Halo: Reach Beta Thread

Bungie's Press Release said:
Another core team, led by our co-founder and Studio Creative Director, Jason Jones, has already begun laying the groundwork to bring our newest universe, stories, and characters to life.
Well at least this is awesome. Believe.

Exactly. What does this mean for Reach and the ongoing support? DLC for Reach, updates?
I think, this'll be a job for 343i.

I'm sad too with this news. I hope it'll be a great serie and nothing like CoD. And after 10 Years Bungie will develope the new halo. Maybe we'll see a teaser for the first 343i game at the E3 or as the Legendary Ending of Halo Reach.

Yea, it's hard not to feel numb towards Reach and the prospect of decent continued support. I mean, I wasn't especially optimistic in the first place but this is taking the piss.

I'm guessing the contract for Halo with Microsoft would state x amounts of games with x amount of DLC inckuded. I would expect at least 2 DLC's for Reach under their contract with Microsoft.

Bungie is not dumb. I'm sure they learned a lot from their relationship with MS and I sure they were paying very close attention to the IW situation. All this tells me is that they are going multi-platform which is a good thing.
Ink likely dry long before that blew up.

All I can say is thank fuck Microsoft own the Halo license.

Edit: and I never thought I'd say that, but I guess it's the lesser of two evils!

It would be impossible for me to be in a greater state of agreement with what you just said. I seriously cannot believe that the studio heads at Bungie would watch what's going on over at Infinity Ward and enter into a deal like this. Yes it's a 10 year partnership agreement, but you wouldn't don't make partnership agreements with satan do you... regardless of how much money he offers you.

I really don't get any of this step 7 world domination bs. We get it, you're minted. There isn't a single franchise that Activision has left that I have any respect for.

So I guess put me in the cautiously optimistic camp.
I just hear Activision + Bungie and my initial reaction is going to be getting riled up. There is literally no other company I loathe more in the gaming industry, and for them to have an exclusive 10 year publishing contract with my favorite company in the gaming industry is at the very least... unpleasant feeling.

As far as going multiplatform I don't think that'll benefit anyone other than those that wouldn't have been able to play it otherwise, and that's not me. From a purely selfish standpoint I would just like them to choose a single platform that offers the best overall performance and online infrastructure and stick with it, PS3 or 360 I have both so it doesn't matter. It may come with some drawbacks, one of the best things to come from Bungie's MS & 360 exclusivity was the community features surrounding their games. Things like Bnet's microsoft.net login that enables you to queue and download Halo 3 content right to your system worked perfectly. I'd hate for them to have to compromise anything they could've done had they been exclusive just because they now have to work over a variety of consoles and online infrastructures.

Eh, there's better Bungie-related things to occupy my mind right now. No use in worry about this now.

Spiker is a fine weapon, beefed up for single-wielding?
Or pull a Plasma Repeater on it and do a different weapon altogether?

Agreed, this is how I see it.

To be fair, Bungie likely entered into talks and/or an agreement long before the IW nastiness surfaced. And their relationship with Activision is further removed than IW's was. And Activision aren't Satan, they're just (currently, not historically) the most ruthlessly business-minded of the publishers, headed by a man who has all but gone on record as saying gamers are there to be exploited and mined for their cash.

As I said in the other thread, it's disheartening more than anything else. And the timing, for a number of reasons, couldn't be worse.

What's really interesting is that across the Internet, people aren't even seizing on the "Bungie going multiplatform confirmed" part of the story, but are seemingly united in their discontent and their dislike for Activision.

I'm actually grateful that the Activision news took my mind off the beta, to be honest. Pretty shitty day for me so far.

I imagine the campaign will feature more of a varied Brute sandbox than we might see in the multiplayer sandbox(to reduce redundancy, ect.). Just like how we'll see plasma rifles in campaign but not in multiplayer.

Yep, I think they expected some kind of "hooray" from the gamers because now everyone will be able to enjoy Bungie games, but it somehow goes into the wrong direction. Would be interesting to see Bungie´s reaction watching our reactions.

Vid says 9 month ago.

And as far as being excited over multi-plat, we don't really gain anything, do we? That news is great for PS3 people but if you own a 360 all it means is that you no longer get 100% customized content. As said above, Bungie games have fit like a glove in the past but how can they retain that when developing across multiple consoles?

I wonder how the decision was made. Was it only the management, or was there some kind of company vote (Pub A proposes X, pub B proposes Y, pub C proposes Z, what do you guys prefer?).

Probably only management.

Considering Activision ruined Guitar Hero, Tony Hawk and Call of Duty, I see nothing good coming from this. In fact, I see bad. Lots of bad.

I wouldn't mind seeing both brutes with the spiker and the mauler.

They haven't ruined Call of Duty yet.

At least not in my opinion, I got alot of play and fun out of MW2. Maybe not as much as CoD4 sure but well worth the money I paid and definetly a great game.

That was unexpected. Bungie have always been very community orientated, so it'll be interesting to see if they'll curb Activision's ways of shitting on players.

