Halo: Reach Beta Thread

Stockpile is dull and doesn't work as designed. For it to work right, the flags need to disappear after each "round." You can try to remove the opponents flags all day long, but you're just gonna do it temporarily. There needs to be a reason for me to actually bother playing offensively.

Confused by this, the benefit of playing offensively is being able to terrorize their flag location enough to keep them from getting any captures.

Our team usually has one person stealing the other teams flags or trying to throw them out of the zone before the countdown ends, another guarding ours, and the other two gathering/helping player 1.

Stockpile is my second favorite new gametype, right behind covy slayer.

To be fair, "I'm gonna kill shit rather than do the objective because I can get my k/d to go up" is pretty common in lots of shooters, not just Halo. It's not like Stockpile's THAT hard to figure out, some people just don't give a crap.

As for Sprint, offensive sprinting is awesome when you're behind a guy who isn't paying attention. It makes closing in for an assassination a lot easier. You can also surprise people by closing in for a melee faster than they're trying to.

I would rather have a higher win/loss record then a high kill/death record, I lost like 4 games of stockpile because people just wanted to kill and don't care about the stupid flags

Correct.

This film is one that is available for download to your 360 via bungie.net, and you can watch it on your system as with any film. Since the file is just game data, it's only viewable on your 360.

This film is rendered, meaning it's been converted into a video file you can stream or download on your PC, in addition to downloading the film to your 360 for normal theater viewing. Rendering for viewing on bungie.net requires Bungie Pro. However, anyone with a subscription can render the film for you. Post a link to it, and I can click to render it. It will be visible on your "rendered films" section of the File Share on bungie.net, even after you remove it from your file share.

Thanks for all the info guys. Was just a little confused how Pro works. Not anymore.:D
BTW while I couldn't get into the Reach servers last night I took a peak over at Halo Waypoint. I had no Idea there was a GAF montage there. Some amazing kills in there.:lol
Well done!

1621 daily rating is good enough for me today I guess. It's starting to get really hard to get those kinds of positive spreads with all the new entrants that aren't good and get you killed, and the good people who are getting better. I think that's where it will rest in the near future as playtime for everyone increases.

Oh, trust me, I know, I'm agreeing with you. Plenty of people online, apparently, don't. :(

Here comes the speech i give to all u liltle MW fanboys...
CoD MW did not invent FPS games, loadouts, sprinting, or knifing. what next, u gona say Halo ripped off explosions from CoD? Lemme give u an example of what u sound like: "OMG Halo ripped off playin a game on TV from pong!!! Bungie Sucks!" or this "I saw grass and sprinting in Halo, but i saw it in Mario first, way for bungie to rip off Mario". u guys are stupid, and need to think before u talk!

:lol :lol

You guys can't post Bnet forum links in here anymore. It's the only time I visit those boards and the threads linked are always gold so that I can't stop myself from joining in on the fun lol

Yer gunna get baned.

Wanna play some Reach tonight? I haven't played with you in a loooooong time.

Yea, you're right. It has been a while. If I get on tonight I'll hit you up.

I don't know if I'm gonna play Arena. It's turning me into a stat whoring, weapon whoring...uhhh, whore. Yesterday I was playing and I kept checking my rating mid game and was just trying so hard not to die. I was using radar and shotgun and camping with sniper. It was totally not me, I was just doing it to get the best rating that I could. I was doing well, but it wasn't satisfying at all. :/

Yup. Video is now rendering, should be viewable in half an hour or so. :)

Edit: they got the servers caught up - it's already rendered. Great clip, BTW. Hammer FTW, indeed. :D

Too much stockpile on Swordbase and Powerhouse. YOU CAN VOTE, PEOPLE.
Am I alone in thinking that Red Team has a distinct advantage on Powerhouse for Stockpile? High ground flag cap, quicker access to the power weapons, and the majority of the flags seem to spawn closer to their side (sorry if this was brought up already; I had to skip a lot of pages over the weekend).

Case in point: Blue Team game. Red Team game. Matchmaking kept my group paired up with the opposing team, which was pretty nice actually. IMO the other group was a better team, but we pulled it off when we switched over to Red. I wouldn't mind seeing Red return spot moved closer to the rock garden; at least then you'd have to move out of position to gain higher ground defense, much like you have to do on Blue Team. It would also even out the travel distance between both teams for the power weapons.

it would be nice if they had grab bag for all game types and then another just for team slayer without having to play arena, this might help a little bit.

I'm kind of annoyed that I got my first Daily Rating before the general public got on, as it meant I was playing with all the guys who had been hammering the game for days and were super-competitive. Some of my friends last night were beating up on newcomers and getting 1650 games, whereas I'm averaging 1550-1600 so far.

Yeah, it's been talked about, and I agree: Red Team has it easier.

Is the targeting bloom actually literal? As the reticule gets bigger does that actually become the area of deviation for the bullet, or will the bullet always fire in the middle of the crosshair and the blooming is only there to throw you off?

I ask because I rarely found the blooming of the reticule to mess up long distance firing, even though in most other games, if the reticule had become that large I wouldn't be able to hit a thing from that distance.

Ended with 1609 Daily.

:/
Where are you guys seeing your daily ratings on Bungie.net? I can only see my per-game ratings by drilling down into each game.

