Halo Fan exploits glitch to unlock Halo Infinite split-screen co-op on original Xbox One!

Not only did you misread my post, but you misread your too.

I never said they had 5 years to "test" co-op I said they had (over) 5 years to implement it and they did, that's a fact, and they announced it from near the start of the project. In this sentence specifically you say they didn't have 5 years, and then said I acted like the project was finished 5 years ago? What? Are you evening reading what you're writing? No.

I had the same thought when I read your post earlier, you absolutely directly literally said 5 years to test it. I thought that was a strange way of putting it.

Look, 343's failure is genuine, and one could EASILY say 5 years is more than enough time to deliver a complete Halo game that includes split-screen that was conceived and planned correctly from the beginning.

But well, it wasn't. And it's just not accurate to say they had 5 years to test the split screen, or even implement it. Mind you, a bit part of the challenge is graphical and the game got a major facelift after the disastrous reveal. For all we know, split screen was working then and suddenly it was plagued with all sorts of technical issues from the revamp.

That probably isn't how it went down but I'm just trying to get across that co-op isn't exactly something you can just "work on" in parallel with the rest of the game to get it "ready" and then it's "done", you can make one change in the game and it could break the co-op.

Edit: let me rephrase this, i shouldnt have reacted like that. I think that one way 343 could really help their narrativr would be to come forward with a tell all blog post that details the challenges this game has faced throughout its development, why the campaign was so drastically reduced in scope to only one area. why features like network coop are proving challenging to deliver, and why it keeps getting pushed back, and why split screen coop proved to be not possible to successfully implement.

Infinite's Campaign has loads of features and design decisions that no Halo Campaign has ever had to tackle before.
And a Car racing studio is making a Fable and an FPS studio made a goty Horizon zero dawn game.

Making on top of what has already been laid out for them for 5 platforms within the same genre is not praise worthy from planets richest publisher handling one of planet's most celebrated franchise. Are only 34 people working at the studio ?

Throwing money at the problem might not be the solution as only so much talent can go around the world, and 343 probably lacks it given their track record.

Fake hypothesis - If I was in-charge I would had made the same decision. Your studio obviously lack talent and speed, so go slow and handle with care because doesn't matter how much time you take, if the end result is good your die hard fans will always return. What an amazing problem to have.

I'd like to remind the poster that Halo Infinite won numerous GOTY awards. It was definitely my GOTY hands down. So.. yea. 343i built like that, too.

I had the same thought when I read your post earlier, you absolutely directly literally said 5 years to test it. I thought that was a strange way of putting it.

Did you miss the part where he said (of course you did) that I thought the game was finished 5 years ago? Which I never said?

And the proper context is that I said they had since the implementation of co-op is CLEARLY in the game, 5 years to refine it, but from the start I said they had 5 years to include it (they did) and they had 5 years to get it working (they did) if you want to use test that's fine to (they did) there's nothing "strange" about it. Poor defense.

But well, it wasn't. And it's just not accurate to say they had 5 years to test the split screen, or even implement it.

By definition it's accurate because they did objectively have 5 years to implement split-screen, which they promised, and couldn't get it done. You can't agree they couldn't get it done, and then say it's not accurate to say they didn't have 5 years. what?

I'm just trying to get across that co-op isn't exactly something you can just "work on" in parallel with the rest of the game to get it "ready" and then it's "done"

Except there's no point here, that's exactly what happened, they were working on co-op along with the rest of the game that's why this glitch is even possible. they also promised to work on it during development from the start. How many Pirouettes are you going to do for 343i?

I actually feel terrible for all the Halo fans. They deserve better.

People are testing it now, bad sign if they can get to the end or close tot he end of the game with co-op.

Much of this wouldn't be a big deal if they were just transparent about what happened, that cancellation announcement was the perfect time to do the exact opposite of what they did.

Really now... and you know this based on what experience?

Infinite's Campaign has loads of features and design decisions that no Halo Campaign has ever had to tackle before. To pretend the challenges of focusing on split-screen co-op - that so few are ever going to touch - are the exact same for Halo Infinite as they were for past Halo games is quite a leap of faith.

No past Halo title has ever been developed for so many different platforms all at the same time before. Halo 1, 2, 3, ODST, Reach, 4 and 5 were all developed for a single console platform at the time of launch, and none launched for PC simultaneously like Infinite had to.

Infinite launched on 5 consoles at the same time + PC with a radically reinvented Halo Campaign from all prior games, on a brand new game engine. A great deal of the "new" Halo would have certainly taken programmers and designers away from something like split-screen local co-op. It only makes sense for anybody that has played Halo Infinite's campaign why things might not be as easy as they were before. It is so far and away from being the same old Halo we're all use to.
The only thing that campaign did was create a very narrow open world that lacked any kind of visual variety, we saw the same ground texture, tree model and rocks all over the place, then you could go underground in a bunch of places that were all made out of the same materials as well. Yeah they added the grappling hook which was cool but what about the rest of the world? almost no physics for anything, tanks couldn't move trees, covenant storage containers or even small rocks lol, shooting a tree with a tank cannon did nothing. It just liked like they took one big open halo map and stretched it out.

