Halo: Reach Beta Thread

I'm actually more split on the game than I was expecting to be. The default controls are convoluted, and the gun play doesn't feel good - it doesn't feel like Halo to me at all.
Wow really? Wasn't expecting that at all. Looks really awesome from what I've seen in the stream, can't wait to get a crack at it myself.

I'm sorry to hear. Is the player movement a lot different in terms of changing direction, because I was/am a bit worried about this. Oh well, Halo 3 isn't going anywhere is it.

Can you elaborate on this?

I think that's because they feel more weighted.

Just from watching the stream it looks like every weapon is incredibly weak. All these new loud gun sounds belong to weapons that do damage like toys.

Be interesting to see how many people stay away from this because of the Activision name.

I never bought Bungie software anyway, so it makes no difference to me.

Have fun buying your $25 map packs though.

Reach isn't being published by Activision so your point is entirely moot.

What do you think about the way the game looks?
I can only judge it by screens and videos, but the color palette really bothers me.

It's the gun play. It doesn't feel like any of the other Halo games. I remember playing the Halo 3 beta for the first time, and my first impression was the weapons felt heavier, meatier, and more satisfying to use. It's the opposite right now, none of the weapons felt satisfying. The visual feedback on them feels light, and killing guys was never satisfying.

And boy am I struggling with the new default controls. :lol

My hands are large, and don't rest on the bumpers naturally. So having two critical functions on them really twists my hands up.

It's just different, I had to hop off to take a break and soak it in. But my first impression wasn't that great. :\

So that CTF mode where you physically move around the flags and they don't disappear on capture, new addition? New variant?

Yep. Called Stockpile. Every 60 seconds every flag that's in a circle gets captured, even if someone is holding it. Once that happens, four flags refresh across the map. First team to 10 captures win.

Edit: Should've refreshed.

Just giving my impressions. I certainly don't expect a man desperate for a F&F invite to post any dissenting comments.

The lower tier weapons do seem a little weak, unless you play SWAT. With the Shield and Health changes, it does seem to take that bit longer to down someone. Well, until you start getting Needle Rifles and above. :lol

Maybe its just taking time for people to get use to the new weapons but don't let people discourage you from posting your views. Its the kind of stuff Bungie need to make things better.

Watching the stream, the pistol really brings back H:CE memories. I know it isn't exactly the same, but close to mid range it seems damn close. I can't wait to play with it.

Sorry to hear that Ghaleon. As far as the controls, I got used to BJ so using the bumpers for critical functions for myself is second nature now. Considering using default though since AAs require holding down a button to use.

The video looks glorious I think. I've been waiting for a similar Halo: CE experience but featuring newer ideas from the sequels. It looks like I'm getting what I wanted.

I'm not sure all of them do - I only realized it on my last game just now, but Sprint at least was a toggle - I could click it once and keep sprinting, then click it to turn it off. (That, or the button is busted on my controller.)

I parked the first game in File Share to render out, but it's not on b.net yet.

Hm, that sounds really strange. So, its more of a visual feedback thing? Or is it weapon behavior all around? A little scary to hear t be honest... What about everyone else?

Congrats to you guys that got a F&F invite..

Also, Bungie + Activision got me by surprise today.. Hope it works out well.

Hmm, awesome if that's the case. That means the only thing that would really be broken on BJ would be jetpacks which are only a loss on Swordbase.

Heh, I'd backed out of the beta before my file was fully transferred to the File Share. That'll do it!

When you render a film, it gives you some information:

Render Request Number #24

Render Request Date: April 29, 2010, 9:38 AM PDT

Estimated Completion Date: April 29, 2010, 9:53 AM PDT

Resolution: SD - 640x360 WMV

Total Render Minute Cost: 12 minutes

Current Status: Currently Rendering Film
Pretty handy.

The FF feature on the Theater is buttery smooth now. Much slicker than Halo 3's was.

I have classes for the next 7 hours.

Going to be absolute torture...
I'm definitely glad to be done with classes for the most part at this point. I never go to my Thursday class, I only have to show up for a moment at my chem class tomorrow to pick up an exam, and then three finals on monday and tuesday and I'm all done:D

Relax. Took me about an hour and a half to shake the description you just posted.

Once you get used to it, it feels like Halo all over again. May not make sense now, but will by this afternoon. Jump around the playlists too. You'll start to "feel" it shortly.

Now when I go back to H3 it feels weird.

Is it possible to select a clip for rendering from within the beta client?

got a code, downloading

but i have to be honest, this kinda feels like 'swinging' with a couple who are going through divorce proceedings

anyway, i am letting the kids have first crack at it (on my account) so they might not respond to invites - see you in a few hours

I'm coming!

Oh my god, HaloGAF just played an epic game of Stockpile. :lol at Sai-Kun tossing the flag off the edge to secure the victory.
Super
awesome.

stosh posted a F&F code on BNet. I wonder it was just a one time thing to get people to freak out or codes are starting to drop.
