Half-Life 2 for XBOX in August

"Doug on Upcoming Half-Life 2 Releases 36 Comments
4/20/2005 4:12 PST | Half-Life 2 | by Pratt
I was talking to Doug Lombardi yesterday on this year's upcoming releases, E3, etc. Here's what he had to say:

Half-Life 2: Aftermath is due in late summer. The episode continues the adventures of Gordon Freeman, and begins immediately following the conclusion of HL2. It will be available via Steam and may appear in retail boxes as well. It is not slated to appear at E3.

Lost Coast is slated to appear in the Games for Windows areas at E3, and is scheduled for release during the summer months.

Half-Life 2 Xbox, featured on this month's issue of the Official Xbox Magazine, is slated for completion in August and will be shown in Microsoft's booth at E3.

Thanks, Doug, for clarifying things for us. As always, keep it tuned to Planet Half-Life for all the latest updates."

Hell yes. I was hoping they would suck it up and release it on the Xbox. AS long as its a good port like Doom3 was then I'm good with this.

This, while kind of expected, still surprises me.

I really thought Xenon/360 would end up launching with HL2+CS:S ready for live. Perhaps they'll do that with this Aftermath expansion? That's just idle speculation.

I think they want to play it safe and not leave out the FPS userbase thats already on the current Xbox. I was sort of thinking that the game would also make an appearance on the 360 as wellthough, maybe it still might? Could be that a ton of companys are keeping quiet for the big bang that is E3.

Damn.

Xbox's release schedule is much, much stronger than many were giving it credit for in 2005.

Xbox is crackin' out the hits in '05 like it ain't no thang. So many people were writing the Xbox off in '05 because 360 is coming out at the end of the year, but that was premature.

Doom III, Chaos Theory, Stranger, Psychonaughts, Jade Empire, Midnight Club III, Unreal Championship II, Forza Motorsport, Brothers in Arms, Phantom Dust, etc. and you got Half-life 2, Conker, Darkwatch, Pirates, Episode III, Destroy All Humans, Pariah, and all the sports games coming too. Not shabby at all.

I hope they finally put CS:S on this release or they will lose a lot of potential sales even if I love the FPS genre the appeal will not be the same knowing that the PC users has CS:S, it makes no sense:
-The source engine is already ported to the xbox
-They have the netcode of the previous CS xbox version.

Thanks for listing virtually the entire xbox lineup this year

Can't say I agree with that list as all being great games.

Not if you have a PC.

Stranger, Phantom Dust, Jade Empire, and Forza are the only things released this year that I'm interested in, that I can't get a better version of on the PC, or can't get on another platform.

That said, if there is no PC release, I almost always go for the Xbox version, but it just irks me that people use games that you can get elsewhere, and often in better form, to defend the Xbox.

All I'm saying is that the Xbox is anything but barren in '05. And it doesn't matter to me if a game I'm having fun with on the Xbox is available on other platforms. What does that matter?? The point is that it's available on Xbox to play.

it's more like the Xbox is hated here, or at least by a few douchebags that seem to congregate in every Xbox thread.

There are a lot of PS2 fanatics here IMO, and some of them are Xbox haters.

PC gaming just isn't as big as console gaming as well.

It's just that PC gamers like me become upset when companies spend time porting and developing titles for the Xbox that could be better spent on making sure PC games are still going to be around.

Want proof? DX:IW. I rest my case.

I don't deny that, PC indeed doesn't get a shake around here (I dislike it myself) but I see the same idiots in every thread sharing their concerns with those of us who don't have such a religious preference. Don't buy it. Get bent. Any of us who are conceivably interested in Xbox games (or PS2 games, or GC games) know who you are and think your opining is worth shit. Less than, actually.

Hell, maybe it will run on Xbox without all the shittiness that plagues the PC version!

Hey, I could defend the Xbox just as easily. :p Every system this gen is very much worth owning, I just like to defend the ones that don't get the credit they deserve (PC, GC), and argue the other side of whatever the 'cool' opinion of the moment is. Try it, it's certainly more fun, at least. Though it's more likely to get you banned. ;) (I know I'm just asking for it now.)

