Guild Wars preview event this weekend - early impressions

Er I've been playing the beta's since they started. Its not that much better at all.. I actually like PSO more :D They're both great though.. The weapons and inventory just really suck in GW so far..

I played for about 3-4 hours so far. I'm a level 6 Elementalist/Warrior - character name is now officially Drakken Freund.

This beta seems pretty good. There are a lot more quests than the previous GW betas that I played in, and the environments are nice. Right now I'm in the Catacombs. I guess I'll leave Ascalon (through the gate by Tydus) after this.

Some of us should party up sometime. :)

I really only have two issues with the game - neither of which have really been resolved to my satisfaction.

1) When you first start the game or go to a new area there's an icon in the upper-right corner, I guess showing how much data you've streamed down. I wish they'd do all of this at the loading screen (otherwise what's it's point?), because this seriously lags my game until it's finished and I can hardly move two steps without MAJOR stuttering.

2) I find it difficult to click on enemies when trying to target. The enemies and your allied melee characters tend to clump together in battle so it's hard trying to click on an enemy to target if you want to pick out a specific one. This is exacerbated by the fact that my character uses ranged attacks mainly so the characters are generally smaller on the screen because they're in the distance - making it that much harder. I wish there was a button that let you cursor through the enemies on the screen. Maybe there is and I've just never known about it though.

A lot of people have complained about that. This is a problem for me as well. I REALLY hope they do something about this, because it makes battle frustrating.

I don't get major lag like you are reporting when I enter a new area and it's still stream in the zone to me. In fact, I don't think that's ever happened to me while playing. The idea is that they can push out the content, updates, etc. while you're playing and not have it interfere with your ability to play the game. So far for me, it works great. Also, it should be point out that in the beta, you're downloading art, models, textures, etc. When the game ships, most of that will install on from the CD, so the amount of data being streamed should be a lot less. In theory anyway. :)

I think I might be picking this up as well.

So who knows what's better? EBGames' exclusive bow preorder item, or Gamestop's war pick?

More online games are doing this now. EQII uses the same tech MS does with Windows Update to push new files to you in the background.

Went for EBGames' bow preorder bonus, since any class can use it. I imagine the same is not true of the war pick Gamestop offers.

check your mail. :)

Again, thank you very much! :)

I went with the War Pick from gamestop.com. My main character is going to be an elementalist/warrior, so I'll be able to use it.

Is anyone gonna be on tonight? I'm signing on now (Drakken Freund). I think I'm going to move into the Post-Searing Ascalon.

Btw, have you guys tried figuring out /commands you can do in the game? So far, I know about dance, wave, jump, sit, moan, cheer, flex, laugh, and clap. There's probably a list somewhere.

Then again, the EBGames one was $10 cheaper. How exactly is everyone getting on 1.5 months early?

So far I've been having a pretty good time again this weekend, but I've been plaqued with a bunch of disconnects. TOnight while playing with some friends I kept getting bounced with an "Err= -7" or some such crap, about every 20 mins or so. Meanwhile, My friend on a slow dial-up connection is clicking right along. Very frustrating. Argh!

I was getting a bit frustrated running around getting killed so much and then realized you can recruit NPC's to join your party... I added a healer, archer, and fighter to my party and ravaged the countryside grabbing a ton of loot in the process. I can't believe I didn't realize you could do this.

Holy shit. Had I not just preordered it a few hours ago, you just sold it to me, Tort.

Do the mercs work like regular characters, or are they gimped versions ala Diablo II?

They are somewhere inbetween, but fall on the positive side because of how good their AI is. You cannot give them items or armor or anything but they are really smart in battle and act as if you are groups with a smart group of other players that look to you as their leader. I did a map once through with a regular group and then again with the NPC group and I had more fun with the NPC group because they acted as if they knew what they were doing and didn't make dumb mistakes such as pulling 10 guys at once. If you attack a mob, they will focus on that mob only so you do not get giant pulls and can get rid of the strongest guys first. The healer was so good that his last act before getting killed at a boss was to rez me and I was able to then rez the rest of the party.

That sounds fantastic. You can't equip them, fine. But do they level up? How long will they stick with you? If they don't level up, can you eventually hire increasingly stronger mercs? Will I be sinking all of my money into that? Lol.

I am not sure if they level up or not... They seemed to be at about the same level as me. I did not level while running around so I am not sure what happenes. When I traveled from zone to zone on foot they followed me, but when I warped back to the main city they were gone.

MAF - It comes out April 26th

Been having a blast so far.

We should start a GAF band.

Heh, those are pretty good. Here are some more to try:

/excited, /beckon, /salute, /chest, /bored, /no, /yes, /chest, /help, /point

There's also some type of scared one, but I'm not sure what it is.

Did they completely redesign Ascalon City?

There are two versions. Pre- and Post- Searing. After the Searing, there isn't much left and the land surrounding it is completely decimated. If you follow the quests along, eventually you'll have to cross over into the Post-Searing Ascalon.

I'm aware of that, but I clicked into it last night (I haven't really had time to do much playing during this beta event, this week at school is going to suck!!), and didn't recognize the area right outside "The Great Northern" wall at all (post-searing) - it seemed completely different to me. Maybe I should restart a new character or something at level 1 and play through it that way again.

Also, I know our names will be reserved once the game is released, but if we delete and start a new character can we re-use our own name?

I played the last beta event and some of this one. There's been a lot of smaller changes since the last one, all of which have been for the best. Some GUI changes, writing changes, etc. It just seems to get considerably better with each beta, which is wonderful.

I've not had issues with targetting, although I can see how one would. I also have not had problems with the loading of files. A good portion of what is loaded when that little lightning bolt is on the screen can be done on the log-in menu. I just wait till it's done. When I'm in-game another one sometimes appears, but it has never affected my performance to an annoying degree.
