Has GAF already healed to pre-exodus state?

I ask because I tried to find a thread from last week thinking it was gonna be easy on second page or so, then I realized I was already on Page 3 and still seeing posts with "Today" last response... Hell I opted to just create a thread because I had to go till page 10 and didn't find the one I was looking for.

This reminds me of the times when you refreshed and already had the thread you were participating already vanished from first top spots, I haven't seen this level of activity for a while and I'm not sure if this we got back to old times levels of activity, or how far we're from it.

What do you think GAF?

GAF used to get 50,000 posts per day at peak. But a lot of it was low effort reaction posting since we did not have likes or reactions back then.

In terms of traffic we get a lot of eyeballs and are quite popular these days.

That's quite a lot more than I ever expected...

Infinitely better community today

Man plaster every inch with ads for everything possible - porn, soda, winky medicine - everything.

You know when someone sends you a link on MSN and you do control C and then control V? Well imagine how many times people have gone to the address bar in IE or Firefox and missed a key and ended up with just V. Then the browser defaults it to .com

So use the money to then buy V.com and then also plaster that with ads everywhere. Each add can be 4x4 pixel, you'll make your money back and then some.

I appreciate the entrepreneurial spirit, Ragnarok!

I think the idea of being "healed" might be the wrong way to frame it. The exodus happened nearly ten years ago, and the internet is a very different place now. We shouldn't expect, or even want, things to snap back to how they used to be. So how it was before doesn't always have to be the reference point. As the recent update shows, GAF continues to evolve, so we don't need to keep looking back.

There's a nice level of activity here these days. It's enough to cover a wide variety of topics and perspectives. But not so much that it feels like a constant churn where your posts get lost. It feels like a community, rather than just all of us shouting into a maelstrom.

As mentioned earlier, the reactions have been a great addition. They let us engage with posts in a way that doesn't just result in a flood of "This"-type comments, which we used to see a lot of.

People are generally pretty chill and easy-going too.

I don't think so, I mean the cancer was cut out, but a lot of good posters went with it; OTs used to be super busy, like I literally made several OTs for Street Fighter 5, now unless it something really big, activity in OTs dies down pretty quickly IMO.

GAF at peak activity was a wave of posters wanting to be noticed for posting a lot and saying very little. Live announcement threads would move so fast it was hard to really tell what was going on.

In terms of quality of content, this is the best that GAF has ever been in my memory

Also in terms of being able to speak freely, this is also the best that GAF has ever been. Before the Purple Schism, you had to walk on eggshells and if you said the wrong thing your ass was grass

I would hope we had made it to the promised land and still not be help captive by the Egyptians pre-exodus.

Speaking of gaming side activity; It seems like discussions over there have become more mature and nuanced these days. Maybe its just me, but folks at large also seem to be more well-adjusted too. We still obviously have our differing preference and biases.

Honestly, I think the average experienced GAFfer delivers some insightful and valueable views on games. The Khazan thread reads like an on-going peer review with folks contributing contrasting and thoughtful views on various aspects. It contains way more thorough analysis/"review" of the game than what the average gaming media outlet have done in a long time.

The best thing to happen to GAF was for a bunch of mentally ill individuals to leave and create their own space where everyone else can safely ignore them!

Pre-exodus, I did enjoy reading the personal exploits of wackjobs, but I think the community is now stronger than before

This is one of the few sites that fights madness with free speech and laughter in the gaming space. I might not engage in all the drama, as most high profile releases don't interest me that much.

But it's fucking refreshing to see shit being thrown back and forth, doomers and fanboys duking it out, the epic meltdowns from people who can't handle the chaos....and all the glorious memes/gifs. We all have shit takes from time to time that deserved to be clowned upon, it's part of being human.

now excuse me while I hug some more trees 😅

The community took a shaking but at the same time Gaf became more inclusive, allowing lurkers like me with a basic email to join.

Definitely cant be mad about that.