And without trying to sound like too much of an asshole (though I admit, I am pretty skilled in that arena), I bet I've played/owned more Xbox games than just about all of the people in this thread who are defending the Xbox. And I'm not saying that just to brag that "Oh, I'm the biggest nerd! Yay!," but just to say that for whatever I post on Internet message boards, I am always fair and open minded when it comes to the games, and I actually like the Xbox quite a bit.

(None of the above applies to the DS, mind you. The DS still feeds on rather large portions of the cock.)

=D

I'm guessing either you don't have an Xbox, or that third one is pretty stupid.

that's true, but if sales are in the tank pc-wise, I cant blame developers for focusing more on consoles.

What, now?

If you had an Xbox, you wouldn't care that a game is on another console. Because 99.9% of the time, the Xbox version is better. Many people say that Grand Theft Auto: Vice City looks better on the PC. Does that mean fans of that game should skip the PS2 version? It's all about the platform you prefer, and the Xbox provides a great option with plenty of games.

You're getting 2 concepts mixed up here. There's defending something that's being attacked, and giving credit to a platform that you feel isn't getting enough. Each of those can exist fine on their own, but defending something that isn't getting enough credit doesn't really make sense. Nobody is attacking the PC version (other than some tired comments on loading) and nobody is attacking the PC platform as a whole in any way whatsoever, so what is there to defend?

I mean the PC version on here was very highly anticipated an the official thread when it launched was active and full of positive responses. And going onto the PC platform in general, one of the most popular games on the boards is WoW which is exclusively on the PC. So all this overactive "defense" is annoying and ridiculous.

Your first two sentences contradict the rest of your post. If it doesn't matter which version is better, why would the first thing you point out be that the Xbox version is better "99.9%" of the time? And your first sentence is wrong, anyway, which is precisly what I'm talking about --the PC gets no respect. If it did, so many people who say what you just said would realize that the PC actually gets the best version of most games that come to all platforms, regardless of whether you have a PC or can't afford one or don't want one, or whatever the case. And if you read my post, you would see that I wholeheartedly agree with you, that the Xbox does provide a great option with plenty of games, as I said each system this generation is well worth owning. But what's the point of talking about things, then, if they're all "great options with plenty of games"? :p

Oh, and Vice City for the PC does look infinitely better than either console version, yes. :)

The PC platform is blameless. A perfect mix of the best technology and ambitious game design.

As a console though, the Xbox provides plenty of games from a variety of genres, both on the PC and originally developed. Heck, many developers share the love. Like KOTOR on the PC, for example. Would the PS2 be a lesser system if God of War and Devil May Cry were ported to the PC?

Okay. Perhaps defend is the wrong word. How about "support?"

There are far less annoying and disruptive ways to give your support. Like... for instance starting a new thread highlighting some of the best HL2 mods that have come out since the game's release. That way you're giving your support to the version you prefer and at the same time giving people useful information. It's win-win.

In terms of what the PS2 offers that you can not get on other systems, yes. Obviously.

These are simple concepts, here. I mean, of course, I'm not saying that a game does not count as a good game if it is multiplatform --hell, much of my library is multiplatform games-- but if you are going to compare systems, I don't understand the logic of people who would use games that are available for multiple systems to argue their point. If you were going to buy a system, and both systems had a game you wanted very badly, one being exclusive to it's respective system, and the other being a game that is available for both, which console would you buy? For that matter, if you only owned one, or two, or even three systems, would you buy another system for a game that is available on one that you currently own? And if so, I really don't know what else to say. :p

what i didnt get is his initial comment. i still dont get it. xbox lineup isnt strong if you have a PC, huh? what?????
so what if some of the games are coming out on the PC as well, how is exclusivity even an issue here? the PC versions dont invalidate the xbox versions, they co-exist.
this is how i viewed the arguement, bare with me as i try to follow:

comment: xbox lineup is pretty strong due to these games: list of games.

his comment: not if you have a pc.

whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat?

:lol

The Xbox needs MORE PC ports. I hope this trend continues in the future. This news makes me happy, because otherwise I wouldn't be able to play HL2.

Now that's how you do discussion.

Didn't none of the devs and the pubs get the memo that the X-Box is going to fade into the sunset at the end of this year?
