Halo: Reach Beta Thread

8 seconds was a guesstimate on my part :lol I've never actually timed it -- could be more or less.
It's just annoying. Still, this game is almost as fun as Halo 3. Probably more fun once I learn all of its intricacies.

1) Campaign tech is focused on bringing not only split screen and online co-op, but massive battles that involve vehicles, large rendering distances, lots and lots of weapons, and a shit ton of AI driven characters.
2) Multiplayer has to support four player split screen.

This is what I believe brings down Halo's graphics. Doesn't mean that just about every other AAA title doesn't look better. [/spoiler]

Yes, the above are good points. No other console FPS has the scale that Halo 3 has.

But, on the other hand, if I'm not mistaken, the Halo 3 engine is basically just a jazzed up Halo 2 engine. And it sounds like Reach is a jazzed up Halo 3 engine (and looks that way). So, why the lack of investment in the core engine driving the games? Are they pouring that into this new multiplat game? Or, agian, do they just not care? (i.e. it could look like dogshit and still sell millions).

Kenak said:
Do you have to notice or care? No. You can love the graphics and what not. Just understand that some people won't and they'll have good reasons for being underwhelmed when coming out of Banjo Kazooie, Alan Wake, Gears, Resident Evil, or hell, even PS3 exclusives.
Yes, I always wonder why people freak out when they see criticism about Halo graphics. It's pretty obvious, from a technical perspective at least (aliasing, sub HD, 30fps, etc.) that they ain't that. Art direction, etc., is another thing.

Minor irritation: names and descriptions of saved films and screenshots aren't highlighted by default, so you have to delete them before you can write new ones.

Just select sprint as your ability. Instant more-fun. Sprint is like the karmic reward for all the weapons being lame and the nades broken.

I don't think I have used anything but sprint today. :lol

Annnd there's your problem. This isn't Halo 3. Stop treating and trying to compare the Battle Rifle of those games to this game using a DMR. It isn't the same weapon and you should go in a battle acting like it is.

This is also a beta. Why on Earth are you even talking about Sniper Rifle starts?

The DMR start isn't exactly needed as an every-match weapon; perhaps you should learn to use the Pistol more effectively and *gasp* using strategic ways to counter your opponent rather than running in trying to be Rambo.

People clamored for BR-starts in Halo 2/3 because of weak starting weapons. And primarily, BR starts were better for larger, open maps, and these maps in the beta aren't even large at all, at least until we get into Invasion (which carry larger loadouts and I'm sure one is a DMR-start).

Halo 3 Beta?

Armor Lock may not be OPed, but it's fucking awful. Slows down the game and adds nothing. And it looks stupid as well. Worst AA by far.

I used to think grenades were broken, not because they were powerful but because they felt inconsistent. But I've figured them out.

The blast radius is much larger, and the damage dealt throughout the blast radius decreases outward at a much more gradual rate. So at the epicenter of the blast, a grenade is an instant-kill against a fully shielded opponent -- a great reward for a perfectly placed grenade.

As you move away from the epicenter, the blast deals progressively less damage. This is different than Halo 3, where there was basically an invisible wall around the grenade explosion and you either took damage or you did not. Now the damage you take varies very nicely.

I think the grenades feel great now. Nice and powerful, and you can huck them across the entire map if you want to. Really gives players using close or mid range weapons a nice tool to use against longer range weapons (see AR vs. DMR). Love it.

Grenade spamming will go away. Why? Because for every lucky grenade spam that results in a kill, thats one less grenade you'll have on you when you actually NEED it in the heat of combat. Look for people to hold onto these things like gold as they start to realize just how valuable they are. The chance of a kill on a random toss isnt worth the security you give up walking into battle.

I couldn't disagree more. I'm sorry, but a one hit grenade kill if you are right on the grenade is not what halo is about, except for plasmas because they don't bounce everywhere. Powerful grenades are fine, but the blast radius needs to be reduced then. If you want to balance a game, you need to exchange one for the other not both.

:lol :lol :lol
Grenade spamming will not go away, if it's bad now even when people have only 1 grenade to spawn with, then I'm afraid of what the full game will feel like. The 1 grenade spawns are fine, the only problem is that I noticed grenades are plentiful on the maps, and I would go maybe 10 seconds without picking up more. Another big complaint is the number of death grenades I've encountered, yeah it has always been in halo, but not like this. There have been countless amount of times when I am killing a guy, he has no shields and I'm at 75% shields and full health. I get the headshot in to kill him, however he gets off a nice grenade right before he dies. Now in Halo 3, this would just lower my shields all the way and not kill me, but in Reach it's pretty much an instant kill then depending on my location to the grenade. That is not fun gameplay, it encourages grenade spam, in a sense it can almost be like a free kill in your pocket.

The one thing I agree about is the grenade throwing, it just feels right and Bungie did an excellent job on it.

