OK, so I recently got my connection upgraded from 512kb to about 8mbit, which is about the one of the fastest that's been offered here in Australia right now.
For the first couple weeks, I didn't actually believe that it was an 8mbit connection (it's actually truly a 6.5 mbit connection at best given line attenuation), recieving files at only 1.5mbit at best from overseas sites... but then I started downloading files from my service provider directly at 6 to 8 mbit speeds and proved to myself that my connection was indeed capable of that kinda speed.
But even with that large number... a good deal of the internet is still really damn slow... especially sites like GA. Even sites that should have super fat connections like MS only have a data transfer rate of about 200kB/s for me (I was downloading their HD WMV samples).
So the question is, is this the way it is for everyone else with a fat connection? i.e. most of your download speeds aren't limited by your connection but the connection of the site? Also what kinda bittorrent speeds do you get?
With a well seeded torrent, even with the main seeder been overseas, I can get about 200-300kB/s, with the average torrent downloading from 4-80kB/s for me. I can get the total torrent speed upto about 400-500kB/s (downloading several good torrents at once), although it's more like 200-250kB/s at best on average.
Also, how many of you have download limits on your connection?
In australia, most ISPs have peak and offpeak limits, my connection ranging in at 20/20 gigabyte... but this month for some reason, having exceeded my offpeak limit, I've still remained uncapped, and have downloaded a further 15gigs at full normal speed.
Finally, how fast and how much is broadband, typically in your country (which country)? Does the government there subsidise or promote broadband infrastructure? How new is the broadband infrastructure?
It'd be good to hear about what happened in Japan; all I can remember is Japan went from some kinda internet backwater, paying internet per minute (thanks to the way they charge phone calls) to slightly worse than South Korea, internet.
------
On internet speed connection tests that aren't local, I got about 1.7mbit for I think a Verizon mirror, and 1.5mbit for a test located in a rural region in Australia. A local test returned values of 6-8mbit.
What's it like for others? Do overseas or geographically far connections prove to be just as low for most people?
I think for the most part routers along the path just aren't fast enough to deal with greater than T1 speeds, especially to geographically distant countries like Australia.
