UK Software Charts

* Rockstar/Take 2's 'Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas' (PS2) regains No1 in the Entertainment Software Top 40 with strong competition from EA's 'Need for Speed: Underground 2' (PS2/XB/PC/GC/GBA), a new entry at No2. 'Need for Speed: Underground 2' on PS2 improves on the original's launch week - achieving the 8th highest PS2 launch week in the UK, making it a strong contender for the All Formats Xmas No1. The highly anticipated 'Half-Life 2' (PC) from Vivendi debuts at No3 meaning 'Halo 2' drops 3 places from No1 to No4. 'Half-Life 2' becomes the 3rd fastest-selling PC title ever in the UK, behind 'Championship Manager 4' and 'The Sims 2'. Unusually this week, the Entertainment Software Top 10 is dominated by 7 single format exclusives - 4 PS2-only, 2 PC-only and 1 Xbox-only. The only other new releases to make it into the Entertainment Software Top 40 are EA's 'Medal of Honor: Pacific Assault' (PC) at No25, Midway's 'Mortal Kombat: Deception' (PS2/XB) at No28 and Sony's 'Singstar Party' (PS2) at No40.

Halo 2 will fall off the chart quickly - just like any other Xbox-exclusive.
And i'm amazed that Sonic Heroes is still on the charts almost a year after release.

Where is Metroid Prime 2? Has it launched over there?

next week. It actually might not make top 40. MP1 didnt do well here either however...

Halo 2 should last a while in the charts. The biggest GC and Xbox games always do just not at the highest positions.

I'm sure all big 3 titles (Halo 2, Half-Life 2 and GTA SA) will pick up over Christmas, and then beyond because all the joe averages who get it for Christmas will show their average joe friends it who'll go out any buy it.
Plus each of them is a AAA title for a different system, and has something unique.

I should'nt worry about Halo 2, no.4 isn't exactly 'plummetting', I was expecting no.40 after that headline... not even counting Xbox Live, the splitscreen multiplayer for Halo 2 will give it legs, as GoldenEye and even Perfect Dark's did.

24.03.2003

01 [ - ] Metroid Prime
02 [02] The Sims
03 [10] Rayman 3
04 [04] The Getaway
05 [05] Grand Theft Auto: Vice City

At a very rough guess, I'd put GTA:SA at something like 130k, NFS on close to that, maybe 100k for Half Life 2, and prob 70-80k for Halo 2??

:lol

A guess, what is this?

Prediction = Reality???

I think it's something like this: GTA:SA = 1,000,000,000,000 , NFSU2 = 50k, HL2 = 49k, Halo 2 = 10k

Can we get some real numbers?

Shocking. I saw the Metroid advert on the TV earlier. I doubt it'll make a dent still.

Its the US advert. Crap basically. Next week there isnt any huge release. Killzone isnt looking so good now that the word has spread i guess.

EA must be happy but GE:RA is going to do worse than Killzone maybe? :p

This list doesn't say much about Halo 2 at all. But it does say a lot of how strong the GTA and NFS brands are. Even the allmighty Half Life 2 can't outsell them the week it's released. :lol

Well, how strong are PC titles in the UK?

Hey, the Darkness ROCK! I believe in a thing called love.....

and by the way, Half-Life 2 is the third fastest selling PC game behind the Sims 2(understandable) and Championship Manager 4... umm.. hmm.. now that's interesting.. is that one of those sports games that is pretty much all stats and stats-related stuff? Or is it a soccer game I've never heard of?

CM4 is less of a game and more of a spreadsheet program but it is undeniably the most accurate simulation of football (or of any sport in general) ever done. The detail in the game is just immense.

Ah, that's what I thought it was. Something of that sort.. not that there's anything wrong with that.. I'd probably be bored to tears, but everyone's got different tastes, eh? Even if they're tastes are dumb and wrong..

Just kidding.. :D

No, because they don't supply any.

It's called making an EDUCATED guess based on the information that's been suppied.

