Halo: Reach Beta Thread

Oh yeah, Bungie needs to add some sort of indicator for how far along you are in your rank when you view your stats or something. As is, the only time I can see how close I am to ranking up is when I receive my cR.

Well, I would be cool with chatty options enforcing no PC, because when you chose that option you are implicitly agreeing to be chatty.

Oh man, so OuterWorldVoice is Stinkles? Man I think I'm late to the one.

Well, I expect people to play as a team in every team mode, doesn't mean they're going to. MLG settings or whatever they are this time, while yes they are used for 'high level' play, every match you play is not 'high level'. I like MLG settings for some games I've played because I think they make the game better, but i don't suddenly think that I'm playing on some 'higher level' than all the other vanilla <insert game title here> players.

Essentially I don't agree that when something is more 'balanced' it automatically becomes more 'serious'

If having "Chatty" means I can't get teammates that are in PC, then great. But I don't know how that would work. I mean, if I wanna be able to be in PC if I'm playing some Actionsack or what not, would I have to change my SS everytime I go back and forth to Arena?

You don't think Arena is more serious than regular MM? Isn't that the whole point of Arena, to be 'more serious' ?

I don't really understand your last sentence? Where did I say that?

PedroLumpy said:
Yeah, that's the point, we should be complaining about that, rather than trying to tell someone else what to do.

Yeah sorry I had typed that last one up while you were typing that up etc. etc. etc. It's getting really hard to follow with the thread motoring along. So yeah you can think I'm some self absorbed racist asshat, and I'll think you're a facist and we'll call it even.

lolwut?

Soldat7, I don't know how much you can compare MW2 TDM and H:R Arena TBH..

Do you need Bungie Pro to watch rendered films online now? What the hell Bungie? I understand bandwidth is incredibly expensive, but if it's costing too much then putting a few google ads underneath wouldn't hurt. You should take away features just to make Bungie Pro more attractive?

I'm just going to drop this here, make what you want of it... Bungie signs publishing deal with Activision and then starts charging for watching rendered videos on Bungie.net. Coincidence?

+49 with the Needle Rifle :D Way better than the DMR.

I really, really, want to be good with the Nerfle but I just can't seem to rack up any kills with it other than targets that my teammates have softened up first.

I don't have the beta booted at the moment so I can't say where exactly, but I know that the status bar for rank progress does appear elsewhere besides when you earn credits after a game.

Ghaleon's critques

I gotta say, I agree with most of this. Though, I find the weapons to be satisfying to use after getting used to them (but Pistol could use a ammo increase, and DMR with a possible 4 shot kill). For movement speed, I agree that it's too slow, but after using Sprint nearly every game, it seems like Halo (but it still does need to be increased).

Melee does need to have more of a feedback, but I'm not sure I want the system Halo 3 had. I'm perfectly fine with it in Reach, but I want to know if I connect or not. And I do want to know where exactly I'm getting hit from.

But yeah, like Dax said, I'm mostly looking forward to Invasion and Generator Defense the most. Maybe then it'll be the Halo you've come to love. Plus, it is the Beta, and I hope that Bungie does listen to people and fixes this stuff. Or I'm being too hopeful.

Even with that situation present, the overall environment is still better than if PC was enabled. Not everyone is going to mute everyone else.

While the environment may be better, it happens more often than you would think (it wouldn't happen in nearly every situation obviously but it still occurs a lot).

Oh I never said you said that exactly, but by setting different rules (no PC) for Arena over something other playlist, it's sort of implied that it's more 'serious'. I view Arena, MLG etc. (in general) as simply more balanced, not more serious.

MagniHarvald said:

Well you know, neither of us can convince the other, so all we're left with is generalizations.

Rendered films are still free. Lots of films haven't been rendered yet. Same as for H3.

This happened today, LOL

Also, I took this today in theater. Not touched up at all. Explosions are amazing.

so i just online to check HBO and lo and behold, it was raining codes last night, just after we had another couple come over. oh well. the one thing that I hope with Bungie's new relationship with Activision is that they have more control over things like F&F codes etc. Seeing tens of thousands in the "F&F" is more than a little frustrating. /annoying rant

So, come on Monday when I have no time to play and will be watching Real Housewives of New Jersey instead... /second rant

When I do finally get some time to play, any tips for things that I should check out/do to maximize my time and enjoyment of the beta??

Very excited for Monday, i'm glad to see this games is looking good. Got Monday off and some blunts wrapped ready for some halo reach!:D

Aah ok. I didn't realise it wasn't a rendered video. Obviously you need Pro to watch the videos that haven't been rendered. Sorry Bungie. I don't deserve to be playing Reach.
*Goes off to play more Reach*

I don't think I like how the melee works on Reach.

All I have to do is choose Sprint, run towards a guy and melee him twice. He has no chance.

If you see it coming, you can melee twice right back and get a draw.

I think he's talking about people not wanting Party Chat in the Arena. Which blows my mind that people actually disagree with the idea of it.