You look stupid. Armour lock looks goddammed awesome.

Not sure how anything in those game is even remotely close to jetpacks, camo radar jammer, sprinting, and invincibility.

One example I recall was Halo 2 introducing dual wielding, some hardcore Halo 1 players whined that "now anyone can just spray and pray w/ two SMGs, this is bullshit, in Halo CE I would have owned these n00bs" Then they learned how to deal with them, and they stopped whining.

Stuff is new, it requires new strategies. The playing field has been temporarily leveled.

So thought this was pretty funny. I jumped down on a guy below me from pretty far while I had a rocket launcher. Assassinated him and this is the resulting image.

Here is the video that goes along with it but unfortunately I can't render it :(

This thing is donging on my K/D ratio. I don't think I've ever had one below 1 for a multiplayer game. I have achieved that with Reach.

On rare opportunity. I save it for special occasions, such as for idiots who think going into Armor Lock when they're on their lonesome will save them.

It's because you're the dumbest person on the planet. A real mouth-breather, incapable of formulating a clear and rational though. In fact, it's an honest-to-Jesus miracle that you haven't fallen over dead for lack of the ability to move food from a plate and into your stupid face.

I assume you have a caretaker. Please give them a raise.

(Yeah, this is jokes.)

;)

Or it might be the hyperbolic, "this is the worst looking thing ever" manner in which you present your opinion. Rubs people the wrong way. Criticisms, as you can plainly see, are welcome. Yup, there are better looking games out there. Nope, none of them are doing what Halo is doing under the hood and looking pretty while doing it. Does that require concessions to be made? LEMME FINISH! Yes. But those concessions are what makes Halo gloriously Halo-y.

tl;dr - INTERNET.

I love the nade launcher but damn it feels weak compared to regular grenades, unless I hit them dead on it doesn't even drop their shields sometimes, did a nice take out on a jet pack spartan though :D

It's ok, after Monday it will go straight back up. That's what I'm hoping anyways.

Keep using it. There are people here that wield the grenade launcher like an extension of their arm. Grenade Launcher gunkata is to be feared.

I quite enjoy watching them lock, then timing a grenade at their feet when they come out of it. I call it lock 'n pop.

It has less splash. Keep a bit of distance between you and your target and always hold and release as the shot travels. Takes a few tries to get the feel down, but once you do, it's nasty. Trust me, I have a 1.72 K/D. Probably shits all over kylej's.

Edit: yup, just checked. Pooped on.

How is it over powered? It only:
  • Makes you invulnerable for a good 8 seconds.
  • Has a relatively quick cooldown.
  • Can be used in short bursts.
  • Sheds off all needles and plasmas to avoid instant death.
  • Removes the shields of anything near you when you run out of juice.
  • Removes the shields from anyone who melees you.
  • Destroys vehicles.
Oh, wait..

It's only overpowered if someone is dumb enough to either touch you while you're locked, or decide to stand close to you as it breaks and you EMP. Both of those are in the control of the other player.

I'm really not understanding most of the complaints, particularly from people who I thought would love this game. (kylej) This game rewards skill in Bungie's gametypes more than any game before it. I can probably count on one hand the times I've been killed by mindless AR spraying.I never feel like I get cheated when I die really, aside from the nade spam sometimes. I rarely ever look for any other long range weapon because the Pistol is so versatile...and really the only games I've lost are against pro dudes, so this talk about the AR being the best weapon and the game being completely random are pretty crazy to me.

I know that was some mindless rambling...:lol

Don't forget teammates who go -14!

Can anybody tell me if you guys finally found out how the Arena rating works? (all games counting equally toward score or only the best 3 games counting, etc.) ...cause I'm still really confused on that

I was stoked when I found out where that spawns on Powerhouse. No one has ever used it in the games I played either so its always there. I need to get used to its arc though, it travels differently than I thought it would.

Yup, that's the art I'm trying to learn. Armor Lock gives a nice audio cue when it's about to expire; I've had a few lock and pop experiences and they delicious, every one.

AL seems like an ability that will be more handy on vehicle-heavy maps, and on games with a tighter knit team; going into it solo just delays death, but with partners around it can be a great distraction.

Also, I noticed in Three Plots there was not a Load Out with Armor Lock available. We had some pre-beta discussions in the thread about using it to finish off territories, which I was concerned about. But for that mode at least Bungie isn't allowing it. Yay.

I enjoy that there are so many Gaffers in the beta I get a message from someone on the other team, "Gaf?". :lol
Some random dude I got matched up with asked this in the post-game carnage report:
"Dax01, are you Dax from NeoGAF?"
:lol

From previous page: Does anybody know what the "Technician" commendation is for? It says "Perform an incredible feat in matchmaking" on Bnet. I've gotten it a few times in mm. Any ideas?