Clearly they cut a ton of stuff to even get it out a year later than it was originally supposed to launch. There was almost no real story in the campaign and the last level was basically a single player horde mode. That engine wasn't new either it was a revision of the same one they had been using they just gave it a different name. It doesn't matter how many consoles they made it on they were all xbox consoles it wasn't like they made them for playstation and switch, they all started off in basically the same place.

I'm only talking campaigns here because I don't play Halo MP but Halo 4 was a big step down from the Bungie games, Halo 5 was far worse than 4 and Infinite played the best out of all of them but had the shallowest campaign in the history of the series.

Sony developed a last gen version of every all 3 of thier biggest franchises. (Gt7, horizon, gow) So saying that this is hurting xbox while not affecting Sony doesnt really match up.
The only real difference is the pc release and series S, but when your already reaching back to xbox one, that's not really the issue.
Nah. A transition always includes last gen. Xbox has to cater to phones, s, and last gen. It's not good. And besides, even of you disagree that it's not hurting Sony or whatever you can't refute the fact that thats what Jim meant and regardless is being taken out of context.

This is old news. The code has always been there and this has been a known glitch since 2021. Lol at all these click bait "news" sites and click bait YouTubers/Twitter Warriors trying to pass this off as current. Giving bottom feeders like this oxygen just makes the problem worse, as they don't give a shit about the hobby and just want to make a quick buck.

No once forced them to do this. This is a first party game, if they decided to do a simultaneous launch it is on them. No one else does a launch like this for good reason. If they decided to make their game launch more difficult on purpose, and then that leads to them cutting game features, that is their choice to do so and gamers are rightly going to have the right to complain.

Console games are suppose to be able to run on worse hardware than on PC because they target a single archetechture. Microsoft decided to not do that any more, and if they can't work out a way to deal with the new changes then maybe they should go back to making console games.

I wonder how different (if at all) Infinite would have been if they decided to just release it on the Series S and X and not Xbox One.

Sure. But you got what I meant right. Regarding how other dev tackled things way out of their comfort zone and excelled compared to 343 fumbling for the third time.

This raises many questions about what the heck is going on at 343i, and the decision to cancel local co-op which apparently is already partially in the game. If you can get Halo infinite with this split-screen glitch to run with only minor frame rate drops in select places, and on the original Xbox One, not the slightly improved One S or the vastly improved One X, than why the heck did they cancel the co-op? Xbox One S and especially One X, it would be high res at at 60fps, just test the co-op through the game to make sure any small issues are addressed and that's it, you have unlocked the co-op achievement for Halo Infinite.

What kind of incompetence are we dealing with here that a fan can exploit a split screen glitch on the original Xbox One Sku right after 343i says it's not possible to do at the moment, and isn't their focus making the announcement they are cancelling the feature?

343i continues to look worse and worse, maybe they are hiring the wrong people, they need to hire employees that can produce results and are actually qualified for the job.

As as Former Halo fan this is unacceptably unreal.

Time to get the guillotine at 343 cause this is embarrassing.

And, tbh, even that video was old news at the time, as this was discovered the first week it was released.

Open world splitsscren can be a real problem based on streaming assets and available video memory. So if the players part to far from each other there might not be enough ram to get all different assets inside and the xbox one consoles might run into issues streaming assets when traveling away from each other since you have to divide the bandwidth by 2 and those hdds are really slow. So I can see why it might work on first glance but it is not feasible for every situation in the game. I don't want to defend them. I didn't buy the game since the disc version can't be played without an update. But I think this is the reason.

...it has some FPS issues, but nothing significant given it's not even really an official/finished version of split-screen co-op.
The "nothing significant" is doing some _really_ heavy lifting there. Hand waves off what could've either been a mountain of optimisation work and changes or been effectively impossible without changes to the campaign itself.

The fact that you say ms has to cater to "phones" means you don't even understand how the cloud gaming system works and how they are adapting virtual controls after the fact via an entirely seperate team. S is super easy as it shares many next gen traits and scaling to it is very easy.

Don't feel bad for us, almost none of us cared about the feature anyhow. The vast majority of the people whining about it being gone had no intention of using it. It's just one more reason to jump on the complain about 343 bandwagon. Hell I bet half the complainers don't even own the game or have gamepass.

