Happy Meals are dropping toys for books (for a while)

If you're looking to score a mini Hello Kitty or Star Wars figurine with your kid's burger at McDonald's, then you're out of luck. The fast-food chain is removing toys from its Happy Meals—at least for the next few weeks.

Now through February 15, Happy Meals will include a book instead of a plastic, pop culture-driven toy. McDonald's plans to distribute more than 17 million children's books to kids who chow down on their pint-size fries during this time.

There are four top titles in the mix, including Paddington, Pete the Cat, Clark the Shark Takes Heart, and Happy Valentine's Day, Mouse. Each book has been specially made to fit inside the trademark Happy Meal box, with the petite paperbacks measuring about 4 inches by 5 inches. The brand is even offering Spanish-language versions at some locations.

Blinded by the luminous glory that is David Bowie's physical manifestation.
I'm completely fine with this. Depending on the quality of the book and size of the book, it should be a good "early literacy" move. Libraries have been doing this with the United Way and the like in regards to baby kits, but if low-income families can get a "free" book with their fast food purchases (as it's common for low-income to go fast-food over supermarkets) this means they're helping their kid in the long-run provided they actually help the child read/read together.

It's a noble strategy, but I'm not sure how effective it'll be.

I noticed this last time I went on the weekend - which is probably the first time I've been to McDonald's in over a year.

Got a Pete the Cat Valentine's book and Pattington Bear. They're obviously dinky books, but they're printed well enough. My daughters liked them - didn't hurt that the Valentine books was one of a few Pete the Cat books they haven't read.

They also included some Valentine's cards, stickers and a little pop-up card.

Better than a shitty toy, i'd say.

People are actually saying this is lame? This is a great move by McDonalds. I'd rather my future kid to have a new book to read than some plastic toy that I'll probably step on later in the week.

If I had gotten a book from a happy meal when I was a kid I probably would of been pissed. The adult me thinks that's great though.

lame. on the rare occasion i take my kids there i expect cheap plastic crap for them to play with that afternoon.

Yep I feel the same. I take my kids there once a month and think it's pretty shitty they throw in apples. I always tell them to substitute the apples for extra fries. Do people seriously take their kids there that often they had to make happy meals some what healthy?

I probably would have skipped this if I was a kid. I usually didn't ask my parents for a Happy meal during the times when they had toys I didn't like.

My kid actually likes books better then a toy where the eyes light up, but hes still young, I'm sure this will change when he hits 5 or 6.

My wife and I were just talking about this. Her "moms" boards are losing their shit over this, which seems crazy to me. My daughter is 2 /12 and she loves books. This appeals to her even more than some shitty toy. I read her Paddington just the other day and she couldn't get enough. I think it's a wonderful idea.

You have no idea who you are talking to but thanks for the parenting advice Hemingway.

I don't think it's a controversial thing to say that teaching your kids to love reading is a good thing for them , quite the opposite really. Being well read and enjoying the written word are a gift in of itself, no need to get insulted.

Also thanks for the Hemingway compliment though I have nowhere near his skill!

Fun fact: If you Google the title of this book, Google gives you a message to seek help and I'm pretty sure I'm on some sort of list since I looked it up a couple months back.

I just googled the it to get that picture and got no such message. Its a literary classic adapted into a well known film by Stanly Kubrick not sure why it would get anyone on a list worth worrying about in 2016.

Because "lolita" is a go-to term in child pornography.

I realize that but I don't think Google is the place most child porn perverts are going to use to find their filth.

Just glancing at the search results is that there are tons of links to both the movie and novel without specifying either. These are followed by several businesses that use the word in their name.

Its got some ugly connotations but its not unheard of in totally normal everyday language.

Interesting. I just did it again and didn't get anything. Maybe 2016 is truly the key magic year as when I searched it before it was the far flung past of 2015.
