With Guilty Gear DS and PSP on the horizon, I decided to fire up my DS and play a little more Guilty Gear X Advance Edition. Beautifu, but ultimately a bit too easy...fun for a quick playthrough, tho, and survival mode is great.

CHARACTERS

Anji Mito--somewhat slow and powerful...fairly hard to use. His strength lies in a lot of horizontal moves, with a scant few options on the vertical side. If you like to play everything on ground level with strikes, Anji's the guy for you, but it'll take a lot of practice with guarding and finding the right moment.

Axl Low--One of the fastest characters in the game. He uses long-range with the chain sickles, combines it with a large amount of offensive capabilities in every direction, and tops it off with some great mixup moves (Raiei Sageki, for one) to just prove to be plain nasty. Pretty much the opposite of Anji.

Baiken--Very difficult, if only for the fact most of her moves have to be loaded by an action. Other than a couple of jumping loads, and a couple of unloaded specials, Baiken's arsenal is made up of guard reversals. She also has more overdrives than anyone in the game, with three being guard reversals that incapacitate one of the opponent's actions. Unless you're really good at guard reversals, don't even bother with Baiken.

Chipp Zanuff--All about speed is the only thing I can say for Chipp. Everything is reflex-fast, with a balanced movelist and a decent capability for dealing damage backing that up. His teleports and speed-warps are amazing, with a full-screen slide that zips you from side to side before it's fully apparent what goes on.

Dizzy--Appropriate to the name, Dizzy's rather awkward. The two spirits attached to her do almost everything for her, leaving Dizzy sort of just going along with the ride. She's powerful, about medium speed, and the mass amount of delayed reaction and undercutting moves she features are great for keeping an enemy off-guard.

Faust--Faust is hard to describe. His fighting style is very unorthodox, with toys and off-balance scalpel attacks. If anything, he's like a drunken version of Yoshimitsu. Hilarious attacks all around, but deadly as well with a high chance of taking an enemy off-guard. About a mid-range character, and is worth the play investment if you just want to flat-out embarass an opponent.

Jam--Easy to pick up, difficult to master. The strange thing about Jam (who is this game's Chun Li-alike) is that she has quite a few moves that can't be used unless you do a move beforehand. It's a strange concept, doing a charging move, saving it for the right time, then unleashing the fury...but somehow it works. Not one of my favorites, tho.

Johnny--Michael Jackson with a sword. He's very fruity, and most of his attacks are Jackson inspipred...But Johnny is well balanced. His real strength is the ability to mix up low/high/mid strikes, although he sacrifices some power for it.

Ky Kiske--Pretty much the Ryu of the game. He's balanced well, has the prerequisite uppercut and fireball moves (uncluding an awesome trailing fireball), and is perfect for the newbie that wants to know all the game has to offer.

May--Slow, awkward, kinda crazy, but with strength and some reach on her side. She's close in play to E. Honda, and can be an immense shitkicker, but it takes lots of patience and lots of time. Not really worth it.

Millia Rage--One of the harder characters to master. Her attacks are also somewhat awkward and unorthodox, and tends to get beaten easily by anyone with decent speed. To even use her correctly is difficult, because her moves tend to be specialized for situations and not for general purpose.

Potemkin--My favorite character in the game right now. He's super-powerful, has a reach that's way too long, and is very easy to manage. Even though he has a slight disadvantage due to some of his attacks taking a LOT of time to execute, he makes up with sheer power. Not only that, but there's a couple of really good quick-dash moves, and some air defense moves that just dominate the opposition. Hitting a launcher and then a Heavenly Potemkin Buster to end the match is one of the best feelings ever.
-As a sidenote, Extra Potemkin in GGXAE sacrifices the ability to do an unblockable earthquake-style knockdown to get moderate speed. Worth it? Damn straight.

Sol Badguy--Take what I said about Ky, add a little power, reduce a little speed, and replace the fireballs by sliding attacks--one akin to the Bogard-style ground explosions, and a fast slide into an uppercut that's hard to see coming.

Testament--I've always had a soft spot for scythe-wielders, and this is no difference. His attacks are powerful, somewhat slow, and middle range...but where he excels is in trickery and magic. Summoning creatures from the rear and back, using his crow/succubus, and even melting into the ground to appear behind an opponent are all tricks he has up his sleeve. Awesome character, but has a low ceiling on potential.

Venom--Quick about his actions, a lot of crazy things possible with pool balls and such, but I haven't used him enough to comment. Seems like a good character, but nothing that really strikes my fancy.

Zato-1--His shadow is his weapon, literally. As a player, he's somewhere between Millia Rage and Testament...Very, very strange style with a lot of potential. Great abilities, some awesome summons, but there's a lot of work I know I'll have to put into him before I can say I know how to play his game well.