Several big gaming and tech sites are also reporting on the news, because this is a new individual that found the glitch through a slightly different method, and no one really reported on the video you showed. So for many people it's the first time they heard of it, it's recent, and right after 343i's cancellation announcement.

Making old news new news. It's all part of the modern click bait news cycle. Halo was in the news again and there was controversy around the canceled campaign co-op. Tons of sites ran with this story. It happens all the time in the news, no matter what the subject.

There are numerous videos of people doing the split screen campaign co-op trick from 2021. We even talked about it in the Halo Community thread here at GAF back in 2021.
Post in thread 'A Halogaf Community Thread: The Old Becomes New' https://www.neogaf.com/threads/a-halogaf-community-thread-the-old-becomes-new.1469782/post-265243094

Had no idea this game ran on previous gen Xbox.

It was a big complaint on gaming boards for awhile, there was a time when people though due to reports on issues they were going to drop Xbox One, but they ended up confirming it later.

But i guess it was inevitable, they can't only make a game for the Xbox One X by itself, it has to work with all the Xbox One consoles.

Yeah fuck me and my family of wife/kids wanting to play a latency free coop game. While we're at it fuck those kids friends that visit and play too.

Halo don't need us. We're the ones in the wrong, your post has shown me the path to the great journey.

Cross-Play was a feature they could pretend it was a civil rights issue console war? Oh then that is important.

Foundational feature of a franchise 343i themselves thought it was important enough to promise it would always be part of the franchise and part of Halo: Infinite and thus could not be used to console war against PS consoles in and of itself? Oh then that is NOT important.

Is there anything green related you will not defend mate?!?

Lol calm down. I'm not even that hardcore for halo, it's a game I enjoy, and that hadn't changed with 343. These forums are so ridiculously lopsided against them is the only reason I speak up. There's a ton more of posters just afraid to post for fear of being basically bullied by all the 343 haters, it's really rediculous.

This has zero to do with green or blue. This has to do with all of the constant and rediculous dog pile on this forum about 343. There's a out 30 posters who go on and on and on about every single thing 343 ever did wrong since the dawn of time and it doesn't matter what they do right.
There is no balance whatsoever. Anyone who defends them is instantly labeled a green warrior and is "console waring"

I get that feeling, I am sure you have seen ND game threads in the last 10 years right ;)?

The difference is the many documented cases of issues in what 343i has produced nowhere near comparable to the quality others have provided. I am honestly not seeing unfair dog piling on 343i, a lot if not most of the negative feedback they are getting is deserved and self induced.

No it's true they aren't at the level of ND, but how many companies are, 2 or 3?
But it still doesn't negate all they do well.

Nobody is saying they are doing nothing right, but they have grossly mismanaged Halo and seem to keep failing upwards or laterally at worst. Halo: Infinite is not their crown achievement, Halo: MCC requires many years to unwind the cf of a release (the emulation quality tools years to reproduce the original Xbox/Xbox 360 visual effects accurately on top of many bugs). I think a core group of people giving them a free pass and a soundproof shield is not helping them.

See that's unfair at best. It took some time but mc collection is largely functional and fun to play. And I'm aware that infinite is not perfect, but its still a fun game to play that is true to halo roots. No need for a free pass, but no need for blind rage either.

Well for me, as primarily a single player halo person, it really didn't affect me much. Every time I've played mc either single player or multiplayer I had no issues.

They want to sell you more copies of the game. Its that simple. Its fine though, because the majority of halo fans who played it during its hay day are now middle class adults that would handwave this away by saying things like 'totally understandable' / 'companies got to make money' / 'who plays split screen co-op nowadays anyway?' and 'its good business sense, they would be developing this for a minority of players and capitalism isn't interested in the minority'. Also any young people who can't afford to buy multiple copies and systems aren't really that interested in Halo anyway, plus they never knew any better because they don't know the video game industry before 2010. Halo has failed massively and persistently for the past 10 years to appear cutting edge and interesting to a fresh and broad playerbase. Its gameplay and mechanics haven't evolved that much since the mid 2000s. What we're seeing is Halo adapting to these times by going full mask off and trying to bleed a stone dry instead of doing anything new with the franchise. I actually understand this, the devs have been backed into a corner because all the hardcore Halo fans cry about any little change that happens with every new game. The industry just needs to move on from Halo.

I don't like buying games that are incomplete. Me not having the game or gamepass (lol what if i have a d decided not to play untill it has split screen?) doesn't prove any point when the point is stupid in the first place. They promised a basic feature since the beginning of Halo would still be part of it, they now say they won't deliver it. Fuck them, i'm not paying due to that. Simple as.

First you say "us", then you're not that much of a Halo fan.
Well then Mr Not So Much Of a Halo Fan - bugger off. More people cared than you think and no matter how small of a group that is, those fans are being told to sto crying cause their reasons and needs are somehow worthless.
