Halo: Reach Beta Thread

I really hope this improved connection is a constant, as a UK player I'm really excited.
I was playing with a friend who lives in Japan for a few games with no loss of connection on any of our ends. I don't think that would of been possible on Halo 3's netcode. Jerk kept pulling host though!

So I get that this is probably a Firefight test, but if the input lag is still as bad as ODST, how will it get better in such a short amount of time?

lol@people on HaloWaypoints FB complaining about lag...

Hopefully this is an extreme stress test, this runs HORRIBLY for me.

wow, the update said not to worry if your connection shits out occasionally

Been banned twice this evening for accidental dropped connections. My router is just a bit too far away from the tv I guess and there's no way I can fix this at the moment.

so i didnt play for 4/5 days and lost my onyx

i feel ashamed to play arena now with that disgusting 4 next to my name. and generator defense is unplayable :(

what a terrible way to end the beta

That's happening all over the place. That sucks

I know it sucks, but has to happen.

Connection failures are very rare.. and as urk pointed out in last weeks BWU, if your connection drops often, you have to fix it with your ISP.. People quitting happens in 8 out of 10 matches I play, and I'm sure it happens to everybody else.. it ruins the game for everybody.

The new banhammer may be kinda severe, but it's the only way people will stop quitting.

Gluon Gunner from here got banned and he lagged out once. Doesn't seem fair

It's a little laggy for me, but it was pretty consistent, certainly nothing that was unplayable.
The more and more I play, the sword vs. shotgun dynamic seems really off. The sword stands no chance, it seems like the shotgun vs sword moments should end in both sides getting killled, but it seems that shooting the shotgun even late destroys the sword guy. The sword is really underpowered IMO. That melee block window seems to big, and the hammer lunge needs to return to the halo 3 distances or something.

what kinda ban is it? how long?

bungie took this bullshit too far. take away someones level and alot of credits. banning makes no sense

First game of Generator Defense I played the lag/delay was very noticeable but then I changed my search settings to "Good Connection" and my second game was awesome.

With both teams knowing what they are doing, this could really be an amazing gametype. Please keep it Bungie. :D

I'm fully behind the harshness of the system, but it's just a bit unfortunate I'm being punished for accidental drops. I'm gonna try moving my router, but I'll need to find a bigger ethernet cable for my non-wireless pc first.

Anyone going to be available for some Generator Defense/Network Test (of) Generator Defense (which is just really) Network Testing Firefight (and just 'cus) Invasion: Whatever the fuck: The Movie 1*??

*lame joke

Somebody here said (luke?) that they'll have more types of armor customization than just the head/shoulder/chest available in the beta.

Hopefully this means that the shoulders are separated purchases just to test purchases/give us the allusion of more things to buy during the beta. Don't expect it to be, though. :(

That's me. :lol I was banned yesterday for an actual quit. That probably had something to do with it, although I didn't quit any other games that day.

Temporary ban, usually between 20-30 minutes.

Heh, it's funny how much more fun i have with this game when i'm actually doing well :lol

I just had a match of SvE where i was on the spartan side and 2 of our team dropped out from the start, and we still won ( granted, they did have a guy who was afk >_> ) :D

Me and this other guy stuck together and we managed to fend them off pretty well.

It makes a nice change from how i've been playing recently. For the most part i have just been struggling with the reticle bloom and honestly not having all that much fun due to it. Although i have been playing mostly arena where it's more competitive, so that probably hasn't helped matters.

Only played the one match of GD so far, but first impressions were pretty good. Overlook is very nice looking also :)

:lol
Sorry, sometimes i get Gamertags and Usernames confused

I don't find the dynamic of shooting at the generators with no real feedback to be much fun. But I do see it finding a nice home in Invasion as a phase to give some distinction from 'holding this territory' over and over. I think I'd like the lockdown dynamic to be unlockable or at least sped up by having an elite running up to it and holding down the button for a few seconds (5 maybe?). Make that elite a sitting duck with the reward being a faster unlock time.

