Has there been a movie sequel better than its first flick in the last decade?

Not counting long running shit like Harry Potter or James Bond (or the MCU or the X-MEN series if you don’t know how examples work).

I can’t think of a single one.

Maybe Blade Runner 2049 but I haven’t seen it yet.

I preferred the first one. The sequel was goofy in a bad way.

The problem is the sequel was actually for Godzilla FANS and Godzilla fans wear adult diapers so it makes sense that a film that catered to them was goofy.

I liked the first one much better as well. The first one felt a lot like Jaws.

My answer is Infinity War.

VHS 2 is arguably better than the first, I think both are excellent and I waver back and forth as to which is my favourite, but most people agree the cult segment from the second one is the most epic thing that franchise ever did. I think the framing narrative segments in the second movie are a lot creepier as well.

There's a load of Blum House movies like Annabelle Creation that were better than their previous entries, but since OP has arbitrarily excluded studios with a consistent output of titles like that, I guess they wouldn't count.

Honestly I think this shows there's just fewer stand alone movies that get sequels, but aren't then spun off into series these days.

If something does well, expect multiple entries and possible inclusion into a shared universe, rather than just one, maybe two further entries that are years, even decades apart, like their used to be.

If you count them as individual movies, Berserk: The Golden Age Arc. First one is pretty mediocre. Second (and third) improved the animation significantly.

Dark Knight certainly, Batman Begins had a lot of things, set a good foundation, Bruce preparing, partnering with Lucius, Gordon etc. Joker made things way more fun than ever and people forget it's the second movie in the Nolan trilogy.

I haven't seen Cars 3 actually but all the other 3 were far worse than their predecessor, Sicario 2 being the worst offender.
Cars 3 is complete garbage....
Cars 3 isn't as good as cars but it is better than cars 2.

Parabellum is the same as cars 3 in that the original is better but not the predecessor.

How to train your dragon 1 really disappointed me. Its read the books too my son as he was growing up and the film is nothing like them, but by the time the second one rolled around it felt like a completely different series and I enjoyed it more. Hidden world is probably better again.

Siccario 2 just clicked as a better story to me.

Thread said the first so I was comparing to #1.

I know it's not a film but I'm rewatching Twin Peaks: The Return and sometimes I just thank God that David Lynch exists, and was able to produce such an incredible follow up to the original series and movie. I don't care if you don't like it.
