How Did You 'Get Into' Your Favourite Band?

Windle Poons

Made a crappy phPBB forum once ... once.
Couple of ones for me...

Genesis - July 1987 - my sister telling me if I wanted to 'listen to something different' to catch it on Radio One (all big concerts were on the radio in those days) and just being totally blown away by them. Phil Collins gets a lot of stick and I don't know why because Genesis are / were top tier.

Pink Floyd - my friend used to give me a lift to work and he had their Pulse CD on repeat and it just grew and grew on me.

What say you?

They're not my top band, but they're one I really like: Three Days Grace. Went to Florida in August 2005 on a family holiday. My dad bought me a PSP with a game, some movies, and the PSP also came with a sorta demo disc. It had the song 'Home' on it by Three Days Grace and after hearing that I've listened to them ever since.

Not necessarily my fav bands of all time, but in the late 80s everyone in school was listening to U2, INXS, Pet Shop Boys and New Order. So I jumped on. Since then, out of them I only listen to old school U2. Rest I bailed though occasionally I might do a YT of True Faith or Domino Dancing.

Subordinate/friend heard me blasting Arch Enemy from my phone at work (by accident, ear buds weren't connecting properly) some years ago, recommended Orbit Culture as an up-and-coming band. Been listening to them constantly since. Quite the fortunate accident that, good chance I wouldn't have heard of them otherwise.

When I was 10, my friends brother put on some music by a new up and coming band he'd heard about. The opening of the first song blew me away and, even though my tastes in music have changed over the years, I've been a fan ever since and it's still one of my favorites albums. Welcome to the jungle burned itself into brain and appetite for destruction will always be one of my desert islands discs.

My favourite though, is Brandi Carlile and I got into her after I got given an old hard drive and the previous owner forgot to wipe it. Among other stuff there was a folder of MP3s, including her debut album. I gave it a listen and really enjoyed it so ended up getting buying every album since on vinyl.

A gift from my big cousin, the Iron Maiden Live After Death live album

a revelation :) , after that i jumped between different and extreme sides too

I don't have a specific 'favorite band' but I got into my musical style in high school. I made some friends, one of them had an older brother in a ska/punk band, and I went to one of their shows with everyone.

The rest was history. I branched out from there to other genres, but that's what set my out on my tastes. Even ended up forming 2 bands of my own and enjoyed playing shows, it was a lot of fun.

This was the song that my friend's brother's band covered, that really got me into it. Kinda simple but I hadn't experienced anything like it at the time. The energy, the horns, fast tempos, etc.

When I was 9 years old I went shopping with my aunt and older cousin.

I bought myself the Star Wars soundtrack and my cousin got the new KISS album Love Gun.

A week later he let me borrow it and my ears fell in love 😁

My dad was a really good self-taught guitarist and introduced me to Hendrix and SRV. My buddy Lakeith turned me onto DMX and Wu-Tang. Tool and RATM are just products of my time I guess.
