Halo 4 OST Samples and Details Released

So you folks want the poor guy to go in there and not do his own work, his own way?

You'd like him to just block his creativity and try to copy Marty's work?

Everything in Halo 4 is being made from scratch. Whole new team with new ideas. Let them do their own thing.

It doesn't need to sound like Halo to be good or enjoyable.

The game is called Halo 4. It's not a new game, it's not a new team. It's the same daggum people extending the same daggum series. [Edit: apparently not as many of the "same people" as I believed.] It's a continuation. Some old faces have left, some new have joined. But it's Halo freaking 4.

That aside, I'll reserve judgment on the soundtrack.

What?
It's totally a new team. Practically a completely new team.
85%+ of the 300 staff are different.

Um wat.

It is a new game by a new team. 343 Industries is not Bungie.

I really like what I'm hearing. Halo 4 OST is definitely in good hands.

I would still like the Halo theme though, but with Davidge's touch. Man, that would be amazing.

Actually, it is a new team. Bungie did the last ones, 343i is doing this one.

Where have you been for the past few years?

To be honest I was quite disappointed with Halo 3's soundtrack. I loved Halo 2's soundtrack, but 3's seemed like far too much of a retread to me, and I'm glad we're not getting that again. I enjoyed the fact that there was lots of new stuff in ODST and Reach, and I'm very much looking forward to hearing Halo 4's soundtrack in full in-game!

Glad he decided to take the cues from Marty regarding the use of piano in the music of the Halo series. I enjoy that he's really making this sound his own though. I like it.

It's an important instrument as far the the Halo OSTs have gone.

Dug this up from an old interview with Davidge;

Do you have any favorite songs from past Halo games? Are you going to be bringing in a lot of that music?

No, I mean, I've not actually been involved in re-working any of the old themes. I've purely been writing new material. That's been my brief, is to evolve the musical world of Halo. Even though obviously I reference—purely because I've been playing the games for many years—I'm referencing Marty's work. But not in any direct way. I've not been taking any of his melodic themes and updating them and changing them around and rearranging them.

I believe that there might be a few key moments in the game when they'll reprise one of Marty's themes or a couple of Marty's themes. That's going to be quite a small part of the score for the game, and quite possibly that will be just more toward the beginning of the game to help with the natural flow from Halo 3 to Halo 4.

That sounds like a reasonably good compromise.

I really like what I'm hearing. Going by what 343 have said, this is going to be a darker story than previous games and the soundtrack fits that perfectly. It still has the sense of exploration and intrigue but not as inviting if that makes sense?

Meh, I know this. Still the same people.

I swear there are less than 10 people from Bungie, but I may be wrong.

Ah, I love this track.

Hopefully this is the case, it would be a crime not to have the old themes at all.

I'm a fan of soundtracks, but $75 to have the standard tracks and the remixes?

edit: Hot DAMN at the second half of Revival. I took that specific part from someone on YouTube who extracted it from the E3'12 trailer and I listen to it sometimes when I'm about to do HIIT or any lifting. Shit gets me AMPED.

In general, I mentally lump game soundtracks into two three categories. The first has music so great, it stands on its own and I want to listen to it outside of the game. The second has great music in the context of the game, but which doesn't really make for great listening outside of it. And the last is just not very good music.

Right now, based on these samples, this sounds like the second category. Perhaps when I've played the game and have contextualized the music, it will resonate with me more, but what I'm hearing is really solid, stylish action music. I kinda wish they'd released a greater range of music; all the tracks have about the same level of urgency to them. I'm curious whether there are any quieter, more emotional tracks, or which create a different feeling audio landscape (mystery, suspense, etc.).

I really dig the sound of it, if that makes sense. There are some great sounds in the mix and the tracks feel like they are cohesively from the same body of work.

I do hope the Halo theme makes some kind of return. I associated it partly with Halo, but primarily with the Master Chief. It would just be wrong to bring the Chief back and not in any way feature the theme that we associate with him.

i only want 2 themes from the previous halos, and im sure they are the first two everyone thinks of when they think of the series. So far loving everything I've heard, especially Requiem, one of my favorite songs in many years

Also, music sounds incredible. I am ready for something new.

To Galaxy is truly epic. Love it.

EDIT

Awakening and Ascendancy are kind of predictable and boring. Typical action game/ movie music. Revival is rough, loud, bombastic overly reminiscent of Hans Zimmer's sound. To Galaxy is by far the best, the most unique and the most "Halo" of all of them. It seems like that will be the main theme and will have several iterations to accompany it as the player progresses through the campaign.

WOW! Soundtrack of the Year. This is great.

Revival > all tracks ever in the Halo trilogy. Just imo, except the Halo theme. Really loving this one.