I seriously think that all votes should start Blank so people would have to choose what they want to play. As pointed out before, I really think that there are people that do not see the voting options (you can argue that it's too opaque).

As the reticule gets bigger, the deviation increases, which is why bloom is really no different at all from BR spread in Halo 3. Ugh, I hate it because of that fact.

Still find it strange that sometimes I score headshots when i'm not aiming at someones face, or is there some minor auto aim going on?

Isn't the daily next to your name in Matchmaking after the 3 "daily games bars" are filled up?

Good question, if there isn't a way to see daily ratings in your game history, then there should be.

It would work if the enemy didn't spawn on you. I can kill the entire team, start to grab a flag and take it far away and i'll get 5 steps in and die. I'm too slow and beat up and vulnerable with the flag. They grab the flag back and round round we go. Doesn't help that it's really easy to turtle in this game.
It's also really not that exciting. There's too much to do. There's no main focus, so all the action is scattered around, and as others have mentioned, half of it is pointless action.

For what I've seen, stockpile games are always really close and it really depends on who is where and where the flags end up spawning. One time, the game started and 3 flags were right next to our base. The enemy tried to do something about it, but i kept spawning and we kept camping and of course, we won the game 10 to 8 or something. It's silly.

If the game was faster paced, then maybe this gametype would work, but the game is really slow and deliberate, so having 3 focal points (flags) at a time and 2 bases just is silly.

Maybe a 1 base stockpile would work better. Offense and defense or something.

I have a Live Silver Account.

How do I use the 48Hour trial that came with Halo legends?

I try to redeem it but it tells me that the code is for another offer that is not available here.

Help?

Maybe. Guess I don't see it because I only played three Arena games?
http://www.bungie.net/Stats/Reach/Default.aspx?player=NullPointer256

Or do you have to WIN 3 games at least? Don't heckle my stats too mad. Just started and all. And it was a schoolnight.

Yeah.

Your rating takes into account whether you won or lost, so you should just have to play 3 games. Stats have been funky since the beta went wide, so that could be it. I lost two 1600+ matches that way :(

You know what sucks? Going into matchmaking with a friend and getting paired up with two people who don't know what the fuck they're doing!

"OH HURR LETS GO RUN AROUND KILL SHIT"

You asshole, go defend the stockpile while I grab more! >:(
One of the biggest things Reach does differently that Halo 3 is put the emphasis on going in with a full team, or rather punishes you more for not having a full group of people that you're familiar with. I'm not sure whether that's a good thing or not just yet. It'll be great for the beta, since just about everyone on my FL is playing right now on a constant basis. The real test comes after the game ships, when there will be less people to choose from, and I'm stuck going in with just one buddy or (even worse) going in alone.

I simply love the purity of Reach. They keep refining an excellent combat system. What Starcraft did for RTS Halo does and continues to do for FPS.

I'll give you my Needler when you take it from my cold, dead hands!

So are Daily Ratings pretty much useless once you qualify for a division?
If you don't keep up your game you will end up being pushed down as others get better, so you need to keep playing to prove your skills :P so if you were to end up in gold and not play for 3 months, you might come back to being silver or something.

Not the most spectacular clip but I was proud of how I "earned" the hammer and finished the game out with the last 4 kills. Thank goodness for the Skill level search.:lol

I was just over a 1:1 k/d in the last couple Halos but I have a feeling this one is really going to test my skills as I'm really having trouble using the DMR. Is my Battle Rifle gone for good. =(

Agreed,

You can be invisible for 30 seconds but sprinting more than 10yrds is a BIIIIIIIG no-no! :lol
Full sprint bar comes back after 4 seconds, takes about 20 seconds to get all your cloaking ability back to full...

Also sprint jump, you can go miles before you run out doing that.

:/

1609 isn't bad, and you could raise it substantially if you get a higher rating in a game than 1509 which shouldn't be hard for you considering how well you did in the other two games. If you get like a 1600, then it'll replace your lowest game, and you'd have like a 1640 daily.

I know how you feel. I was having a really good game and noticed I was third on the list for me team. A wtf went through my mind and I spent the rest of the game just trying to get assists and only kill to make sure I wasn't going to die >.>

BTW, in case you didn't notice it, you can download the video using the link right below the player. The videos will likely go offline at some point between when the Beta ends and Reach ships, so save'em for posterity while you can.

The Focus Rifle reminds me of Robotnik's laser at the end of Sonic & Knuckles. Loud, shoots a big fucking beam and scares the shit outta me.
This. When Carney said "it's terrifying to get hit by it" in the vidoc, I thought, "how can a weapon be terrifying to get hit by? Meh."

Then I got hit by it, and it's a pant-soiling, "oh god get it away from me the paaaaaiin..." kind of experience. :lol

End of the beta.

my guess is the current arena formula is designed to discourage camping. i.e. you get a few kills, go +6 and then hide the rest of the game.

Very difficult to judge, but once you're able to figure out the duration you need to hold the trigger for each distance, the thing is a beast.

Agreed.

I am expecting players to be better with it when they get to play with it in campaign. Mp is not really good for learning weapons.

Sometimes randoms can work nice in a team. Just had a pretty good stockpile match with people saying what they were doing, and taking designated spots (defense, flag grabbers, how many go to mess up the other teams pile, etc.)
