Halo: Reach Beta Thread

and we definitely don't need a repeat of what happened at the start of the halo 3 beta :P that was chaos

Well, if it is a cluster fuck again (it will be) maybe they'll be nice like with the Halo 3 beta and give everyone a few extra days to play it?

I hope the next generation has same-day releases for digital download games. With preloading. And activation times localized to your time zone.

God bless you, Steam.

Yep, Steam is pretty awesome for this. The morning of L4D2's release was epic.

Has how the motion tracker works now been talked about? I just noticed it in one of the videos up on B.net. Really liking that, though the person playing seemed confused. :lol

I'm not sure if it's been explained in detail by Bungie, but many people have noted that it shows the dots in a different shade of yellow/red depending on whether they are above or below you.

Looked like it was a dark red if they're below, and a normal bright red, with a dark trail if they're above. But I could be wrong.

We need someone to do a nice HD feed and have a cut out for the Radar, just so we can see the changes. :D

Doubt I will win a F&F code but i'll be spending a lot of time watching the rendered video section of bungie.net, nice to see they allow such a feature to work in a beta, thanks bungie you sold me on a bungie pro account :P

SO has the jelly water effect been removed in reach? it's like non exsistant in the video clip "water fight"

Same. I will be getting bungie pro after the 10th though, since I don't get paid till then. Well that and render credits.

The Beta guide only says "Slayer" and "Slayer Pro" loadout palettes. They didn't bother saying what those where comprised of and all I got out of Urk was laser starts. I'm afraid slayer pro could tun out to be DMR+AR and with the DMR being pretty weak in CQC most of the CQC will devolve into spraying. The pistol seems more versatile than the DMR so I'd almost rather take AR+magnum starts over DMR+AR. Crossing my fingers for DMR+magnum starts but we'll see. There could also be more than one weapon loadout because the description for Slayer Classic details the primary and secondary weapon but the other two slayer variants don't. Not sure why they wouldn't if they too all their loadouts had the same weapon.
Aw man. Why can't I have a weapon that's effective at all ranges?!

Hey Gaf I was hoping to get a review of Fall of Reach. Would those of you who have read it recommend it as a good read? I would really like a book which details the Spartan training program to give me a good background for the game.

Thanks in advance and I appreciate any and all input.
I've been re-reading Fall of Reach. It's a good book. I'd definitely give it a read.

Anyway, it's Thursday. Cat's out of the bag...

Because the BR was a piece of annoying shit aka why use another gun when you have a BR?

Why are so many people planning to download the beta today? prepare to
disappoint

Wasn't it you that was bitching about the shotgun being confined to short range, and sniper long, or something stupid like that?
Huh? I have never said I wanted a weapon that's effective at all ranges. What you're referring to is my complaining about how the sniper can be effective at close range when it was clearly made for long range, so, why not the reverse for, say, the shotgun?

I never said you wanted a weapon that's effective at all ranges. You saying that just reminded me of your complaint before. And about that complaint:

Because it makes no sense at all? :lol

Then Halo: Reach would be MW2. :lol

I know what you mean about the Sniper Rifle. I can use it long range but if anyone rushes me, I utterly suck with it. :lol

The Focus Rifle seems to also bridge the short and long distance gap.

That's not what he's saying. He's saying that the sniper can be used for both long and short range, so why can't the shotgun?

the chances are so slim, but i really hope i win an early access code.
anyway: i hope everything goes smoothly on monday...

I'm not getting into this again. It's clear you don't remember the outcome of said discussion.

My reply was that it would be more like MW2, where you can have a shotgun that has both short and long range ability.

I like the fact that guns have strengths and weaknesses. It kinda forces people to become proficient with more weapons and use them in the right situation.

I always felt the BR had all bases covered, hence everyone and their Spartan-dogs using them. :lol

One positive thing I noticed from one of the rendered videos: the frag grenade now makes a very distinct sound while in flight, somewhere between the original sound and the sound of the spike grenade.

One 'negative' thing: at one point the announcer text reads 'You assassinated Buninja02 down', which is clearly meant to read either 'You beat Buninja02 down' or 'You assassinated Buninja02'.

Just out of curiosity, were any European sites given beta code giveaways? I was surprised when Eurogamer didn't have any, and then I realized I couldn't think of any.

You could always play BC2 and use slugs rather than bucks. ;)
Too true....

I didn't see this video posted, but you all probably have seen it given how there aren't many rendered videos up on Bnet. Here's a full Team Slayer game. DMR starts.

Edit: Did anyone understand what happened at ~3:43? Was it lag or some new mechanic for a defense against the sword?

Uhh... that's not what I was suggesting. I think its fine that the BR's role has been replaced with two separate guns. What I was saying is the pistol is the the skill-CQC weapon so Slayer Pro should have that as the default sidearm. In normal slayer players will spawn with both the AR and magnum which really occupy the same role with one being slightly more long range and the other being something for newer players to use to get the hang of aiming. That's fine for normal and classic slayer but no good for slayer pro. Those that vote for slayer pro want to be able to differentiate themselves in CQC with the pistol.

Anyways, this film is from a match of "Slayer" and the player is spawning with only the DMR and sprint. I think it must be an arena match (here's 1 2 3 examples that are interesting because you can kinda see what kind of performance nets certain scores). This arena result is particularly interesting because of the disparity in K/D spreads yet they receive relatively similar ratings. Hard to what could've caused this because the amount of assists aren't shown (could we get that added).

He actually thinks the exact opposite. That the sniper rifle is too easy to use at CQC. He just runs around with it CQC no-scoping kids and gets bored by how easy he pulls it off.

Diablohead said:
Annoying, I spot people in the corner of the screen but the player does not, then he dies by them.

About as bad as him freaking out at a red dot near him and throwing nades randomly.

Raide said:
Is it me or can you hear the Spartan breath heavily when he sprints?

Yeah, you can. It's one of those little things that just adds to the already excellent sound design.

Okay, this is absolutely the last video I watch before bailing out of the thread until Monday.

Excellent. Its nice to see some more of these vids where people are actually using AA's.

Oh, does the Plasma Sword still clash or have they removed that?

Ooooh. Okay. I got you. I understand where you're coming from, given your style of play. Doesn't really bother me, though, cause I like the AR.

I hate it when somebody headshots me with the sniper rifle from 2 meters distance. It doesn't make sense TBH.

Why not? Are SR bullets harmless before they reach long distance? :lol

It's pretty impressive how simply being able to sprint completely changes the game.

Indeed. The clip I saw a moment ago where someone sprinted around the corner to get the cowering Spartan was shocking. :lol

The weapons sound amazing. Especially the sniper; even a missed shot gave me chills.

Can't wait to hear all of that on my speakers.
