Half-Life 2 Xbox movies

I will smack the first person who comments about framerate

Actually looks really solid in my opinion. Kind of amazed at the things the black beast is pulling off nowadays.

And it looks like 16:9 support too. YAY!

Does look good. He said they're incorporating some of the HDR lighting into the Xbox ver as well.

And at the risk of being smacked I have to say the framerate is pretty lousy. Even worse the dev basically admits they can't get a solid 30fps. :/

I'd rather have a scorching XBox 360 version than an okay XBox version. :\

Well, if the devs are saying they are having problems then thats one thing
But you simply can't observe how good a framerate is from an internet video

Couple other nitpicks:

1) voice syncing seems way off with the characters when they are talking. could be the preview build though

2) frame rate is very jumpy at times

I notice in the videos I've watched IGN has filmed between the loading screens! :D

They are probably working on that but won't mention it as not to hurt the sales of the xbox version.

It seems better than I thought (yes, the frame rate needs some optimization) but even with the crappyvideo you can see some very detailed textures (4th video)
I finally will be able to play this :D

Umm, not to be a dick but why wouldn't you be able to? Surely we have all commented on how good or awful framerate was from a ripped gameplay movie. If the movie is inherently choppy via streaming then that is a different story but a cached video usually gives a pretty good idea of framerate.

I for one am glad HL2 is making it to the Xbox. I kind of feel that HL2 has gone unnoticed by much of the larger gaming populace that don't play games on PCs, maybe now it'll get the recognition it deserves.

And yes, the framerate in those videos are horseshit. It doesn't take a genius to see that the game suddenly goes from smooth to super choppy during times with lots of action, so don't try to say "you can't judge framerate from videos." I can, and I will. But Doom3 didn't look so hot initially either. Hopefully they can fix it.

And I'm sure Valve would rather sell a few hundred-thousand Xbox copies, rather than a few thousand Xbox 360 copies.

hmm just noticed this in the HL2 article...

Valve suggested there might be downloadable content later on down the line, but wouldn't specify exactly what that would be.

Counter-Strike Source, HL2 Deathmatch anyone?

The box confunds the haterz again.

As for framerate, well so did Doom 3 - and that turned out lovely.

As for 360 version....well dur...obviously Valve will probably pump out a bells & whistles version with the add-in pack no doubt for a quick buck.

I know you can't please all of the people all of the time, but on GA you really can't please anyone, any of the time.

Animation cut, sound samples cut (where are dog's sounds) very low res textures compared to PC version, sub-par framerate... meh

Thanks god I was able to experience it in full detail on my PC.

I'm holding out hope on the framerate. Doom 3 XBOX also appeared rather choppy prior to release, but the final game holds a near rock solid 30 fps virtually the entire game.

The PC version hardly offered a seamless experience, though...

It looked great until dog came on screen. That room has got to be one of the less graphically intensive though, so not sure how Xbox is gonna handle the bigger stuff.

'battery puzzle' checkpoint with combine troops and gunships will take the box to his knees.

I'm wondering about that too...

On my old PC (2.4 GHz P4), there were some scenes in HL2 that absolutely killed by performance. The strider fight, for instance, ran like shit on that CPU. We're talking sub-10 fps at times. I do believe that the XBOX version will, at the very least, be entirely free of stuttering found in the PC version...

My 3.6 + 6800 handles the game nearly perfectly (from a framerate perspective), but the constant loading still damages the experience quite a bit. I would probably still be playing the game if they had managed to stream the levels. People complained about the texture pop-in found in Halo 2, but I'd take that any day over constant pausing and loading. Halo 2 was a completely seamless experience from start to finish (even between levels) and that made quite a difference...

well, i would imagine that lots of 'console balancing' will be introduced. like the same number of adversaries but only a small number appearing at a time. 2 striders no ground troops. smaller number of AI allies...

there are indeed ways around it all. but i guess they will have to rethink some of the combat pacing.

Half-life 2 with upgraded visuals, the expansion pack, and CS: Source released on 360 would be awesome. They could call it Half-life 2: Ultimate

Ugh, that framerate IS awful. They have a long way to go...

I like how they are handling the loading. HOPEFULLY, if they do it right, they will actually remove all of the loading points.

:lol

Sorry, it's completely empty.

Also, I never said that the framerate wouldn't improve. I just think its silly for people to post things as fact when it's just a freakin guess.

I could make the sae argument about the PC version of Doom3. There werepaorts that hiccup ans stuttered, but the XBox version runs smoother than my PC and has shorter loading times. I guess we won't know until Half-Life 2 ships, but I'll make the same disclaimers I always make. For this high end PC game to be on a console that's half the price of the current top line video card, I think I'll cut the port a little slack. Looks damn good for what's it's accomplishing on XBox hardware.

Here are hands-on impressions.

They say the framerate isn't all that bad after all.

Nice! They are already using some HDR lighting in that shot.

Valve plans on delivering the exact same load sections in the Xbox version as the PC version, so the story isn't broken up awkward or roughly.

It already WAS broken up and awkward on the PC. I would love it if their streaming work could remove those damn load points...

Pretty interesting video. Definately worth the watch, even though you could tell in parts that he was trying not to go over consumer's heads.

Lol, I actually find that there are more movies besides the first page, from the movies it seems that HL2 is very scripted. isn't it?

Only if you're comparing a 128MB video card-equipped PC running the title at the same resolution and quadruple the RAM and running at about 500Mhz faster than the XBOX. It looks really good considering the specs of the XBOX...and even then, it still looks pretty good.

looks pretty awesome to me... but maybe thats cause i've never gotten to see the pc one in person

Wow, then you really don't know what you were missing.

Graphically there's really no comparison between that terrible Xbox shot and these PC ones, but try to find me a $150 PC (without monitor) that can even run it.
