Gunstar Super Heroes: "What a letdown?"

Uhm.. from that text it seems as though he doesn't like any of Treasure's previous games. Why should anyone care what this dope has to say? Blargh.

Treasure's games tend to fall into one of two categories: dull, unfinished half-games like Buster's Nightmare or Stretch Panic; and wildly overambitious messes crammed with every gimmick and trick imaginable but no overall sense of cohesion to tie it all together.
No doubt Stretch Panic sucks, but Gunstar Hereos, Guardian Heroes, Silhouette Mirage, Mischief Makers, et al are overambitious messes? I don't think his opinion matches mine at all :/

I dont think he knows what hes talking about frankly. If games like sin and punishment and guardian heroes are messes then almost every other game on the market is a pig sty. If you want to talk gameplay systems that just ooze cohesion you look at games like guardian heroes and gunstar heroes.

i've tried the demo of super gunstar heroes and this game rox. It reminds me astroboy but better ^_^ can't wait to get the full game. what's the release date ?

I can see where he's coming from. I played it at E3 and it did feel kind of off-kilter, unbalanced, whatever term you want to use... the nutty pre-stage Afterburner/Thunder Blade levels seemed tacked on too... and exceedingly freaking hard (which is good or bad depending on your point of view I guess).

Treasure's GBA games can improve quite a bit in development though. I remember playing a so-called "final" Astro Boy about 5 months before it finally was released; the retail JP game was much more balanced, and the US version which came out 8 months after that was even better (wider range of difficulties, added enemies to previously empty areas, shrunk some enemies in spots to cut back slowdown, etc).

Guardian Heroes Advance, on the other hand, I'm still not quite happy with some aspects of that one...

Bottom line: The game won't be out for another 3 months, and that's an eternity in GBA dev time. I'm reserving judgment until then, because good lord, it's Treasure... if they can't make an awesome action-shmup, no one can.

I also have had doubts about it, but I haven't played it recently. Didn't have time at E3. But, I'll be unsurprised if it's not half the game the original is. I'll still buy it and probably have fun, even so.

But, all kidding aside, I'm really also let down by Gunstar Super Heroes, I didn't even play it, and it would take a FUCKING incredible game for me to call it a worthy sequel to the first one.

The reason I'm let down is that it doesn't even feel like Gunstar Heroes. The first fake pics that I posted a long time ago that a guy did (it was Gunstar Super Heroes for PSP) were too much for me. I was really hoping something similar to that to happen. And, quote me here :

"The fake pics from the PSP Gunstar were much more worthy of the Gunstar name than this GBA Alien Soldier wannabe."

Don't get me wrong, I love Treasure, but their latest efforts (minus Gradius V) were sub-par for the most part. I even think Astro Boy was really overrated. Guardian Heroes Advance play mechanics didn't even ressemble the original, the cheap hits were a little too abundant too. I feel that Gunstar Super Heroes will be the same, it will not even play like Gunstar.

^

your crazy.

and i am super excited for this. i'm pretty sure that guy's just like, stupid. not enjoying treasure games. how stupid is that.

Hehe. I'm pretty sure Hellraizah wrote pretty much exactly the same post in the thread with Gunstar Super Heroes unveiling/announcement/whatever. Nice consistancy.

I liked Astro Boy and AGH quite a bit. Never played the original on the Genny, though I do own it now. I'll probably hit that up in the weeks before the GBA game (which I'll be getting), hits. It's gotten damn good press so far, at least.

Actually, I wrote :
I'm probably one of (if not THE) biggest Gunstar fan on this board, except for the guy who's name is gunstarhero, and I'm really disappointed by this. It looks like a mix between Alien Soldier, Gunstar Heroes and Astro Boy : Omega Factor.

First off, 1 player Gunstar game doesn't start the description very well. It's clear that this game is crippled thanks to the GBA low resolution. It would have been really nice on DS or PSP (or better yet, home consoles). I was disappointed by Advance Guardian Heroes, and I don't expect much from this one either.