You mean whip out the pistol and headshot him first, yeah :D

Ok GAF. I posted about that ammo 'glitch' yesterday and I have the clips of it. Can someone render these for me as I type up everything I can about them?

http://www.bungie.net/Stats/Reach/FileDetails.aspx?fid=16181

These clips are of the same game, same time, same everything EXCEPT where the replay is started. We were playing SWAT on Powerhouse.

In the clip where the glitch happens, the replay is started before I die (as if the game was going in real-time).

In the clip where the glitch does not happen, the replay is started at a "forward" point which occurs after my death. As you can see, this only happens after I have died (or as the game is being played in real-time) opposed to starting it after my death where the glitch does not happen.

How? If you want to play Free For All Arena then there should be no communication anyway. If you want to play Team Arena, you should be playing with people you know and communication should be kept between the two sides. What's not to understand? When did people miss the fact that Arena is the "competitive" side of Halo: Reach. What part of "competitive" wants any sane person to pair up with randoms and roll the dice and also wants the opposition to know your game plan?

Halo Reach runs at 1152 x 720 , which is of course a significant improvement over its predecessors (1152 x 640).

However the game seems to incorporate Temporal AA for its AA solution much similar to that of DMC4 & MGS4 for PS3.

The technique basically blends even and odd frames together to create some psuedo AA effect, at a cost of image clarity.

a0037809_4bdbdd098f400.jpg

In a static scene, TAA would create an AA quality similar to that of 2 x MSAA.

a0037809_4bdbdd2a129a0.jpg

Once you start moving, AA is lifted and aliasing is rather visible, yet the biggest issue with TAA is something else.

a0037809_4bdbddac2a2c5.jpg

That is the ghosting effect which considerably degrades the overall image quality.

TAA used in DMC4 & MGS4 had similar issues.

However DMC4 was a 60 fps game, so the hit in image quality was rather minimal.

(though it was clearly visible in direct comparison shots with the 360 version)

MGS4 used TAA only in static scenes, so ghosting effect was not exhibited.

The ghosting effect is somewhat severe in Halo Reach, kinda reminds me of the artifact seen in early LCD displays.

IMO, TAA does more harm than good, and it makes all the boost in res and increased details rather irrelevant.

Reach looks great and is a HUGE step up from Halo 3, and that's good enough for me.

If it's like Ranked play from H3, you can't hear the opponents before or during a game. As for randoms, I've had great games with randoms in H3, and the SS should help get a higher proportion of great games with randoms in Reach.

Of course, ideally it's better to play with buddies, but that's not always possible.

Oh, and we're only talking about Team Arena, if you've followed the discussion at all.

What are you arguing here? For or against Party Chat in the arena?

Teknoman said:
hmm now theres alot of people on with no mics.
I noticed that too. At first it seemed like every game had 6-8 people with mics. Now the majority are 2-4 with mics or people in Party Chat (which I don't have a problem with in anything non-Arena).

Yeah people with no mics can still hear (unless they've muted you or the game) call outs, so it's less of a problem. They can hear you ask them "XXX, could you get your mic in please?"
Anyways, I don't really have a problem with all this out of Arena, we'll see Monday what happens.

Oh, there's no ability to change the crosshair colour is there? In games where you can do that, I've always found it useful to change it to a bright pink. Can always see it that way. Might help for those having trouble.

Kenak said:

For. But also that Team Arena only be played with friends.

Ah, so no proxy chat. Okay then, that really nullify my point but on the same token, nullifies everyone saying against as well UNLESS it bothers you when you play with randoms and they are in a Party Chat. That is the price you pay for being so brave.

I, and some others, asked about HUD customization a while back.

Bungie said:
Truth: The same pre-alpha build that didn't feature final textures, geometry or decorators also included one of many earlier iterations of the HUD (which even today is still getting tweaked and refined). As of now it's no longer yellow and sources say it won't be returning, either.

Editor's Note: We did drop in on David Candland, Bungie's Lead UI designer earlier in the week to ask if HUD customization is something he's ever considered implementing and the answer is yes. The problem with the multi-colored approach, it turns out, is that it can often blend into the color palette on display in a given environment, rendering it effectively unreadable. Since those color palettes can change dramatically from space to space (and even from room to room), it's more problematic than just hooking up the technology and hoping for the best.

Seems like it won't happen, though I assume the final game will have darker/thicker HUD elements after all the negative feedback.

Yes, that is what we've all been saying so far :lol I don't think Bungie will restrict access to Arena to parties of 4 only.

You want Party Chat in a play list that expects exceptional team work -- something that counter acts the very concept of team work? Okay.

And a random team in the Arena =/= random team in Halo 3 Ranked Team Slayer. The whole idea of the Arena is grouping competitive players with similar skill levels and awareness together.

In an ideal world, everyone entering the Arena playlist would have three other friends that they are comfortable and play with regularly. In reality, the majority of people probably will be going into the play list solo.

well IMO bungie should ditch the temporal AA because the ghosting is hella annoying and it really does not help with IQ in motion.

i'm seriously baffled as to why they included TAA when it produces such an ugly effect.

Sometimes I wonder if Bungie even plays their own games :lol
