Halo: Reach Beta Thread

The ghosting effect is somewhat severe in Halo Reach, kinda reminds me of the artifact seen in early LCD displays.

IMO, TAA does more harm than good, and it makes all the boost in res and increased details rather irrelevant.
so true. i hope they fix that for the final version, but i dont think it will happen. i would rather have more jaggies and have a clearer picture to see the added detail.

So, I finally bought a new 60 GIG HDD after my last one totally crapped out on me. It really sucks because I lost all of my previous game saves, and I have to re-download everything... including the Halo Reach Beta. :(

Here's to waiting another 2 hours for it to finish downloading. :(

I switched HDDs a while back, and somehow I still had all of my game saves. Have you tried it out yet?

My friends wants to know if your render minutes add up if you don't have Bungie Pro. You know how each month you get 5, if you wait two months do you have 10? I've never not had Bungie Pro so I don't know the answer.

Sucks :( but remember that now we can backup stuff to a usb pen, always worth the investment when taking your hdd around a lot or if you have a ton of 100+ hour saves :P

i'm seriously baffled as to why they included TAA when it produces such an ugly effect.
it would like to know that as well. i hope there is a way to turn that filter off in the final version (is that even possible?).

I don't see the same problem with the needler. I've killed people with full shields using less than a full clip. Not sure what's happening to you guys. Got any videos? I'll take some next time I pick it up.

And I don't know why anyone would want to speak to randoms in a competitive playlist. Those few that aren't abusive or potty mouths almost never have anything useful to say. Even when you get call-outs, they're almost always wrong.

Forcing people out of party chat is a silly idea. If you want good communicative teammates, group up before you go in. Otherwise you're pretty much screwed, even if you force them to wear a mic and stay out of private chat.

Commendations wtf moment... I got 99 one game off of a classic slayer, and now I just got 12xx O_O!?!?!? That put me over 50% for a brand new rank!

Yeah, but there's not a singe game save on my box.

Oh well, all I really care about right now is playing the Beta, and at least I get to do that. :D

Needler fracking dominates, but you have to hit them when they're not expecting it or in narrow hallways, otherwise you can strafe through a whole clip and not even get your shields knocked down.

In the postgame report, how do you see how many of each medal you got? Also I can see something about unlocking items in the background but I can't figure out how to view that either.. And is there a way to turn off the auto party join between games?

Just because you get stuck with randoms doesnt mean you cant work as a team.

Played a couple of games with a Bungie employee.. cool!

Also.. lots of quitters today.. I don't understand why there's no severe punishment for quitting, like 10 min suspention from matchmaking or something like that. Would solve the problem.

I've caught up with some of this thread now. Hell, I guess I'm in the minority by saying I enjoy the game play more in Reach even on the two maps we have more so than what's found in H3.

And I was pretty impressed with how well the game looks in motion compared to H3. Next time you are in the theater go back and take a close look around at power house. Some pretty impressive details in most everything.

I can't believe some of you guys are getting so few magnum kills. You spawn with a pretty damn good gun. Cross map you can pepper people with it and even kill him if he's 1 shot. Long range you can put some solid shots if you're in cover and can zoom. Midrange might be when it's toughest to use. Chances are the guy you're fighting mid range is hitting you as well and so you can't really scope in. You also need to time your shots in that range. Close range though, I'm shooting that thing at a high rate. CQC, I'm usually trying to drop a guys shields with it. I can squeeze off 4 rounds of that thing pretty quick. As soon as I see those shields pop, I melee.

I'd be getting more with it if I didn't have such a hard time seeing it's aiming reticule and bloom.

Man, I finally got a key when urk (thank you my friend) posted like 100 codes in the begging thread.

Likes:
Gameplay. Abilities. Feels different but I like it. New animations. Especially the hammer one. Sound for the most part (like your ear ringing from an explosion). Visuals. Looks better than H3. Menu is slick.

Dislikes:
Still too many grenades. I almost feel 2 to start is too much since there are some scattered on the map. Remedy this by taking out the pickups of grenades, or starting out with none, or just an all around reduced number that you hold and are on the map.
Way too much grenade spamming.