I wouldn't be surprised if no brute weapons made into multiplayer (besides the hammer). Bungie said (more specifically Sage) that they felt that Halo 3 had too many weapons and that they were trimming the weapon count down for Reach.

Just out of curiosity, were any European sites given beta code giveaways? I was surprised when Eurogamer didn't have any, and then I realized I couldn't think of any.
Yeah, I asked the editor if they would have footage and he indicated they wouldn't have any till the beta actually started. I can't figure out why they'd be excluded from not having any codes or any footage.

I think it's because (I'm pretty sure) Bungie have hinted they'd like to go Multi-platform before and as soon as its not MS publishing its pretty obvious it will be.

Look out for that third person action CoD game in the future! Oh and the MMO!!:lol

The big difference it's that Bungie will keep the property of their IP.

But Activision has tricks up their sleeves :D

Have the multiplayer and singleplayer sandboxes ever differed in the other games? I can't recall their being a difference off the top of my head. It would definetly make sense for Reach with the amount of weapons in the game.

Yeah, my point exactly. They are free to put as much of the brute sandbox into the campaign sections as they want without actually including it in multiplayer.

Shake Appeal said:
No, but those who are getting them received a PM telling them as much.

If you haven't got a PM, you aren't getting a code, unless you win a giveaway somewhere.
:(
Guess I didn't win the podcast entry contest then. Well let's hope one of my other entries win. Although I definitely haven't singed up for as many contests as some of you guys did.

Banshee in H2 (FRG in SP, not in MP). FRG wasn't in H2 MP, and isn't on any H3 map by default. Same with the Sentinel Beam. The Super Sentinel Beam is in H3 SP but not in H3 MP. Same for Invincibility Equipment.

Podcast entry may be different, I don't know. I'm talking only about the codes they hand out to certain long-term community people.

I very much doubt you'll see Bungie employees spending much time on GAF today to ask them, though.

It's strange that Microsoft would fling money at marketing the beta on Sky Sports and ITV after goddamn Champions League semi-finals, and then provide fewer avenues to Europeans to get in the thing. But I'm also unsurprised.

Wow that was the worst sleep of my life.

I woke up nearly every hour and looked at the clock in pure anticipation... Then this morning one of my friends messaged me saying "Wow Reach is so good, get online we got our F&F codes".

Seconds later I was half dressed and fully downstairs.

It is now 6:08AM and he admitted it was just a joke, but at this point I am to excited to go back to bed. I am certainly looking forward to finally getting my hands on this game.

As for Bungie and Activision... My immediate response is what the fuck, but there must be a method to their madness. I will give Bungie the benefit of the doubt on this one and see how it plays out.

Well hey guys its Activision Blizzard now, hopefully they end up on the Blizzard side :lol Also its just for this one IP, and they are working on more than 1 new IP.

I feel you man, I didn't get any decent sleep last night. I feel like a fucking zombie.:lol

"a partnership between Bungie and Activision and ends where we always knew it would, with World Domination."

Well that's for damn sure...

Anyways, I feel a bit better about reading the release, it seems Bungie shielded themselves from the whole IW fiasco by keeping creative and IP control.

Ah of course. Cheers for clarifying that, was quite curious for no reason in particular :lol

Now I think about it there's a few pieces of equipment in Halo 3 that don't cross too, the auto turret thingy and the active camo is a powerup rather than equipment.

You may now go back to your regularly scheduled "OH GOD BUNGIE WHHHHHHHHY" for the next 20 pages.

They are already heading out, so unless you have gone into any Twitter competitions etc, you might be out of luck.

Thanks for the cup, it's full now. Can I have another?

I whored myself out on twitter yesterday and the day before. Doubtful I win anything but it was worth a shot.

I come online to read some impressions about the Beta, and I see this? Activision? Seriously? After what happened with Infinity Ward? EA is a far better alternative (and EA has Peter Moore, would love to see another Bungie-game tattoo on the man:lol ).

While I'm disappointed Bungie chose Activision, I'm not too worried. As Dani said, I doubt Bungie would make a deal with a publisher that would jeopardize its independence.

And besides, Activision only has control over one, ONE, ONE new IP Bungie will be putting out, their next one. This means that, aside from Bungie's next new IP, Bungie can do whatever it wants with any other game it makes, as long as it doesn't deal with this new IP.

I'm in the cautiously optimistic camp.

Also Activision only has publishing rights, they have no IP rights or anything, so all they can do is slap their logo on before the start of a game and nothing more, Bungie has all creative freedom :D

I know how you feel. I did a few and the Giantbomb quests. :lol I have my ODST ready but I would have liked to sneak in earlier too.

So back to the Reach talk after getting steamrolled by the Activision announcement. One thing that has me concerned for Reach is lack of maps. Not lack of overall maps, just how the maps are divided up. Halo 1, 2 and 3 all launched with around 12 MP maps. The problem with Reach is that there are 3 different categories maps fall in: Classic MP, Invasion, and whatever the firefight mode is. I just hope when Reach launches each category will have more then 4 maps to choose from. Bungie keeps saying that this is their biggest project ever. I hope each MP category will have plenty of maps to chose from on launch, not just a few for each category.
