Hair styling Gaf, I need your help! What Hair product to buy?

Gaf, I'm struggling to find the right hair styling product for my hair. Up until now, I've been using the classic gel. But, I've come to realization I'm getting too old for it. The spiky, crunchy, shiny look makes me feel and look like I'm in the 90's. It doesn't help that I have somewhat fine/ thin hair. Been searching for something that gives me a natural look ( a matte finish) but also good hold and easy to apply /style. I keep my hair kind of short. I've tried pomade and it sucked. Way too greasy and hard to apply. Tried American crew fiber and it was horrible! Made my hair look super thin, greasy, no hold and it was a pain to put on. It left a bunch of chunks in my hair. Tried countless other products and no success.

The closest I got was Axe forge putty. It almost worked perfectly for me, except it had one huge flaw: when it dried, it left a ton of small wax chunks that made me look like I had horrible dandruff. The hair style I'm trying to get is similar to Pete Loeffler from Chevelle.

tldr: Need a matte, strong hold, hair product.

Help me out Gaf. Get me out of the 90's and into the modern era. What do you recommend?

Check out Hanz De Fuko products. I had some wax from them that was a strong hold and matte look without seeming like I had a ton of product in. Can't remember the exact name of what I had, but if you check their site they have descriptions for everything to help you decide what's best for you.

Edit: I think it was the Claymation wax.

I've heard of this stuff. Watched a quick vid on it. Will definitely add this to the list. Thanks.

OP how do you style your hair? I know you said you keep it short.

I'd recommend fatboy putty or suavecito matte pomade. They are both matte finishes and don't leave your hair feeling like you have a bunch of gunk in it.

I basically do it like that guy in the pic I posted. I tried this version of Suavecito and I wasn't a fan. Too shiny and thick. Haven't tried the matte version.

It sounds like you're applying most of it wrong. You have to rub it in your palms to warm it up and make it spread evenly.

There is a term for it but I can't remember it.

I use a fibre paste from L'Oreal. The Number 4 strength. Way better than gel and it is restylable mid day with just a little water. Will last pretty much the whole day.

Especially since all of their products are water-soluble, so they wash out easily.

Quicksand and Claymation are both good bets, though you might be able to score a sampler if you look around for a promo code. It seems like they're constantly giving them out.

Yeah, the matte pomade is lighter and no shine. If that is how you style it then i'd go with the fatboy putty or one of the hanz de fuko products. Probably the claymation one from them. You get a little more product for the around the same price if you choose the fatboy putty if price is an issue.

I usually import and use Baxter's products, so I recommend the clay or cream pomade. I also tried American eagle and while I did like it, it does leave that shine which I don't really want at times.

I almost wonder if you're using the product wrong, or using too much. I use American Crew Fiber currently and it works beautifully (just a little bit if all I want is to keep my hair from looking fuzzy, closer to a pea sized lump if I want a real style).

You gotta warm it up and spread it out on your hands and fingertips before you kinda fingercomb through your hair.

But if you want a really dramatic style like in that photo, I believe you also need to get familiar with your hair drier, product alone will rarely give you a strong lift if your hair is just laying down and drying.

Go on Amazon. Check out the gatsby hair products from Japan. Choose something like the grey/brown/purple option. You can thank me later!

It doesn't matter who we are, what matters is our plan.
Are you guys in the US able to get Fudge? It's the GOAT hair styling product, and smells awesome:

Former stylist here, fiancé is a stylist too.

Suavecito Matte pomade is a great choice. It has good hold and not greasy. Have your stylist recommend something and shoe you how to use it.

All good stuff folks. Thanks for the replies. I'm gonna try out Gatsby grey and the Hanz claymation. The Gatsby looks like a hidden gem! Pretty cheap too.

Sitting at a Starbucks a couple of blocks away from a salon that carries it so I'm gonna swoop by on my walk home to get some (Amazon is backordered until 6/4). Better be good.

Prepare for good hair. It lasts me close to 4-6 months (short messy hair) so I don't find it too pricey. Let me know how you like. Whenever I use anything else I always go back to it. nothint compares (source: im old).

Just got back from Tokyo. Needed hair product while there and bought some gatsby at a family mart. Legit for sure.

If you have thin hair or even normal hair without close spacing then how you prepare your hair for the finishing touches can be just as important. You can use a thickening shampoo or conditioner. Adding a small amount of gel to damp hair before using the hairdryer helps, the same with mousse. The last 2 kind of negate the need for specific shampoos and conditioners. Preparing your hair in this way helps a lot with the final styling, especially when it comes to volume.

I'm ready! Will give it a shot tomorrow and report back. My Aveda stuff is almost done anyways, lasted a good few months as well.

Personally I'd recommend using a bit of everything! So if yours is short you should be able to get by easy. Some clay and a bit of mousse should do the trick. Apply a small amount of clay to damp hair and then the mousse too. Work it in and then blow dry and comb/brush it into a semblance of what you want to do with it. Then a little more clay just to do some finishing touches. Heat is the key to getting it to hold. Same thing with longer hair but finish with a little misting with hair spray to get the day long hold.

You get a dry look that lasts all day. You can swap the clay to whatever your preference is but I'd really recommend blow drying for the hold. You only need a little too or it will come out clumpy and shit. A fingernails worth should do.

Tried a load of different hair products but I always come back to the first one I tried -
Matt, decent hold, easy to style at all hair lengths.

Gatsby grunge mat is also decent, has a stronger hold, though it's difficult to use it to style longer hair

Make sure you're applying these waxes/clays properly though, too many people just stick it in their hair without rubbing it in their palms and heating them up.

Just ordered the grey and green air rise. So many to choose from. Didn't know what to start with without throwing away a bunch of money so I went with the safest bets.

I'm tempted, but I used the crew fiber and hated it. How different is this one?

I use grooming cream myself, but this is the description for defining paste and fiber:

"Medium hold with low shine.
For added texture or increased definition. Beeswax provides a natural, pliable hold for various lengths. Wax-like consistency provides a matte finish while still remaining easy to distribute through hair. Defining Paste is similar to Fiber in texture and effects but is easier to use and distribute through hair. It can also be used in hair that's beyond 2'' in length."

"High hold with low shine.
Fiber-like, resinous product helps thicken, texturize and increase fullness to hair. Provides a strong, pliable hold with a matte finish. Works well in shorter hair, 1-3 inches in length."

I've used Garnier, Loreal, Gatsby, Crew, etc. Would never go back to any of them.
