Has anyone heard of the band Kolm? (they sound identical to Tool)

The algorithm in Apple Music served this up to me this morning. The Tool sound is unmistakable. I had to confirm it wasn't another side project for Maynard.

Eat your heart out Greta Van Fleet.

Tell me that doesn't sound like Tool jamming over the Donkey Kong Country Returns OST... wtf lol

I feel like Greta Van Fleet worked in large part due to how long it had been since Zeppelin was active. There was a market for that sound, especially among older rock fans who felt like that sound had been missing from rock for decades.

Tool's last album was only 6 years ago. I could easily see hardcore Tool fans turning against this band as copycats.

Edit: I just looked at the date on this track and it looks like the only music they ever dropped was back in 2018. Went looking to see if they're still active. They still have an active social media presence and play local gigs in LA, but they seem to have had a revolving door of members (just recently changed their bassist), and have more merch than music.

Looks like they're working on a second album as of last summer.

They also did a collab with Justin lol

Don't get me wrong, I found the tracks off Umbra to be enjoyable. But perhaps flying a bit too close to the sun in terms of being Tool-like, even going so far as to blatantly copy the Alex Grey art style for their album art. I hope they're able to create something prog-rock that also distinguishes themselves from just being a "band that sounds like Tool".

Oh I agree. Some parts sound like straight up plagiarism. If I cared enough I'd put together a side to side comparison. If they were aping Smashing Pumpkins this hard Billy Corgan would sue them into oblivion.

"We have Tool at home"

*tool at home*

I typically prefer the "tool at home" kinda bands tho 🤣

like Rishloo is another one that people compare to Tool all the time, and to me Rishloo wipes the floor with Tool.

definitely gonna give Kolm a listen later

I'm one of those obnoxious Tool fanboys, and I know it. I just can't get into any of the bands they've inspired. Listening to them feels like I'm cheating on Tool.

(I know - douche alert)

I had to check the date of the Youtube to see if this wasn't AI generated ...

My favorite Tool inspired band is Karnivool. Unfortunately they only released three albums in the past 20 years.

Not bad. Singer gives me Brandon Boyd vibes.

I just found out that Karnivool released a new single as a teaser for their upcoming fourth album, the follow-up to Assymetry (2013).

Kolm probably does great Tool covers. The singer sounded pitchy/atonal in a way that seemed to mimic Maynard James Keenan, except he hangs out on the off-notes in a dissonant way MJK doesn't.

BTW, the best Tool "rip-off band" in terms of distilling down Tool's riffs into pure catchiness is Chevelle. Like my favorite Tool songs are where they deliver heavy, full-steam-ahead proto-nu metal riffs, but in Tool songs, they only hit those for like 10 seconds then move on. Chevelle builds whole songs around them and sustains it. Not to mention Chevelle's singer wouldn't be singing like he does if not for Tool.

You know, I never got into Chevelle. I knew their big radio hits but I never felt the urge to explore their stuff. Always thought of them as a generic post-grunge rock band like Breaking Benjamin. I'll listen to one their albums tonight when I play a game.

Makes sense, because Breaking Benjamin is dope, too lol. Guessing I'm just a little younger than you because those were the type of guys making music when I first got into music.

Ngl, I love a few of Chevelle's songs, but there isn't one album that I'd call all bangers. Sci-fi Crimes probably comes closest. A few of my favorite songs of theirs:
"Shameful Metaphors"--probably my favorite. Love that chorus.
"Roswell's Spell"
"Well Enough Alone"
"Hats off to the bull"
"Send the pain below"
"Mia"

Chevelle did the best Tool impression for their first album Point # 1. Still their best work in my opinion.

Loved this one