Generator Defense often feels like playing in molasses. The first game I played was super smooth once two people dropped, though.

Ditto. Every game was laggy with the last one being the very definition of unplayable. My weapons rarely so much as fired when I pulled the trigger and even something as simple as moving felt awful. This just compounded what's become a trend in the Reach Beta: stupid, stupid decisions. Why is the cool down so short? And why does it only take the press of a button? It should be a hold. Why can the Spartans spawn with the shotgun, giving them a massive advantage for one of the generators?

So the whole truth comes out ;)

BTW, I'm drinking up these bungie.net bitter tears over quitter bans like they came from Scott Tenerman's Tear ducts.

http://www.bungie.net/Forums/posts.aspx?postID=44193015

and I get the message,"Player has been banned from playing matchmaking on Xbox Live. You cannot start matchmaking with banned players in the lobby."

Can someone explain what is going on? And yes, I have quit multiple times in other gametypes, and as a general rule if I get killed by bs or by a teammates grenade in the first minute of an arena match, I quit that too.

Nice buddy way to ruin the game after a single kill.

http://www.bungie.net/Forums/posts.aspx?postID=44193211
I just got banned from playing matchmaking for quitting too much, wtf is this bs? I cant quit when I want? what kind of stupid game is this? When is the ban gonna be lifted? WTF happened to games where you wernt limited to stupid restriction like this?
Sombody Answer My QuestionS!!!!!!!!!

Their days are numbered, and that's so, so sweet.

http://www.bungie.net/Forums/posts.aspx?postID=44193459
i just quit my third game EVER after incredible lag and to my suprise i was banned! this is fantastic because mainly the fact is the only time i ever wuit playing the beta was due to lag. this is why people will stop playing your games and start playing other games where you don't get banned after 3 quits. i only have 2 more days to play the beta and i get banned, really? *face palm* -SSXserb

P.S. how long is the penalty?

I swear officer, I just had two beers with dinner!

I received a quit ban a couple of days ago. Ok, fine, I waited the 30 min penalty time and then I played more and didn't quit once afterward. I don't play for a day and then when I come back, I go into theater mode to watch some clips and then I get another warning for whatever reason. I wonder if it was a glitch, so I experimented and joined a game (no big loss. It was SWAT and I hate that gametype anyway)and quit and sure enough, after quitting one game. I get banned.

I played for the rest of the night with no quitting. I sign in today and there's another error message.

Anyone else getting an overabundance of these messages for no reason?

Ohh, it sounds like the system has a REALLY good reason to keep sending them.

Sorry for anyone who is banned for networking issues, or banned prematurely, that sucks, and I hope it get's ironed out for the final game.

Yea, I could see this being cool for Invasion, but as a stand alone gametype it's pretty lackluster. The gametype is broken as it is now, being able to spawn with a shotgun, plus spawn practically right next to Gen B makes it practically impossible for the Elites to win. The cooldown is literally like 3 seconds before you can lock it up again, and that lasts what, 30 seconds? So the Elites have to fend off the Spartans for 30 seconds in that area, and hope that none of them can do a suicide run to lock it up again. :lol Not to mention the Elites have absolutely no counter to the shotgun. Add in the lag (I know, NT, beta, etc.), and this turns out to be no fun at all.

I love the new mode and the graphics of the map; however, I will list some things that I don't like, tell me if it's just me or...

- "Dynamic" brightness: you play on Powerhouse (if that's the name of the first map) and you have good brightness all the match, then you play Generator Defense and you have this realistic light... when you are in a black spot your eyes are not used to bright spots and you see all things around you in a clear way, etc. but then when you get used to it it's all darker than the other maps, and it's not good for multiplayer, imo

short version: the fuck, this map is dark

- Lag: not so much of actual lag, more like input lag... when you play again in smaller modes the game feels more fluid even for things like moving the camera and/or switching weapons

any thoughts on these 2 points?

Do you get a message telling you why you're banned or anything? Seems like this would help curb quitting. If not, I imagine players will be all "Dudebro, WTF! Reach is broken. What a piece of ass game. LOL FAIL."

