Has MS given up on BC already?

Chiggs said:
Why? So you can bitch about that in one of several million "Microsoft Lied about BC!" threads that would undoubtedly appear within minutes of Microsoft "giving up".

Glad we see eye to eye, Chiggs. :)

I just started playing Prince of Persia: Sands of Time over again and it runs perfectly. There was slowdown in the beginning but I haven't had any at all since then, which makes me believe the slight framerate issues in the open city might have been present on the Xbox as well.

I didn't own an original Xbox, so this shitty BC really does bother me. Half of the reason I bought a 360 was to play KOTOR, Halo and Call of Cthulu. I'm stuck with whatever mediocre attempts they make to improve the system.

I find it funny when people keep saying "people won't care about BC in a year or two". Thing is, Xbox games will still look good 5 years from now, they don't age anywhere near as bad as PS1 and N64 stuff did.

Why would I want to keep that huge Xbox beast around when I should be able to play them all on my 360. I hope MS keeps at it for the length of the generation, though I think we all know they'll probally just quit in a year or less.

I do wish however, they'd atleast list some of the games they're working on somewhere on Xbox.com. They don't need to give a date as to when they'll come out, but atleast let us know what is in the works.

I rented an Xbox game to see if you guys were being overly critical.

Wow.

Ninja Gaiden Black, from the second I popped it in, ran in slow motion during every fight scene. What a pathetic display for a beautiful game. My old broken Thompson would have run this better.

If you're crazy about old Xbox games, get an Xbox. It's so much cheaper anyway, and all three consoles will be out by the time you're done with its fantastic library.

It depends on the game. Going back to 2000-2001, probably about a third of XBox 1 games look like garbage compared to games from 2004-2005.

Two of those games are considered best in genre by most publications.

I don't think I agree with him, but this answer doesn't respond to what he was saying at all.

Yeah, it doesn't.

And those three games happen to run pretty flawlessly on the 360.

After seeing how crisp and clean Xbox games look on the 360, Im glad I got rid of my Xbox. SC:CT and Halo 2 look awesome on my 52" now. Hell even Spyro looks "good", almost too clean.

the two halos run more or less perfectly on 360, don't they? i've been meaning to replay them. and yeah, i don't expect that 360 bc will ever be an adequate replacement for an xbox.

After seeing how broken and buggy Hulk: Ultimate Destruction is on the 360 I'm holding onto my xbox to the grave.

How that made the BC list is well beyond me.

Ugh. I'm defintely in no rush to get a 360 if the BC is worthless. I was looking forward to dumping my old, clunky Xbox but I'm willing to hold out alot longer if I'm going to have to keep it around anyway. There are still a bunch of Xbox games I need to finish. I don't have room for 4 systems in my TV area, nor would I waste that much space on them if I did :\ This is some disappointing shit.

To those of you in the general public, gaming companies pretty much shut down during the the last couple weeks of december thru early january. And workers tend to take vacations in addition to this break.

1 exception would be if they needed to launch a product prior to xmas or early jan-feb. Then some of the coders, etc would work during this period. I highly doubt the BC group at microsoft worked over this period. Most likely this monday coming up will be the first real days of actual work since december.

So, no, ms has not stopped the bc stuff, just taking the normal end of year break. If you had to go thru crunch time at a studio, you would take the time off as well.

I think those are the very last people on earth they would want to hand a 360 SDK to.

Sure. But i still think they should. Maybe you would have better BC. Maybe your games could be "bleemed" too. When there is people stronger than you, you buy them. If you ever crack some really important security system like related to the government, NASA, FBI or whatever, you may get a job, not prison.

uh .. not really. the dmca makes it a criminal offense to even crack consumer-level encryption.

see: dmitry sklyarov, deCSS, etc.

Chaos Theory refuses to work for me now, I am angered. The initial loading screen locks my system up when it gets to the 80% point.

They already did. Microsoft purchased Connectix (developers of arguably the most compatible PSX emulator and creators of VirtualPC) in 2003

I thought i would love being able to play PSX games on my PS2. Then i quickly realized just how bad PSX games looked and NEVER again inserted a PSX game into my PS2.

Xbox games will never look as aged as PSX games.

Now, does the team update an underlying emulator for everything, or does each game have its own emulator and need to be addressed? (or both?)

Well ATI has to emulate Nvida GPU... as things goes its not easy.

That would be due to Nvida's unrefined design :lol

If the design was more elegant like Xenos, then I'm sure BC would work like a dream. :D

I played Halo, Halo 2 and Super Monkey Ball without any problems. As far as I'm concerned, BC on the 360 is great.

Once again, Microsoft haters are over-reacting to everything, without giving the company a chance. Now when PS3 and Revolution launch, the same people will be saying "Oh, but backward compatibility is hard to implement..." if there's any problem with any of the 2 machines.

All fanboys are like that.........Xbots would do the same if the situation was different and PS3 came out with these problems. Thank God I am a PC/ PS2 fanboy :)

I've never heard of Call of Cthulu but KOTOR and Halo are both out for PC, why didn't you just buy those versions?

Halo is a bit better on XBOX, I believe, and he could jump right into the sequel.

KOTOR looks nearly as good as the PC version running in high-res with AA cranked up when using the 360...but the framerate is still ass.

You cant play CT online, so when you dl the update the game hangs there. If you want to play the single player, simply delete all the CT files on your HDD... and dont download the CT update.

I think we create these threads to buffer the next update. I recall the "Microsoft will never update again" wonder of a thread and it's second summer in the wake of getting all Tom Clancy games working. In all seriousness, I can't remember a console having this difficulty in the scope of a BC project and staying behind it. Emulation takes some grade A nerds and bully for Microsoft at doing so much already.

Give it another five years.

No. It's just the nature of the PSX that it produced the worst looking games. A big part of that had to due with the resolution.

SNES and Saturn (2d) games look better than PSX games because they aren't so grainy and pixelated. Dreamcast still looks good to me and while it is dated the games still look "clean."

Same with the N64. As soon as the Cube came out, it was hard to look at my unfinished N64 games and want to play them. NOt so hard to play Cube games.

I would buy a 360 right now if the BC was aorubnd 90% of xbox games working perfectly. But i don't hink that's ever going to happen, i don't think you can software emulate the last gens hardware, it takes too much power. I hope the ps3 doesn't go with software emulation for ps2 games.

I am wondering the same question too. Not having any 360 games that 1) have not beaten or 2) don't care about is making me wish that their BC list did not suck so much. Sure I have never played Barbie Horse adventures but I am not interested in that game.

The Xbox/PS2/GC have a similar resolution problem now with HDTVs available. 480i upscaled to 720p/1080p can look pretty nasty on some TV sets/computer monitors.

How to play Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory on your Xbox 360 with all the new maps and updates:
1) Download the latest compatibility update (December 2005): http://download.microsoft.com/download/5/8/a/58a10dbc-9445-4eed-83d5-22f8ad8ee855/default.zip, burn it to a CD and load it onto your 360 in order to update it’s BC capabilities.
2) Load up SC:CT and proceed to download all the Xbox Live updates and maps.
Optional) If Steps 1 & 2 don’t work for you then restart the procedure but make sure to do this step first: If you have played SC:CT on your system then make sure to delete any instance of SC:CT from your HDD. You can delete these files from the Memory option found within the System Blade.

All (except a few) Xbox games supported 480p. Of course 480i -> anything p is problematic, but it certainly isn't the problem for Xbox games.
