Fans have been hoping to see a live-action take on the popular Gundam anime series for many years, and now it's happening for real​

Netflix has landed Legendary's planned live-action Gundam, now with Kong: Skull Island director Jordan Vogt-Roberts and Brian K. Vaughan attached.
Vogt-Roberts will produce and direct from a script by Vaughan, who will also executive produce.

The massively popular series has led to multibillion-dollar sales in merchandise and licensing, including animated films, video games, plastic models, toys, and books. (Gundam had a cameo in Steven Spielberg's pop-culture-obsessed Ready Player One.)
Vogt-Roberts' last feature was the 2017 monster movie. The filmmaker, repped by UTA, 3 Arts, and Jackoway Austen, is also attached to direct an adaption of the video game Metal Gear Solid.
Vaughan, the famed comic book writer turned screenwriter, is currently executive producing the series adaption of his comic series Y: The Last Man. He is repped by Verve and Ziffren Brittenham.

TBH, as long as it's not some poorly cosplayed version and have some backbone of designing convincing normal suits & mobile suits and anime hairstyle... I would be okay.

I mean.. as much I like Haman Karn - please, no fan-shaped purple hair please. Thankfully, Gundams tend to have not too wildly weird hair styles...

After watching Alice in Wonderland, I think they have a good shot of making this a decent movie. The Netflix of today isn’t the same that put out Death’s Note.

When I was younger I would have loved a hollywood gundam movie, but I have zero faith current hollywood writers will accurately convey the ideas and emotions of gundam.

And it's not like Gundam is that intellectually deep. Writers today are just really bad at their job

I'm intrigued though... although in order to get the massive followers, they also need to appeal to the ladies, that all that character shipping thing has been literally the drawing force for SEED, (Thanks to Dojinshi loving Fukuda couple) & to certain degree, 00 & Wing as well. Of course, Char was the one of the original bishonen (pretty boy) character in mostly male-centric genre of SF anime - which became an instant cultural icon.

When you think about it - many big anime SF also had that melodrama thing going on. For example Macross was one of them - that the popular talk among ladies/house wives back then were about the triangle relationship of the main character Hikaru, Misa and MInmay - not really about whole Gentran/Meltran and proto-culture.

If they go a real bone-dry SF or only politics with this, I think it will have bigger risk of falling flat. It has to walk a very fine line between "Gigantic Robot" with substantial politics & ideologies & human drama all combined. If one falls behind... it may become just another fancy CG robot movie geared towards kids, which Gundam really isn't. I hope the creators understand this. Original UC fan, like myself are very old...

I am thus more "curious" of how the Hollywood/Western creators would approach this, after several already failed, such as Dragonball...? (Not to derail the thread, but I am still waiting on Akira live action movie.. what happened?)

Yup - exactly. They were gunning for the girl group specifically in mind, and had a tremendous success in that group too. All that 19th century style aesthetics, probably played part in Japan.
Also having 5 protagonist meant 5 more variations of main Gunpla models to sell to kids. Quite apparent... but SEED - I think it's like 90% melodrama + 10% mecha fights lol.

I remember there was some backlash from U.C. fans back then, when a Gundam really became a "boy band" anime. I personally had hard time accepting G Gundam, as well... - but ultimately like we U.C fans always do, gave in and learned to be happy with what's given. (too old.. haha)

I do hope that they can bring in some Anti-war sentiment and child-soldier theme into it too. Children dragged into war story, which when you really think about it - it's the most tragic thing. But please, no Yakuza Blooded Orphans.

G Gundam was dumb fun too. I think some Gundam series take themselves way too seriously and a bit of fun gets lost in it. That's how I felt about Unicorn, Seed and Orphans. I really didn't like Seed.

I think they did right thing to be honest. I am a U.C. fan, but sometimes I feel like the storytelling is actually pretty too dry. Tomino's works are sometimes way too unfriendly and hard to digest too.
I guess the reason I love U.C. the most is because of the world and how fleshed out fans and other independent creators made them. Unfortunately a lot of non-UC Gundams tend to fail at really fleshing out other than side stories (gaidens) and etc. It's truly a shame.

I actually also enjoyed SEED - it was great popcorn drama of "oh, how could you!!!"

G Gundam, also I learned to like later on - of how hot-blooded it really was. As a real mecha fan, that I thought I grew out of "super robot" phase... it was tough pill to take, and I was pretty closed-minded, but I now also enjoy super robot stuff again too, other than my own nostalgia of growing up watching Mazinger. Heck, my favorite robot anime in 21st century is actually none other than Gurren Lagan.

And that scene in Wing.. lol. The most alpha move ever!

Though Sci-fi is making a bit of a comeback, the Expanse is pretty freaking good and shows just how good an adaptation can be, while Star Trek Discovery and Picard show how awful a sci-fi can be.

Ah yes the Gundam adaptation dilemma, Netflix promises to include many iconic mobile suits but that's a vague and scary thing to say.

Brian K Vaughn is a high quality writer in the comics industry but he always includes LGBT characters into his works, there's been some minor LGBT characters in Gundam before but not quite like how the current American film industry would do it.

I REALLY liked Kong Skull Island and while Jordan Vogt-Roberts is a passionate dude I'm a bit skeptic of his Gundam taste, War in the Pocket is an absolute masterpiece and one of the few non Tomino UC related works I can praise. On the other hand though he also thinks highly of 08th Team which I think is overrated and mediocre as hell.

A direct adaptation wouldn't work, I'd personally get some Japanese mechanical design talent hired and set it in another universe and do their own thing with a 2 hour movie and if it does well there's already room for a sequel. Don't damage what exists further in the UC the Japanese already do that on the daily.

Japanese show based on a manga.
It's a good and interesting show that my wife and I smashed our way through and enjoyed. First half was great but the 2nd half really slowed down in terms of pacing. Has the same issue that a lot of anime has, where the first half or 3/4 is fast paced and the back half is all set in a single scene or contains the final confrontation.
It's about these 3 friends who are "teleported?" to a post apocalyptic Tokyo and they have to take part in games to survive. They only have a set amount of time that they can live and completing game objectives increases that time. If they refuse to take part in games they'll be killed when their time runs out.

So yeah, it's entertaining and has an OK budget, definitely doesn't instill any faith in a Gundam production from Netflix. It needs a 150+ million budget to worth while. That's why I asked earlier in the thread if it'll have more than 10 minutes of mecha action. I predict that the majority of the film will be talking heads on terrible looking sets.

That's a very interesting writer/director pairing. Brian K Vaughn writes awesome comics, and the director has been attached to Metal Gear for a while. He did Kong: Skull Island. I'm interested for many reasons, only one of which being that Gundam is an awesome franchise.
