I met a lot of Australians at a youth hostel not long ago, and I got to say...you're all awesome. One or two of the girls were a bit "loud" for my liking, but still alright. Generally I was just amazed at how cool aussies are. Or at least the ones who travel.
i agree, too much Peter Andre in this thread.Instigator said:I think the absense of Kylie is infinitely more suspect.

Edward Barton? I didn't google btw.tracky_dacks said:hell I didn't even know who our first Prime Minister was till Year 7 or 8, yet by then I knew George Washington was the first US President. Who's our First Lady? Beats me, but I've seen her on the telly a couple of times.
Scrow said:well... i could date Australia's beginnings from the original human inhabitants. I think one of the oldest remains of an aboriginie they've found is 60-70,000 years old.

Ill Saint said:Call me cynical (ok, I am cynical), but I don't see what there is to celebrate. The colonising of an indigenous peoples land and the subsequent raping of their culture and lives? celebrate good times, c'mon?
If you say so... I find Patriotism in general baffling, and having lived with the indigenous people for 6 months, I'm still uneasy about it. Seems mostly like an excuse to have a day off, and get on the piss.Crow said:Celebrating Federation of States and all that makes Australia, Australia. Every country has a dark past, but that's not what we are celebrating.

Sure. But does this make it excusable? The majority of Australias indigenous people are ravaged by the legacy of alcohol 200+ years on, and continue to live like shit. We've pissed all over them. Their bitterness is staggering, and rightfully so... I don't think they have a whole lot to celebrate today.Inumaru said:That's kind of the way history works. When one civilization invades and conquers another historically, they either kill the vanquished to keep them from mating with their own, or absorb them (sometimes killing just the men and mating with the women). In very few cases have conquered people been allowed to keep their cultural identities as it's generally detrimental (for obvious reasons) to the stability of the new nation-state.
Sucks, but so does war and conquering and all that bad stuff.

That's Australianism and that's what we're celebrating. Finding any excuse possible to have the day off and get on the piss. Who in Australia under 50 gives a shit about the Queen? Nobody, but we'll still take the day off to celebrate her birthday.Ill Saint said:Seems mostly like an excuse to have a day off, and get on the piss.

Anyway, I don't mean to bring this thread on a downer. Just some food for thought for any Aussies visiting.
Yeah, I am Australian. And you sure got worked up didn't you?Optimistic said:Are you American? if so stop acting so high and mighty. I'm sure your native Americans really appreciated almost being wiped out...and those African Americans? Being chained up and picking cotton, shit, WHAT FUN! In conclusion, get out of this thread.
For the record, I don't give a shit about Australia Day or the reasoning behind most public holidays. However I do enjoy the holiday itself, and I detest hypocrites who come into threads and have a whinge, *cough*Ill Saint*cough*.
+1 respect to DTM. Love Smirnoff Blacks. Very nasty when you drink with Tooheys New/Extra Dry though, with a dash of West Coast Coolers to wash that vodka taste down.Do The Mario said:Yeah some Americans guys and girls I took night clubbing reckoned I was gay for drinking Smirnoff Blacks.
