently.

I have the same issue, especially shadows in the distance have no aliasing it seems and flicker.

Also I have an issue with painted lines on the road not being aliasing. MSAA x3, TXAA on, A-Filtering x16 forced in nvidia CPL.

This is what I get :(

Even with high quality shadows in the advanced menu?
Yup, just tested that - still pretty clear aliasing if the shadow is cast at certain angles from interior lights. Same goes for street lights at night. The only 'clean' shadows are the ones cast from sunlight, and those have their own LOD boundary problems.

I first noticed it with street lights and the shadows cast by guard rails.

My current shadow settings are very high and softest. No extended shadows or high res shadows.

Well shit, I'm at the Blitz Play mission atm and crashing to desktop every single time the game switches from Franklin to Michael driving up the hills. I'd call that gamebreaking bug... what a buzzkill!

Turn Landing Page on, and restart game. Do not let the game autoload.

I think the landing page fix should be added to the OP, feels like it gets asked every second page or so haha

You know, I've grown really tired of posting the same answer since tens of pages ago. But people don't even read the last page, I don't know who will read the OP at this point.

I give up trying to chase a stable 60, I'm going to settle for 4K/45+ because I have done nothing but tweak the damn settings and not playing the game.

Yep. I stopped caring. I'm fine with my 60fps 95% of the time with some dips to 50s. Good enough. Too much time tweaking and not enough time enjoying this great game.

I'm about to give up on this piece of shit fucking game. I disabled all my overclocks and cranked down the graphics trying to find out what's causing the game to crash every fucking time in the middle of the first story heist (not the intro, the jewelery store with Franklin).

What the fuck. Every time I get out of the tunnel on the motorcycle the game crashes. Fuck this game.

Your not by chance aiming your weapon are you? That caused the first heist mission to crash for me. I got passed it by not shooting in my vehicle and just ramming the cops with the truck once I reached Micheal

Do you have Landing Page turned off in the options menu by any chance?

That was causing a crash during heists for me and others here. Turning it back on fixed it.

are you on a gsync monitor?

Nope, still need to upgrade.

Surely it can't smooth out drops from 60 to 44 fps :P

Aiming while in vehicle was causing the crash with landing pad disabled for me too.

i just got mine, and 44 fps on gsync feels very diff from 44 fps on a regular monitor. i dont know how you play at 44 fps.

Stop aiming while you're in a vehicle. If you use a throwable (the smoke canisters) and then get in a vehicle and aim, it crashes. You don't need to shoot at all in that mission anyway.

1. You say this as if it's my fault and I'm doing it wrong.
2. I'm not shooting. It just crashes as soon as the character change occurs.

Landing page fixed it. Thanks guy!

Offline and with a controller so far. It's not bad at all, RTSS keeps it nice and locked so it isn't dropping to 44fps, it's staying there. Wouldn't play counter strike like this but I'd rather have the nicer graphics with GTA and no big changes like 60->40.

I agree that lower framerates are far more of a hinderence in online games like CS, but framerates that arent a locked 30 or 60 generally look/feel like crap on pc monitors. Even if you cap the framerate with a 3rd party utility. Gta 5 in particular feels worse than most titles. For this title gsync is a much better upgrade than a new gpu

Can you do anything about the crashing?

My game crashes after 2-3 restarts in a Heist or when I try to shoot when I'm in a vehicle.

It's sooo fuckin annoying.

Game has crashed three times now during the "friends reunited" mission. Seems stable performance wise based on very high settings, except this mission. I plant the sticky bombs, blow everything up and then crash when I start driving. Once i made it to about a mile from Los Santos and it crashed. Wasn't aiming in the vehicle and the landing page is on.

Any ideas, or wait for a patch? :(

Landing Page On, delete cfg.dat and pc_settings.bin in C:\Users\USERNAME\Documents\Rockstar Games\GTA V\Profiles\6A0D4B32. Fixed it for me (was having the exact same crash at the exact same time)

So once i do the AO workaround I don't have to keep doing it when I restart the game each time?

I'd like to know this too.

No, it persists as long as you leave the AO setting on High.

For those getting crashes in missions which involve sticky bombs don't throw the sticky bombs while having it equipped, switch to sticky bomb and then switch to your gun, you can then quick-throw the sticky bomb by holding aim + G (or whatever your Throw Grenade button is in the key bindings). This solved the crashes for me which happened while aiming in a vehicle.

I keep having a crash to desktop and afterwards I'm kicked out of Rockstar Social,

I think it states that I'm logged in somewhere else

Anything I can do about this problem? Seems to always happen halfway through a mission, but never in free roam

EDT: Okay its consistently crashing during a certain point in a mission. I'm going to stop playing until a patch comes out

Don't know if this is any help to anyone, but the only time I had crashes (2 or 3 total) was when I had MSAAx4 on. Now I have MSAAx2 and haven't had any crashes in 50 hours play. My pet theory is that if your GPU is flat out, it's more likely to crash - perhaps the current Nvidia driver isn't completely stable with GTAV.

Worth trying, anyway. Give your GPU some headroom!

Gambled on being able to run it smoothly on my laptop and I do, luckily. Downloaded the 'gta5 driver' for my lenovo y510p 755m SLI and it's smooth on decent settings. That is after I turned SLI back on, it got deactivated for some reason. Tried to run the game before this update and it was a mess.

Came someone please tell me, if i were to restore my computer completely, as in put a fresh copy of windows on there and wipe my drives, what do i need to save for my gta v save. i dont care about losing my other saves but i wanna make sure to keep my gta save.

Backup C:\Users\<user>\Documents\Rockstar Games\GTA V and paste it on the same location after restoring your OS. I did this when I moved to a fresh Win8.1 and it works fine so far.
