So why is it that when I try to play split screen Halo it gives me an error message reading "Failed to load map" or something along those lines?

Yeah this has been happening to a few people. I had a similar problem, where about 3 levels into the campaign it simply refused to load the next level, so I had to exchange it. Now I'm paranoid it's going to happen further in.
Same exact thing happened with Steel Battalion Line of Contact. It's one of the games that dies under a sensitive thomson drive. Sucks when you're about to launch a game.. and somebody fails to load.
