Have you played Roblox?

I've never played Roblox and I always assumed it was akin to Minecraft given the similar style. Yesterday the below video showed up on my feed. I rarely watch Asmon's stuff, but given that Roblox has recently been in the news a lot regarding child safety issues, I figured it was worth checking out.

I watched him play for around 40 minutes and I can safely say I have no fucking clue what Roblox is

he joined the most popular servers or worlds or whatever they are. the most popular ones were completely nonsensical and extremely weird and uncomfortable. role-play as a baby was a very popular one for some reason. there were several servers that advertise "RP as a baby"

a lot of it doesn't even seem like a game. there was a poop simulator where people sat around and pooped while talking to each other

after watching him play I'm somehow even more confused as to what Roblox is

have you played Roblox? if so, what are your thoughts

Yes - -I played with my oldest son for a bit back when he first got into games, and his brothers were too young. But I haven't touched it for a few years now.

Some of it was actually kind of fun, I remember one where you'd throw your guy off a cliff and try to break as many bones as possible, the more damage you did you'd get modifiers / get to jump from higher up. Lots of mindless 'tycoon' style ones that weren't bad. One where you were trying to survive natural disasters on different maps. Right now the kids are really into Grow a Garden and Steal a Brainrot which are fine.

Like any platform like this, there's lots and lots of trash. It's like Mario Maker, right? 90% is trash, 9% is decent, and 1% is actually pretty good.

My kids love it. I played once for about 15 minutes because they begged me to, but I couldn't stand it.

Their favorite games:
Dress to Impress - some game where you have to dress your avatar according to some theme and then vote on a winner

Royale High - some fantasy themed high school sim

Murder Mystery

Restaurant Tycoon

I did see them playing one game where the goal was to fall down a mountain and get the highest medical bill possible. That one looked kind of cool

I didn't even know what this game was even about until recently.

But no I have zero attention playing this game, the artstyle is downright gross.

Why would I? I have hundreds of paid games to play over f2p slop.

EDIT: wtf did I just watch? I thought it was a kids game about building blocks...

is Roblox mostly a mix of social rooms like VR chat room type places combined with platformer style games? is that accurate?
Every game allows for multiplayer, and the genre can be anything, shooters, RPG's, puzzle, action whatever.

My son has been playing Squid Game on it recently and one of the Dalgona cookies that you need to cut out is sackboy.

My nieces play it, and I make fun of them every time they do. I've played it a few times with them, constantly taking the piss out of them in good fun.

It's absolute garbage. But if I were a 7 year old, I'd definitely be playing it.

You kind of have to define Roblox. There are many different games available.

Yes. My only experience with Roblox is with one game. When my granddaughter was young I was her Adopt Me mule. Her mom too. We had to level up pets for her so she could make mega/neon pets. Plus, to this day, in 10th grade, she can't play on Roblox without her mom. :messenger_grinning_squinting:

Some of it's not too different from the games I used to play when I was younger. Simulation games for example which barely exist today are on there, games like Sim Tower, Sim Ant etc.

Yeah i play tower defense simulator with my son. He loves roblox. Played a few other horror games with him, thats about it.

Honestly, it feels like the custom maps in Warcraft 3. Custom maps in Warcraft 3 were much better imo. Only difference is you can monetize in Roblox maps but not Warcraft 3.

It always looked like Second Life, but for kids, so never had any interest.

Not shocked that it's accumulated some of the grosser parts of Second Life though, and glad more attention is being given to it since the company doesn't seem to do much about it.

No. I never ever thought it would get as successful and popular as it has. It's really odd to me. It's just an open platform where people can create their own content. Pretty much like Second Life, even where it all looked like ass. I remember seeing videos of people making an FPS game in Roblox that was pretty impressive all things considered. But it's nothing that would interest me enough to check it out. Hell, everything I've ever seen of Roblox just looks extremely unappealing to me. Plus all the weird predatory shit that's apparently rampant on it makes me want to avoid it like the plague even more so.

From my perspective, Fortnite does basically everything Roblox does, but in UE, and with more moderation. Along with a better and more well put together backend.

My girlfriend's little nephew plays it from time to time and there was a point where she had to contact customer service regarding a gift card or something. I was shocked that the entire process was pretty damn messy. Along with finding and tracking his account. It felt like whatever money they've made was not put back into the game whatsoever, lol.
