Has anyone had tubes placed in ear drums (myringotomy)?

I am almost sure nobody can answer this, but I have no other place to ask, I don't know any ENT or health forums. But I am freaked out at the fact that I can't hear much bass, I can hear treble things just fine but I can't hear much bass. Is this... normal? I suppose having a tube in the eardrum with a hole for ventilation must account for something..

actually gaf's own lambtron has had chronic ear problems in the past - i believe he's had ear tubes at least once

I had tubes twice as as child because of chronic ear aches due to fluid build up. Then in college I had an ear infection that made my right ear deaf for a week. I now have some permanent high-frequency hearing loss in that ear :(

I had tubes in my ears when I was a kid. I guess my ears are in pretty bad shape, but I don't have much hearing loss or anything. My high-frequency isn't great, but my hearing is still within the average.

edit: And then there was this time in the 3rd grade, I think, when we were doing a fire drill. I don't know if you're familiar with exactly how these things work, but I guess in case of a fire you need to be deafened. They set off these alarms that are way too high and loud, and put them on the walls right next to where you're walking out of the building. So it's not that bad, until you walk a foot away from it. So after passing about 5 of these things and getting to the playground to wait around for 15 minutes, my ears are really starting to hurt. I was sort of a loser as a kid, so I wasn't exactly the center of attention or anything, so nobody pointed it out to me. But on the way walking back to class I noticed that my neck felt sort of warm, and looked over at my shoulder. I had these huge streams of blood running down my neck onto my shoulders. I don't know if that's related to the tubes or anything, but it really sucked, let me tell you. On top of that like a week before that the teacher wouldn't let me go to the bathroom because she was having problems getting the kids to come back. So after about an hour of not letting me go to the bathroom I crapped my pants.

I'm sorry to hear that people have suffered high frequency hearing loss. I'm very worried because I can't hear much low frequency (bass) at all.. I hope that it's just because there's a friggin hole in my ear drums.

From discussions I have had, getting tubes for your ears is mostly done to younger kids to correct hearing from a young age. I had em'..I had a lisp because I heard things wrong I think.

Everything is a' otay now. :D

I had numerous sets of tubes in my ears as a child, due to frequent earaches. One thing to keep in mind is when you're fitted with tubes you have to avoid immersing your head in water, so you have to be extremely careful swimming.

When I finally had my last tubes removed the surgeon slipped and cut my ear drum. So I had to go back in for ear drum repair surgery shortly after. They had to make an incision behind my ear and open it "like a door" to operate on the ear drum. I now have some slight scarring behind that ear, but it's not noticible unless you're really looking for it.

During my post-surgery checkup at the ear specialist the doctor cauterised the ear drum. It actually didn't hurt all that much.

So yeah, you may not want to go through any unneccessary surgery. It's possible that you may be eligible for a specialized hearing aid that helps with troubling frequencies?

I don't really know too much on the subject, but I do know that hearing aids don't have to be the huge noticable clunkers that they used to have. They're actually discreet and 100% concealable now.

I had lots of tubes as a child, i don't know how they affected my hearing, but they did keep me from having so many earaches. My hearing now is pretty terrible. They're supposed to remove the tubes after a year if they haven't fallen out already. My doctors neglected to realize this leaving my eardrum all fucked up and with a hole in it. This later lead to scar tissue, multiple ruptures due to too much fluid behind the ear, and an excessive drainage of black-ish blood/wax mixture.

I don't know if the tube would help. Talk very seriously to your doctor, because your ears really can't ever be repaired to 100%. It's not worth the risk, seriously. I so desperately wish I could hear well again, and it bothers me that if I'd just taken the time to put in earplugs in the pool, and went in for more regular checkups that I wouldn't be in the boat I'm in now.

I had tubes once, too. Don't remember shit about them, except I was happy once they were out.

Sorry. Have you tried WebMD.com yet? I usually can find most of my medical info there.

I think I forgot to clarify that this is after I have had the tubes in. I have the tubes in right now as we speak, both ears. I have had them in since Tuesday, they are supposed to be taken out along with my adenoids.

It is only after I have the tubes in that I have these low frequency (bass) hearing problems. I can hear high frequency (treble) just fine (in fact better than I have ever heard high frequency in a long time), it just freaks me out that I can't hear bass. I guess the only thing that makes this seem normal is that it's not just one ear, it's both, as I have had it done in both. I don't know the resemblance between the ear drum and an actual drum but I know that with an actual drum if there is a hole in it, it takes out the "oomph", the percussiveness. Perhaps I'm being overly optimistic and not realistic.

On a somewhat related note, I've always heard high pitched tones...sometimes they go away...sometimes they're there. It's not really a ringing. Anyone else have this too?

i've had it when i was good. i went deaf on both ears for 1 week b4 i told anyone. my hearing is all right, not the best in the world. and for the above post, i do hear those high-pitched noises every a couple of months.

I had tubes a couple of times as a kids. I remember having 6+ surgeries before I was 10. Hell, one time I remember playing with a barrel of monkeys then having to count backwards from 100 while Barney was on the TV and the sweet scent of strawberry filled my nostrils.
