Not the Great Reveal/Revival I was hoping for...Rayman's back, ya'll...

Eh.. I've played this one so many times already. Not really interested in going through it again.

So how much for the collection? I haven't played classic Rayman games and my experienced with the earliest entries is limited, so I wouldn't mind changing that now.

Man... this was my childhood. I was never able to beat the game cause it was very difficult and i was just a little kid. I can't believe this is real. Gonna play tomorrow after literal decades.

This game was hard as balls. As a platformers fan, when I bought my PS1, I paused in front of the store shelf for long minutes, choosing between Rayman and Resident Evil.
In the end, I chose RE. One of the best decisions of my life. I tried Rayman later and boy, what were they thinking?

It's cool that they included several versions, but seriously, who is going to play the GBA version? Jaguar at least has some historical merits, and I understand that it has some differences worth going through it.

The rewind feature and the cheats are surely a welcome bonus. I rarely give up on this kind of game, but Rayman really broke me back in the day.

Was hoping for them to at least remaster the graphics a bit, but for $20 this seems like a good package.

Shut your ass, rayman was goated :messenger_blowing_kiss:

Harder than the average dick after entering the sidney sweiner topic but still goated.

Eh, it was also stiff like that average dick. A far cry from the smooth controls of the best Japanese platformers. The thing I hated the most was how terribly slow the game was. And the FOV was ridiculously narrow. Leap of faith, the video game.
Now Rayman Origins, that one was a GOAT that got criminally overlooked because the 2010s weren't the time for that kind of game.

Maybe i have nostalgia glasses but i only have good memories of that game, the music was otherwordly good.

I wanted an easy mode, infinite lives and continues don't really help much with the games difficulty. Meh, fans have put more effort into making the original more playable... I might grab it still, because it's Rayman and I kinda want to see a similar collection for 2 and all its ports and versions.

Not the biggest fan of the first game's actual gameplay, music is good, but I'm still gonna buy it to support Rayman and a chance of getting something similar for 2.

But... it's releasing today and there's still no store page? Lol. I'm so confused, where the hell is it, nothing on Steam

If it comes as a physical game on Switch I'll buy it. Certainly not the best Rayman, compared to the later ones it's pretty mediocre but it has a lot of charm and a lot of nostalgia tied to it, making it more of a collector's item than a must play game.

I think its solid. I bought it mainly for the Jaguar version which is novel to have.

Game is fun but levels become a chore from the music stage onward.

To be honest features like Rewind would also come with a ps1 Plus release. But you do get DOS and Jag versions here. And handheld ports i dont care for.

Ubisoft sent in a free PS5 review code yesterday, gonna download it tonight and start playing. Good shadow drop

LordCBH LordCBH also asked a similar question in another thread for State of Play the other day.

There are some differences in level design, balance, and character mobility that significantly affect the way some levels play. Here is a YouTube video from 2024 that explains the differences between the Jaguar, PlayStation, and Saturn versions:

Some of the biggest alterations include:

  • Slightly higher jump height on Jaguar
  • Sliding "ice" physics added to certain surfaces on PlayStation/Saturn
  • Differences in camera movement, which makes some jumps on the PlayStation/Saturn more difficult to gauge
  • Extra hazards added to PlayStation/Saturn
  • Different "bounceback" recovery

The rewind feature and the cheats are surely a welcome bonus. I rarely give up on this kind of game, but Rayman really broke me back in the day.

I started off with the Jaguar version "back in the day", and was able to get 100% completion on that version. I got the PlayStation version later, but only got about a quarter of the way through it before the difficulty spike became unbearable.

Having the abilities to save anywhere and rewind gameplay should make the game much more manageable. It sure beats having to repeatedly trudge through 10 minutes of an already very difficult section, just to get clobbered at the extremely difficult section.

Try the Jaguar version, if you get the opportunity. It is still a very challenging game, but not as punishing as the PlayStation version.

They somehow managed to fuck this up by replacing the original's music.

From what I've read elsewhere, Ubisoft doesn't own the rights to the original music. If that's true, then the decision might have been made out of necessity rather than choice.

Hello. This is a 30-second video taken from the Switch's capture button.

The bug is: The Jaguar and MS-DOS versions of Rayman literally do not save at all. Whenever you touch a save point in those versions, it says "game saved", however it does not actually write anything to memory at all. All it does is set the current emulator savestate to the moment you touched the save point. This is a significant bug because, if you ever press "Reset Game", then you can say goodbye to all of your progress in an instant. Nothing was ever saved, so you are met with an empty file select menu. (and the emulator savestate gets set to the blank file select menu for good measure)

I send this video to Ubisoft customer support and received this response:

Hello,

Thank you for reaching us back.