It doesn't bode well for Metal Slug 1.....
So you really ain't far from the truth.

And, just for the kick of it, this was one of the screen I found back then that is the backbone of the disappointment concerning the official unveiling for me

I dunno, but I'd rather anticipate games that actually exist. And the GBA game looks like it's gonna be HOT, PSP's graphical potential aside.

Thanks for the hits, guys! <3

Don't worry, Treasure whores, you're gonna cream yourself for Super Heroes. Unfortunately, Sega's already rapped my knuckles for nearly saying too much about GSH before the embargo's up, so I can't justify my comments yet. But I will say that the DS' library of callow tech demos has really caused the charm of said demos to wear thin, no matter how impressive.

I don't really understand why Sega would want to be so secretive about this game. I mean, it's not like it's Halo 3, I don't think it's gonna be a super mainstream success. Anyways, I've checked the long video on 1up and my idea about the game changed a bit. The bosses are similar to the first one, the Gunstar feel (music, ennemies, graphics) is somewhat present.

I still don't think it's going to beat the first Gunstar (1 player VS 2 players, not even a question) but hey, I'll buy it anyways, just to show support to 2D gaming, hoping I'll enjoy it (probably) and hoping that sales will be enough to warrant another sequel on another console .

I like every treasure game made on the genesis other then Light crusader , stuff they made in the 32 bit times was a mixed bag, I bought gaurdian heroes during my saturn ebaying days and I have to say I can't figure out all the praise it's a decent but slightly flawed beat em up, so even at its best its still just a beat em up. Stretch panic was pretty terrible , never played that tiny toons game. Meanwhile the portable stuff they've done- I like that astroboy game , didn't much care for GH advance and Gunstar superheros looks decent .

I don't think treasure hate is unwarrented, alot of its devout fans blow up the few good games they made on genesis like they were gods gift to gaming or some shit. Dynamite Headdy, Gunstar heroes and Alien soldier are all great, entertaining games but not leaps and bounds above the competition really. Not so much so atleast that 10 + years after their release they should still be validly considered when thinking of the company.

I really like Jeremy's writing and generally trust his taste in games (except for his inexplicable SSBM and Treasure hatred).

Fixed.

I loved the original and I can't wait for this one. :D

Care to explain how this comment relates to GSH? Or is it just a random aside?

Yeah, especially since GSH is a GBA game.

never played Mischief Makers, Sin and Punishment, Bangaioh, Gradius V, Radiant Silvergun, or Ikaruga then im guessing?

Its funny Daigoro mentioned the games he did, I've played mischeif makers. Its a fun game forgot it was treasure though, silpheed kind of sucked and I never played any of those others.

Gunstar is pretty much the best run'n gun ever made, I'd say. Yup. Even if you're a Contra or, feh, Slug partisan, you have to admit it's at least in contention.

Those other two Genny games, eh, whatev. But Gunstar ... it's special.

I've been playing this game all weekend and ... I agree with Jeremy.

Totally and absolutely disappointed. Gunstar was -the- game that turned me onto Treasure... and I had recently just re-finished the original while on tour with my band in the van.

Awesome graphics but nothing I haven't already seen from AGH. I have a ton of complaints but my biggest one: They scrapped the weapon mixing.

WTF?

So are some people like you playing the finished game already? Since it's only coming out in October, you think they would have time to fix some of the flaws?

Otherwise, I'm really disappointed by hearing this. Is there any major slowdown happening too?

This definitely isn't final code. At least I hope it isn't.

No slowdown though, so technically, the game is a marvelous tech demo.

I'm sure the weapon mixing is gone for sure. Glad to hear that there's no slowdown though. I'll still be picking it up though.

Um... DS tech demos have dragged down the tech demo market in general? Or... uh... what?
I'm just saying I'm sick of tech demos masquerading as games, regardless of the platform. You may draw your own inferences.