If it becomes part of Invasion, it would make a nice phase2 objective where shotguns/grenade launchers haven't yet been unlocked. I don't ever see a time where Invasion will be totally balanced, so I don't really care.. I'd just like to see them get close and figure out someway to promote vehicle combat in a 6vs6 mode that seems perfect for it.

I dont actually mind it being laggy because its a test, but I really hope its an extreme test and not the standard. I dislike the shotty spawn, but I guess this mode is less about gameplay and more about testing, still sucks though.

Love the map though, spent ages just going around in theatre trying to escape and get to the dish in the distance :lol

You receive a message stating that you have been quitting too often, and that if you quit again, you will not be able to play matchmaking for a while. Once banned, however, you do not have any indication as to how long the restriction lasts.

its funny to laugh at the quitting ban thing now but its really gonna push alot of people away from the game. if i have an hour to play with some friends, and i get banned because the game lagged out......now i cant play. instead of waiting half an hour to play halo again people are just gonna play another game

take away a few thousand credits, drop an arena rank, do something severe like that. but actually not letting people play is really dumb

Also another knock on the jump heights, I hate that a Spartan can't jump onto those wheat barrel thingies out front. The jump heights really are starting to piss me off.

I think its really smart, but I think enforcing it in a network stress test playlist is just rude.
I have no sympathy for a habitual quitter. It's not one or even two games that is doing it, its your typical behavior that is being punished.

Wow, I'm getting terrible input lag here. I even searched for Good Connection. Yeah, unplayable.

I'm on a killing spree right now, so I'm still getting kills, but the game is running like crap and shots are far different from where you actually pull the trigger. Totally screwed up. Thank god for Betas, hopefully this won't be like this at launch.

[edit] Last 2 games have ran decent, still not up to par with everything else, but at least it was playable.

And the guy who only has a couple of hours to play a week, but keeps getting shitty games because of quitters, ruining the time he has to play, again and again? He gets no voice in the argument.

Ehh, the system needs a bit of tuning, but it seems pretty accurate from the bitching I've heard so far. Dropping credits and rank won't do shit, halo 2 and 3 have shown the uselessness of ePeen penalties.

Yea, look at all of the people that quit WoW because of the 15 minute battleground ban, oh wait...

Such a nice looking map. That waterfall is pretty sweet looking. And now I know firsthand why its called Network Test 1 since you only get 1 frame per 10seconds in some games. :lol

This map has my hyped for co-op campaign and firefight!!!

I actually think your right, but if it stops people quitting out of my games thats fine by me! I am wary that if I ever move house or whatever that ide avoid playing Halo till I know if my connections good though.

Feels very pointless even saying at this point, but agreed =(

P.S. Stealing Assassination kills is AWESOME, was playing FFA, a friend went to assassinate someone, I shot his victim for the kill then killed my friend, muwhahaha. :lol

Man, the gametype is fun, but as per usual for the co-ops I get about half a second from when my controller says to do something and when it happens on screen. :/

But.. I was able to get on top? I do dislike the jump heights though.

whoo. Reach gets so easy if you can just keep from getting too excited and worked up :lol Just got my first arena running riot. DMR rules if you can keep calm and space out your shots

Well, the game looks pretty. Can't see myself playing too much of the gametype due to the lag and constant player drops. Woulda been awesome to have that gametype 4v4 in grab bag but then I suppose no one would bother jumping in the laggier playlist if that were the case.

I like the fact that the spartans are custom colored in the game mode. Don't see why both the spartans and elites couldn't be like that in the final game's Invasion and SvE.

Pro tip when defending your generator as a spartan. Don't throw grenades at the elites that are destroying your generator. You might accidentally blow up your own generator. :lol

Is your NAT open?
I mean, don't worry: it's ok (?) to have input lag in this mode, but it's not if you do CoOp in Halo 3 or ODST... and the way to avoid lag in those modes is that every single player has open NAT and not strict.
