Happy 30th to peak SNES platforming

I find it difficult to stick with, maybe I need to give it another go on the SNES mini....which doesn't get much usage from me.. certainly though it is the kind of game that showed the SNES still had it when it came to a visual showcase, and wouldn't look out of place at the time on the 32 bit consoles..
It's a bit more complicated and slower than Super Mario World. It's been a while but I remember some levels having a lot of exploration, and lots of them having some unique gimmick to them. It sure is different, but imo still a pretty cool platformer.

Hell I'm still at work but have spent all day thinking about replaying this one today. I blame you OP!

Meh, I thought it was mid.

Biggest false advertising scam in gaming history. It wasn't Super Mario World 2. They lied!
I understand why they did that in the west. The SNES was dying and a game named after Yoshi would never have been given a second look by most people.

Super Mario World is many leagues better, yeah. Huge disappointment coming from that.

At least nowadays you can hack the rom file to remove baby Mario, makes the game a bit more fun at least.

People need a romhack for this? It's like the romhack that removes the low heart sound from Zelda. Yeah it's annoying, but you don't HAVE to deal with it. There is another solution to keep it away, than a romhack...keep Link healthy. Your role in Yoshi is as a guardian keeping baby Mario safe, and the crying is an alarm you have screwed up in gameplay and need to fix it fast to avoid failure. The instant you touch Mario again to get him back the crying stops. You have a great deal of control over it so I don't see why it's so bad as if all over unskippable cutscenes lol.

Not super sure how I feel about the game these days. I've played it multiple times bhut nothing recently. I should try again.

The more I think about it. If you didn't play this when it was new, and are just checking out ROMs. It would be easy to dismiss it after playing a few levels, assuming you have a solid read on the whole game. When you have 5 SNES carts and nothing else to play, you have no choice but to play long enough for the game to reveal its depth and range of ideas. In that way it's kind of like SotN, a game I eagerly played anyway just because it was part of a franchise, but began to shock me with how much more it was than I expected.

Lovely game, and a showcase of what the SNES was able to do.

Transparencies, rotations, sprites scaling to hell and back and even a little bit of 3D here and there.

Ironically, this is one of the very few Mode 7 examples that doesn't abuse it to make a pseudo 3D perspective effect.

Top 10 best games I've ever played... And the first time I discovered the easter egg and it became known worldwide and I was on TV and in a video game magazine.

The SNES version is better. Better graphics, better visuals, better sound... Yoshi has the best sound, better environments. The GBA version is inferior and uses that Yoshi Story sound, which detracts significantly from the experience. The DS version... Best to forget about it.

Yup, i knew it was going to be Yoshi's Island. Best 2D platformer ever made IMO.

Edit: It's so funny to me how most people who don't like the game do so because of baby Mario's cry.

Imagine missing one of the best games ever because you don't like a sound effect that is supposed to be punishing on purpose. And the better you are at the game, the less you are going to hear it.

Their loss.

Whoever thought to make the chipmunk Yoshi's Story sounds the default ones from that point on... needs to get slapped once or twice for this.

That's right, my friend. I love Yoshi's sounds in Yoshi's Island... But I hate the Yoshi sounds they use in Yoshi's Story. Yoshi's Island also has some great songs.

Came out when I was in college and had kind of cooled off on these type of games. I picked it up used maybe 15 years ago or so, played to the first boss (I think) and never touched it again. Maybe I should give it a second chance.

I probably would have been more interested if they didn't go for the baby theme, and it had looked and felt more like a proper sequel to SMW. At the same time, I appreciate that they must have figured it was time to shake things up and try something different for a change. Coming off the intensity of the 8-bit NES domination, and the earlier SNES "upgrades" to a lot of the same games that were starting to feel a little bit stale (they were great games, but let's be honest the novelty was starting to wear thin) it was definitely time to change focus. Cue the shift from 2D to 3D, then..

I can't decide whether I like the Super Mario World soundtrack or Yoshi's Island soundtrack more.

Second or tie to N64 as the two best Nintendo consoles of all times. Lots of great games on the SNES and it was the console that perfected the non 3D graphic style..

My favorite 3 games on it were

Final Fantasy II - a.k.a Final Fantasy IV in other versions
A Link to the Past
Contra The Alien Wars Begins

It was a good game, but I think at the time it was overshadowed by the the saturn and PS1 dazzleing everybody with VF2, tekken ridge racer, sega rally, arcade perfect capcom ports on the saturn etc, and N64 just about to launch. I think time has been kind to it though because it still packs a visual charm that has aged well and its a classic nintendo game so gameplay wise its always worth a revisit. I have fond memories of it even if I was neck deep in my '32-bit and sega world arcades' era at the time this released. I never did actually finish the game though. maybe one day when I get a switch 2 ill get a digital download of it.

For me its gotta be:

Super castlevania 4
F zero
A link to the past

But im gonna throw, ceybernator, Axelay and super R-type as my 4th,5th and 6th.

What an amazing machine it was. the perfect companion to my sega megadrive. I think I still had the NES and masterystem kicking around back then too. I never really left 8 bit consoles alone even when I was all in on the 16-bit era. I still would go buy NES and master system games as they were dirt cheap in the early to mid 90s. good times.