How many times the community picked swordbase last night.

Some weapons seem to lack in audio punch. The sound itself is good. But it sounds as if Im listening to someone else shoot my gun in a distant battle. Maybe up the volume for the DMR and the pistol - not sure how to fix this.

Why can't this happen to ME?! I only get like 120 every game or so.

I think the poster has that the wrong way around.

I understand the whole, "it adds skill because the better player anticipates the bloom" argument, but anticipating/ controlling and reacting to bloom isnt exactly hard. It does severly limit the pistol, making it impossible to react to some situations, removing skill in a form. It also adds randomness to 1v1's if one of the players just spams the trigger. Simply because he can get lucky with the bloom and get quicker headshots than the guy controlling the bloom.

Its a very intentional design issue, and im not saying it should be removed, but saying it adds skill is like saying tapping your foot in rythm whilst playing Halo adds skill. :lol

Loving the beta. I'm having lot's of fun but I'm dying a lot :( I haven't played Halo 3 properly for a long while, so maybe I just need more practice. I'm getting a fair amount of kills a lot of the time, and even if I'm the best on my team for, say, getting flags, I always seem to be the one who has died the most. My k/d ratio is awful. But I play for fun (for now) so it isn't frustrating me too much.

Overall, I love the beta. I had to do some major adjusting through. My first game was just a mess, but I started to get the hang of the new loadouts. One thing that I am not used to is my "HALO ROUTINE", after dying is busted because If I want to chose a different load out, I have to stop my "sipping of drink" after every death. My life is hard.

The grenades are seriously dangerous now, don't know how I feel about that yet. The visual/sound effects for them is awesome though. Really enjoying all the sounds in the Beta.
Hated sword base, until I played headhunter there. It was INSANE.

Jetpacks are what I love the most. The feel, the movement. They put a smile on my face. I submit the following as proof:

http://www.bungie.net/Stats/Reach/FileDetails.aspx?fid=10326

Nobody wants to play Covie Slayer. :(

Observations from myself and a friend; Death is too quick. Not fun at all to be killed and not have any idea why or who did it. Health and shields need to be increased substantially.

Similar to the above, grenades are weird. I hate the silly little trail that comes off frags and generally their damage doesn't seem right.

Also, I'm more and more concerned that everything seems far too small-scale. Maybe it's because I'm coming from several weeks of heavy Bad Company 2 gaming, but having a whole game with just eight people in is too restricting. I understand that Halo has been 16 player technical max, 12 player de facto for a long time now, I just worry that other games have pushed this in the right direction toward 24 players and Reach will suffer greatly for it.

Generally I *am* having fun, but nowhere near as much as I was expecting to have. :(

Yes, it's the only thing I don't like.
It's headache after headache... :/

We should report this in the official forums, too.

416 kills with the Magnum, next closest gun is 126 away, and it's the DMR. I really hope Bungie doesn't listen to the majority of you, this game is so much better than Halo 3.

The DMR is an absolute machine when you are at the distance it's intended for, I can't wait for Invasion, it's going to really shine there I think.

Also, Covie slayer is garbage, Elites can take way too many hits, which has me wondering how a pack of Spartans are supposed to beat them in gun fights.

I agree with this post.

Let me tell you a story bout how...my life got flip-turned upside-down.

wait wrong topic. Anyways, I was playing some Covy Slayer, and I discovered this assassination, which I hadn't seen before :)

This was a air to ground assassination :D Pretty sweet. And here's the other ground to ground assassination, which I also hadn't seen!

And I rendered the clips of the assassinations. :D Here!

My favorite part about that air-to-ground assassination is the elite getting assassinated shakes his like "god please don't do this" as the guy assassinating him rears his arm back to kill him. SO AWESOME>

I agree. The reticule can be very difficult to see at times.