Championship Manager 4 did about 126k in it's first week (http://www.gamespot.com/pc/sports/championshipmanager4/news_6024265.html) and is the fastest selling PC game ever. At the time, it took over the title from Champ Man 01-02, which was around 60k.
Sims 2 did about 55k in it's 2nd week, so I think 100k+ in it's first week is reasonable.

This would put Half Life 2 somwhere between 60 and 100k, so I might bring my original guess down a bit to 90k.
Halo 2 did 260k last week, very top-heavy so I think on 2nd thoughs 60-70k is a reasonable guess for it's 2nd week.

NFSU2 is the 8th biggest PS2 first week ever, which must come out at around 80-100k as well really. (You have a few FIFAs, MGS2 on 130k GT3 on 92k, GTA:VC on 275k etc). Add in the other versions and 120-130k seems reasonable.

And I'd be suprised if GTA:SA was still doing more than about 130-140k a week, cause that would just be obscene.

OK?

Edit: actually, looking back over old threads it seems Bunkum has been managing to get his hands on numbers....

At a guess, I would say they do pretty reasonable. For instance, in the past few years I have never been in a shop where the Gamecube section is bigger that the PC games section but then again Nintendo apathy is very big at the moment in the UK (and deservedly so imo).

Mind you I would say its nowhere as popular as PS2, judging by the crap shoved on the shelves but I guess it would be a surprise if it was the other way round

Your going about it the right way, but have made one big error in your guesstimates. NFSU2 is released multiplatform, so you need to add estimates for xbox, gcn etc which would put GTA:SA sales > 150k

Well, it did 575k in it's first week, yeah?

Week 3 was when Halo2 was released, and it dropped below 260k.

I'd have guessed something like

W1 575k
W2 250k
W3 180k
W4 130k

and I still think that is obscenely high.

Don't forget that only about 3-4 games have EVER done more than 150k in a week (all in their first week really). It's gotta drop back to a reasonable number at some point !

That was what the last bit meant. The XB version won't be more than about 25k (Fable set the first week Xbox record at 30k the other week), PC, GC and GBA versions maybe 15-20k between them? I'd be suprised if more than 140k max really...

That doesnt explain why GBA has far less retail shelf space than XBox however. You'd think the difference was like 3% to 15%.

They deserve it. Trust me. It makes me wonder how Nintendo still sells relatively good in Europe.

They have improved a LOT though. I don't see where all the complaining comes from when they seem to do a very good job now. Sure they made some mistakes (mainly at the start of this gen), but this year has been great game-wise in my opinion. Except for Mario Tennis and Four Swords Adventure I think they brought every big GC game over that the US got. Plus, they have even released The Minish Cap for GBA already before US got it (may be the reason for not releasing FSA yet).

Q1 2005 seems to become very good as well with some games coming surprisingly quick imo (DK Jungle Beat before US for example).

With GC games still being cheaper than most Xbox / PS2 games here, I don't see what you could be complaining about except for advertising maybe. But without a huge game like PS2 / Xbox have this year (MP2: Echoes doesn't have the potential to sell nearly as well as Halo 2 / GTA: SA, even with a huge ad campaign I think), they don't stand a chance anyway.

You're forgetting Mario Party 6.

I agree to an extent as overall in this area they have certainly improved but why delay those 3 games?

Sure but they havent advertised much at all this year unlike other years which werent good anyway. What they did is rubbish so far. All i have seen is Donkey Konga, Pokemon and Metroid Prime 2 this WHOLE year. 1 WHOLE year. All pitiful adverts as well. MP2 is a US hand me down. Donkey Konga's ad was more suited to Wario Ware. Pokemon i dont care. Anyway they wasted their releases this year. No hype. No GC or GBA scene. Nothing.

Even GBA is fast becoming nothing here. It already doesnt have much shelf space anywhere and is shrinking fast. Good job Nintendo. Well done! They need to do more research methinks about what effect their actions are having.

I like the GC and all because of the game experiences it provides but Nintendo seem to make it bad to own a GC and they are making the situation worser. People like me will know what to buy, what to do, where to buy from and such but think about the majority of GC owners. The problem has gone beyond attracting new users now i am afraid. The same could happen to GBA here.