We appreciate that you have sent us video showing the issue where when you reset the game, your progression got deleted within the process. We apologize for the inconvenience that was caused.

Within this issue, we would like to inform you that, we have now stopped post-launch support on this game, as our development team has moved on to other projects. We have no further updates planned for this title, so this issue will most likely remain in the game.

We understand that this is not the outcome that you are looking for. We hope you will still be able to enjoy your time playing and apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.

Since there is no further action, we are going to close this ticket. Kindly note if you have encountered any other difficulties in the future with a different issue, please don't hesitate to contact us - by re-opening this ticket or open a new ticket.

Best regards, Ubisoft Support

Amazing.
Typical behavior - instead paying the original composer (or extending licensed music) it's cheaper to replace the ost with some new generic one. And call it a modernized soundtrack so people won't have any room to complain.

Well, that's terrible.

Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration (which was also developed by Digital Eclipse) has a similar issue with the Jaguar games in the collection. They don't emulate the non-volatile memory in the cartridge, so you must use the emulator's save state feature if you want to retain your progress and high scores.

For what it's worth, in the Reddit thread you quoted, someone claiming to be from Ubisoft said that support has not ended. Let's hope that's true, and that they go back and patch the game.

Can confirm.

I didn't know anything about any differences. I played PSX until a bit into blue mountain, and then started the Jaguar version.

The Jag version is 100% superior. I felt it starts harder, the enemies and bosses seem to be a bit faster and less passive. But its nothing major.

However, the Band Land levels are a dealbreaker. The icy slopes are gone, and they RUIN these levels. Esp. in combination with the trumpet jumps. From this moment on I was Team Jag. I also couldn't beat those mantis enemies on PSX, but on Jag they are easier to cheese with low hits.

TL;DR Rayman Jaguar is actually fun. Its likely the best version. And not to mention on original hardware it would've had no load times as opposed to PSX/Saturn.

I can also dig the CRT filter and borders. It changes the look of your TV.

Personally I always thought that first game was complete shit. Never did the sequels but I imagine they're more or less the same just more infuriating.

I didn't really appreciate the series until Origins.

Absolute same. Truly never got the affection for it when I played it, that game is absolute trash. Rayman Legends and Origins may be some of the best platformers of all time, so I'm glad the franchise exists, but goddamn that initial game sucks.

Ubisoft's attempts at a big celebration didn't quite go to plan as the game currently has a 'Mixed' rating on Steam with only 53% positive reviews at the time of writing, with a big portion of those complaints aimed at the game's all new soundtrack composed by Rayman Origins and Legends' Christophe Héral. As far as I can tell, the issue isn't that the new music is outright bad – it's just that it doesn't fit the vibes of the original, if the countless Reddit and Discord threads are any indication.

"Really good ports of these games," one players writes, before adding that "without the option to switch to the original soundtrack," it "kinda brings it down a lot for me."

Ubisoft has actually been responding to various posts about the renewed OST in its Discord channel, with one employee acknowledging players' "feelings about how the arranged soundtrack doesn't recapture the vibe for you and how all the changes feel," adding that the company appreciates "the suggestion of adding an option to have the old music again." The post continues to say that "the proper team will have a look at this."

Rayman 2 is not even remotely similar to Rayman lol.

Rayman 2 is probably the best. And I expect a collection of this game to feature at least the DC ver.

I like Rayman 1 though. But its also nostalgia playing tricks. Its a decent and unfair 90's platformer that requires your patience and its a far cry from the likes of Yoshi's Island and DKC2 which released in the same window. But Rayman's graphics and animations especially hold up still.

Its addicting enough, that we continue though. We are in Picture City. Rewind is kind of eh ish (worse than in PS classics), but it saves you a lot of unfair deaths or redoing bosses. Lots of games from then needed to ramp up the difficulty, while the first stages were fun to explore and challenging enough I feel.

I am confused, does it also include the sega Saturn version? It was different from the playstation one, and they make it look like they are the same.

Also I want Rayman 2 remake

Yes, the video refers to the PlayStation and Saturn versions collectively as the "CD versions", in comparison to the Jaguar version which was on cartridge.

The PlayStation and Saturn versions are very similar to each other, with only a few subtle differences between them. The Jaguar version has much more pronounced differences.
