Halo 3 Beta Video

The denial of most of the 360 fans is really astounding. I mean I know I can't get any serious response from guys like GhaleonEB or op_ivy but 99% of 360 owners?

Pretty sad.

I remember how Halo 1 was looking like nothing on the PC at the time, it was looking amazing (no PC game had bumpmapping at the moment).

Halo 3 does not.

i thought i was pretty reasonable... *scratches head

Seriously why do Halo and Forza threads always turn to absolute shit?

Because they're both first-party exclusives in this crazy muthalovin' console war?

Dude, there's a lot of Xbox 360 owners in this thread saying that it doesn't look very good. I'm one of them. I'm hoping for the best, but I expect more from a next-gen Halo even if this is MP. It's in Beta so I'm going to cut them some slack.

But after seeing stuff like Gears on X360, there's no excuse. Bungie will have had 3 years to work on this, they better deliever in every respect.
Halo is an open FPS. I wouldn't expect it to match the graphics like Gears of War.

Halo threads bring everyone out of the woodwork. When Borys crawls into a Microsoft thread to lob spitballs, you know it's gotten bad. There's a good contingent of Halo fans here who actually discuss things; that just constitutes ~10% of the thread. The signal:noise ratio is dropping as the release of Halo 3 gets closer.

Batten down the hatches. It's just getting bumpier from here.

Edit: that's a long cat.

please remove that. jesus. its bad enough to have to load tons of unfunny gifs on every page

I don't expect the MP or SP to look as good as Gears. Gears takes place in relatively small areas and the MP is limited to 8 players. But still, I expect more of H3.

God danmit che stop being so smart and practical... I wanted that question to remain mysterious and unexplainable!

Its so much more fun when not everything is so cut and dry.

But I think between Halo 3 Beta Images, this...
Random Gears Gameplay 1
Random Gears Gameplay 2
Random Gears Gameplay 3

and this...
Random MGS4 Gameplay
Random MGS4 Gameplay
(...and possibly add a dose of Forza 2...)

There's a reason why 'judging' a games graphics is best left until after the game ships.
And no, the Halo Beta does not qualify as a shipped game. :)

(Note: I see you bolded the "average" and "mediocre" from my first couple sentences. Admittedly that's mostly tongue in cheek, as should be more obvious after reading the rest of the post)

Not upset in the least when someone judges MGS4 gameplay trailer screens harshly. It's only natural, and the reality is that they mostly don't look very good. As a huge fan of the series, and having seen kojipro's standards for previous games, I can comfortably think that it's mostly using placeholder assets and I won't have any disappointments graphically or otherwise from the final product. But I'm not gonna call it something it's not when judging what's in front of my face: "AWESOME! OMG LOOK AT THE GRASSSSSS" ;b

But hey, it's halo, lots of us are crazy for it, whatever. Just temper your excitement with some understanding of why non-fans won't necessarily be impressed by it.

I would think it's no trouble for bungie to track down this leak, since they have a database of all the games played, just do a query to fnd a game where all the gamertags seen in the game appear, and then find the gamertag that doesn't appear in the kill msgs.

The guy is xFalzy or something. He's also a bridger, revealed by doing a google search which stumbled upon a post from a few months back.

oh, i'm sure he has already been hung by his entrails and paraded through microsoft as an example to all the other testers with eyes for fame, glory, and internet groupies.

I agree with the notion that H3 doesn't look jaw-dropping, but others are comparing it to UT 2003/4, which is insanely stupid.

There's a few things people have to consider here...

1) The artstyle is very much the same. Since this is a continuation of Halo 2, you can't just redesign the characters, overhaul the Warthog, change the look of the guns. You can add detail, and apparently they've done that. Perhaps the issue is that a lot of this detail was already in Halo 2. It's another DoA 4-esque situation of diminishing returns as far as detail goes. The more noticable upgrades would probably have to do with effects, rather than polycount. Ie. better smoke effects, HDR implementation, motion blur, etc.

2) These levels are being tweaked. They are being tested for their playability, not for their graphics. The level can be populated with grass and foilage later. At this point, they are testing out the online gameplay.

3) We've only been able to "judge" this game with scans and videos taken off of a composite cable. Doing that to even Gears can make the game look 10 times worse than how it really is.

At the same time, people claiming that it looks better than such and such game, should take a look at point 3, and also have their eyes checked.

It's 2007 -- count on it.

Seriously?

I hope this isn't another MGS2 situation where Kojima is falling behind and pumps up the team to 100+ just to get it out on time. It didn't work last time and it probably won't work again.

I dunno, I thought MGS3 was a fantastic game.

Guess you've got impossibly high standards.

Wooooooooooollan, where did Kojima question the possibility? I dunno, releasing a Metal Gear game outside of the holiday timeframe would feel very weird.

I never heard it personally but it was said in one of the MG threads that Kojima had mentioned that a 2007 release would be very hard.

I thought MGS3 was awesome as well. If you read up on the development of MGS2 Kojima talks about how far behind on dev they were with the game and that by pumping up the team to 100+, they were able to get the game out on time. But that stressed working environment took its toll on the game, as the Big Shell stuff was much worse than the Tanker part. I just don't want to see Kojima made a mad rush to finish MGS4 this year cause it might end up hurting the game. If they are on schedual to deliver a fantastic experience like MGS3 with MGS4 this year then I'm totally cool with that. But if the game needs to slip into 2008 to be at the level of MGS1/3, then so be it.

I've found that I have a suprising amount of apathy in regards to the graphics. I just want to play this damn thing so I can either A: Love it to death and spend the rest of my life on Xbox Live or B: Hate it and get into endless artard arguements with xbots like I did with Halo 2.

Hey guys, can we keep this on topic (Less MGS4). I`d say it doesn`t look too bad. I can`t believe that some people are willing to say it looks crap 6 months out from release.

Its certainly a brave move putting out a beta for this, as people are bound to be harsh.

I believe Kojima said that it would be hard to add rumble to MGS4 because of the time frame, out of all the interviews/podcasts etc I have never heard him question the possibility of a 2007 release... well maybe once back when the game was shown for the very first time.

Bungie rules and you don't see a lot of devs doing this with such high profile games (being candid with the development process). I like seeing the game progress through the different stages of development but I can understand why most devs would opt not to do this.

I predict a good amount of crow eating all around. We'll see I guess.

Halo's single-player has always felt and looked more epic, vast, and impressive than its multiplayer component.

What I look for in Halo 3 is its continued domination of enemy AI and moment-to-moment firefights which are so supremely satisfying. I fully expect to spend 3 hours trying to get out the first area on legendary difficulty again. :)

thanks btw. much better encoded then my own attempt.

watching it over and over, i'm really appreciating the updates to the map layout itself. like the recently released tombstone, it seems they have greatly improved the mobility of the map. all sorts of new routes through, over and around things.

So you never played Halo online and yet in other threads you make comparisons to it as far as online play is concerned.

Just saw the video and I'm not impressed overall, but then again Halo 1 and 2 never impressed me from a graphical standpoint either.

The Bubble shield is the highlight of the game's graphics in that video without a doubt, it looks so cool! I also like how all the text has a very bouncy quality to it, gives the game a much better sense of life.

The Warthog and Mongoose look nice but MC and the rest of the environment looks a bit meh and the lighting is ok at best.

Runs nice and smooth though and it looks to be a blast online so I'm happy :D

I just watched again, anyone notice nothing moves when you shoot it, and sadly no glass in that level.Hopefully they put more stuff in to blow up and shoot to show some physics.
