Guitar Hero: On Tour 300k sales first week

Activision has announced that its DS music game Guitar Hero: On Tour has sold more than 300,000 units in North America during its first week on sale.

The company claims this makes it the publisher's largest North American launch for a DS title by a factor of eight, and one of Activision's top 5 best-selling launches ever.

"Guitar Hero is one of the most successful entertainment properties and continues to push the boundaries of innovation with Guitar Hero: On Tour," said Mike Griffith, president and CEO, Activision Publishing.

"The game's breakthrough peripheral brings the Guitar Hero experience to the 41 million DS users in North America and Europe, where they can play anywhere, anytime."

Two Activision bosses were recently paid overUSD 6 million in bonuses as the company's merger with Vivendi - the parent company of Blizzard - is expected to be complete on or around July 9.

I've seen so, soooo many copies in stock at any store I've been in, but I supposed Activision could have just overstocked this in hopes that demand will be initially high enough without any artificial shortages.

I'm part of this problem. Well, mostly my wife but still...

The game isn't too bad really, but the guitar grip is a real pain.

Track list aside, the game is actually pretty good. Vicarious Visions deserves a toast to pulling off a fun portable version of Guitar Hero.

If any of these ****ers use it on public transport I will drop kick them in the face.

Why?

Great start for the game, though. Hopefully VV will bring the same smart approach to the Wii version of the GH:WT.

I don't have the game but I'm glad to see this. Activision did the right thing by not shoehorning a control scheme in. They took some initiative and it looks to be paying off.

Well, it's more then what I was expected.

Same here; this is a pretty interesting test of the performance of GH sans all the pseudo-rockstar emotional appeal.

Now to see whether the sales last. :lol

i do give them credit for that even though it looks stupid as hell

Couldn't bring myself to pay the price it was asking or else I'd have picked it up. Looks like I'm not causing them much distress though, which is good. The Nintendo Channel interview about its development was pretty interesting, and I wonder if that had any impact on people picking it up.

damn, you are such a scary hard ass.

Why the hell do you care if someone plays a game on the train?

Wow, I was joking.. I don't think anyone would have the balls to play this game on public transport without headphones. Just for the fear of embarrassment.
I find it tedious when people are going to and from work and somebody decides to play their music loudly on their phone or iPod speakers.

I see tons of them laying around at every store I go to. It's a stark contrast to what I saw with Guitar Hero III when that was released (especially the Wii version), but I'd imagine all those copies will be bought up within the next few weeks. The game's already a hit, but I'm not expecting console-level sales here.

That's...a lot. I think it's cool that they pulled through with the concept and seeing the benefits. I won't buy it though.

Yay Western developed & published DS game sells more than 3 copies.

i dont see how this game sold so much. not only does the control method seem akward, it cant be nearly as satisfying as a console version

I wonder if the fact that you can't pirate this game has made the sales go up.

Would an average 3rd party game sell 300,000 if it was un-piratable?

I saw a shelf full of about a dozen of these at Best Buy this morning and assumed it wasn't performing well. Guess appearances can be deceiving.

They must have shipped an ass-load of these.

Is Guitar Hero your average 3rd party game?

If it's as big of a franchise as GH, maybe.

Pretty good! Hopefully they'll start using Vicarious Visions for bigger DS games than the latest movie tie-in.

Your quote wasn't there when I hit reply, though you did do it much better. Still, I think someone who equates a fun game with the downfall of humanity isn't smart enough to get a clever joke.

Very likely. :lol