Also about the commendations. I think the way the system works is that every time you get an assist, headshot, multi-kill etc that gets added to your lifetime total. Everytime you hit a benchmark in your lifetime you'll see the fancy graphic pop up on screen for that category. That's when you get the big credits. There are also little symbol indicators to show your "level" It's kind of like in CoD how you unlock certain stuff by getting kills or headshots with a weapon. There doesn't seem to be a limit to it though. Or at least if there is one, it's pretty fucking far away.

edit: Those assassinations are bad ass!

edit 2: Simultaneous gun kill are in Halo 3. It's pretty damn rare when it happens. In Reach it happens way more often too. It's not even with the same gun either. I traded kills with a guy who had an AR and I was rocking a magnum. It was definitely a WTF moment.

I really don't understand why they kept simultaneous beatdowns and then added simultaneous gun kills. Seriously, I had a Shotgun while an opponent of mine had a Sniper and he no scoped me in the head while I shot him point blank and we both died, that is so fucking stupid.

Get rid of this simultaneous bullshit, Bungie.

When you dive/lunge as an Elite, does lunging into someone hurt them or no? People keep calling it a roll but there is no actual roll so I'm not sure.

I'm not sure if I understand this. If you both fire at the same time, and if your weapon is deadly enough to kill the other player in that last shot/shots, how else should it end? In your instance, who should've won?

Bolded for the absolute truth...

I feel we will finally be able to realize the full potential of this game once we get invasion, I'm also disapointed in the lack of any 2 flag style maps for the beta, this is really odd as it is what I believe to be one of the strongest gametypes of Halo and is also one of the best to play.

Agreed, double melee's were in to help counter latency problems, but unless the gunplay in Halo 3 was a big fat lie (:lol) theres no need for simultaneus shots. The window of oppurtunity needs to be shortened at the very least.

I really doubt both players shot eachother at the exact same time, it seems more like theres a window of a few frames after the first player shoots the second where it allows the second players actions to still count. If that makes sense? I dont think this window should exist, or it should be at the very least, shortened.

Starting to love the pistol. If it had like 2 more shots it would be perfect in my eyes, but probably unbalanced. Also the camo AA is absolutely useless nine times out of ten. Or might just be in idiots hands, but honestly people using it are like a free kill.

But yeah gotta echo the double melee sentiments, it's ridiculous and needs fixing. Even just removing the ridiculous lunge on the second swing (which for some reason is absent on the first hit!). Because of it Sprint is by far and away the best AA.

Didn't add. Was always there. Enjoy the netcode, it's awesome!

Also, the shield beeping needs to happen a little later than it does now. I get hit with one bullet and my shields start beeping so I panic and run for cover and while I'm at said cover, I look at my shields and they've barely been phased and the damn thing is beeping at me.

What the hell are you supposed to do against that Beam Rifle thing? I rarely beat anyone who has that.

Also it's just silly how easy it is to run into gaffers. So far today I've randomly been in matched with letters and vhfive, and those are just the names I recognise.

Before they patched halo 3 mp it was so unfair to the person who was not the host or lived in another country (due to matchmaking giving me, a UK player, an american lobby and host) thus I would lose so many battles and beatdowns even though I hit them on my screen in advance.

At least with double beatdowns I get a kill and so do they, all is fair because we both melee'd at the same time and ping was not a factor.

it was bugging me last night, and granted my TV seems to have developed a slightly ghosting problem, I was wondering why it was so bad. FIX THIS SHIT, BUNGIE.

The game looks great otherwise

Agreed. All these people talking about how great Covy Slayer is blow my mind.

It's terrible.

I just wish the DMR was a little bit better in close range, but that's what the magnum is for.

For covie slayer it sucks because the needle rifle is for medium to long range and the repeater is weak as shit and will overheat before a covie is dead, so everyone goes for the needle rifle. Plus all the gear in the level get's replaced with one of those two weapons only with a few frags in the mix.

If the maps had some human weapons around like the pistol and DMR it might help, energy weapons apart from the sniper and needle have always been good at removing shields but shit at actually killing something, without a bullet weapon the covenant soak up the pain like grubs in gears of war.
