Halo: Reach Beta Thread

Slayer Pro or w/e for FFA needs radar, and also needs all weapons but the DMR/BR removed. Guy was raping hard with the Hammer just now, kinda lame with no radar+hammer going around.

I agree with the radar thing, the other weapons should stay, but with the radar power weapons wont be as bad.

The actual animation and feel of using the beatdown is pretty flimsy compared to Halo 3. Even when you had nothing to hit in Halo 3, just hitting the air in front of you, you could tell the melee is powerful. It isn't like this in Reach. :/

Still have a lot of issues with the game, but I'm warming up to it some now. A lot of the stuff that is being complained about (reticule bloom, melees, grenades) doesn't bother me at all though :lol

I think the less I think of it as Halo the more I enjoy it; it really doesn't feel like it.

Warrant Officer Grade 2. Levelling up is surprisingly fun, even though I've bought all the gear I actually want. Suppose I'd better start saving for Oonsk.
I haven't paid attention to leveling up at all. When I have no idea how I earn the cR in the first place, it doesn't help me to stay interested. Bungie needs to explain how commendations work and what they mean at the end of the game. They need to be detailed like medals are in the post game carnage report.

Basically the more medals you get the better. When commendations pop it's because you've got a lot of one medal: headshots, assists, multikills, or a grab bag of different shit for 'Technician'. None of it is very transparent, but it's still satisfying when you get, like, 3K cR for one game.

I think it's falling short of what it could be in terms of hooking the player. We need more raw numbers, for starters.

Yeah, I agree with that. They need to explay what's worth what..
Also, I think that there should be a way to see the cR you earned in the last game in the Carnage Report.. I have the habit to check the computer everytime a game ends, and by that I didnt see how many cR I earned a lot of times.. I'm sure a lot of people are in the same positiion.

urk! Good sir do you know if you guys will ever explain how cR is given out?

It seems very buggy and inconsistent, but perhaps I am just missing something... Why is it in some games I do extremely well I end up with 150cR but other games when I do mediocre I get 1,300 cR.

Thanks!

You get a big hit for earning commendations. Right now, as people are very politely noting, it's a bit difficult to see what you're getting them for in game, but the payoff for earning them is moar credits.

Three helmets, with two upgrades each: Mark V , CQC, and Military Police. CQC is the best one, and I have a little camera on the side of it now to improve my hit box...

Thanks, well hopefully the Security helmets make it into the full game.

Commendations Page
So getting: Assists, Technician (could you clarify what that is?), Headshots, Multi-Kills, Killing Sprees, and Sticks are the most important things for earning cR?

Thank you for answering my questions.

L. Smith posted a list of all the medals that qualify for Technician, but basically think of it as everything that doesn't fall into the categories above. First Strike, Close Call, Headcase, etc.

I'm really loving this iteration of the sniper rifle. Wish there was one on Powerhouse.

Nice clip! I also wish there was a Sniper on Powerhouse, I cant wait for Invasion thats for sure. :D

The one thing that I noticed from rewatching that clip was that it was pretty hard to judge how much health you had after the first 2 guys. Maybe I just havent played enough to get a grip on things, but I literally didnt notice how low your shields were till my second viewing. If they could give you a greater level of feedback on this somehow Reach would feel so much more awesome.

Im complaining a lot, but its from a love standpoint its just positive criticism, the more people that complain about things like theatre bugs, the more likely your going to see the post amongst the sea of abuse right?

Can anyone from Bungie tell me if damage dealt is factored in any way into the commendation score. I felt like that was one of the great things that the GoW ranking system did, cause even if you didnt score kills, or even do the bulk of the damage, you were still getting points for every little bit you helped (which may have been the difference at the end of the day).

On a similar note, the stat-obsessed part of me kind of wishes that the +/- for the weapons went by the weapon that dealt the most damage to shields/health for the kill. 90% of my grenade and melee kills are basically just me finishing off opponents that I the AR did 70-80% of the damage against. Just feels inaccurate.

Ah well.

Ah must have missed that, sorry about that.

I still think cR is broken at the moment... Basically from what urk said Medals (essentially) are what gain you cR.

I have had over 50 medals in a game and ended up with almost no cR... Yet in some games I will get 10 medals and get over 1,300.

I apologize for not dropping this, it is just a major part of the game for me and I would love to fully understand it.

You get a small amount of cR for every medal, I think, but when the commendations pop (i.e. when you hit an unspecified milestone for medals, say 50 headshots) at the bottom of the screen, you get a major hit of cR after the game.

Holy shit XBOX Live sucks balls. I just hopped onto Halo 3 to play with one of my friends, and not only can we not create a party together, but it doesn't even let me join his game. $40 a year for shit -_-

I like it besides the Hammer. I'm glad there's no radar. The radar tells people exactly where the fuck you are now. Like, exactly.

It's not perfect. Sometimes people above me show up as plain red dots, as if they were right next to me.

Partial rage partial complaint post.

This happens all the time where I cannot play with 90% of my friends on COD MW2 or Halo (the two main games I play with friends). It says my NAT type is restricted or w/e, so I change the router settings, open ports, etc. Changes to Open. Still doesn't work.

So now I exited the beta, booted up Halo 3 to play with a friend, only to find out it doesn't work. As usual. Wouldn't be such a bitch if I didn't pay for the damn service -_-

Think of commendations as collections of medals. The 50 medal game is instrumental to that big credit hit you're getting later on.

To simplify, imaging a commendation for 10 headshots. If you snag nine headshots in a single game, you won't get the commendation. Get 1 in the next game, bam, raining credits.

It'll make more sense once the full UI treatment is in place.

Figured as much. Must suck to hear people complaining about something that is either already fixed (urk told me the Stockpile jerk teammate thing is dealt with) or planned to be improved.

Better now than later.

In the Beta:

  • Every multikill increments a Commendation
  • Every killing spree increments a Commendation
  • Every Assist increments a Commendation
  • Every headshot increments a Commendation
  • Every Grenade Stick increments a Commendation
  • Every kill you get using a Vehicle increments a Commendation
  • Technician's temp name is the aggregation of other 'cool shit' that doesn't fit within buckets.

When a Commendation is incremented, some small amount of Credits are awarded.
Each Commendation has five thresholds, at each threshold buckets of Credits are awarded.
After a certain point, Commendations no longer give you Credits per action.

In the shipping game:
There are a many more Commendations (some of them overall game-mode specific) so a headshot kill, with a sniper rifle on a Grunt will end up incrementing:
  • headshot
  • precision weapon
  • Infantry Kill

And then you'll see exactly how many Credits you got for that kill in first person while you're playing the game.

This is a problem I have. The only place that I've found to see what all the commendations are is Bungie.net, and there's no numerical milestones placed, just an ambiguous progress bar. I'd just like to see how close I am to the next one :(

The new Service Record wasn't ready for the beta. You will see what you seek this fall!

edit: Thanks for the clarification, Luke. I figured that was the case, I never doubt Bungie's ability to give me every stat I could ever ask for.

Love the bolded that will be SO satisfying!

Also will being the driver of the vehicle (which gets kills) count towards that vehicle kill commendation, or will that be its own commendation? Sort of like vehicle assists?

Hey Urk, are you going to change the veto 2.0 system so that it doesn't automatically have 7 votes on the first game type, because not everyone votes and I hate playing the same games over and over again.

For anyone in the know, will the code be sent around the same time you can play the beta from ODST? My friends are taking the day off and it would suck if I couldn't play with them. :lol
