As the title suggests, I'm hunting for Miyazaki's works on American DVD format. I've seen Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away years ago, and am interested in finally owning those, and others. I'd like them all.

Here are the ones I've found and ordered so far:
Princess Mononoke
Spirited Away
The Castle of Cagliostro
Kiki's Delivery Service
Porco Rosso
Castle in the Sky Laputa
Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind

Is this all of them? Are there any more? One of the info captions mentioned My Neighbor Totoro, but B&N doesn't seem to have a page for it.

Any thoughts?

I'm open to a general discussion about which where good, and which weren't. Thanks.

Dont bother looking for the Totoro DVD, just wait til the Disney SE comes out, whenever that is.

The biggest major Miyazaki work that hasnt been released now, imo is Future Boy Conan, and I honesly doubt well see it here any time soon, although I hope im proved wrong

You missed The Cat Returns.
This isnt directed by Miyazaki

And even i am moderately surprised
I ignored "the Cat Returns" but finally watched it a few weeks ago, and thought it was pretty good.

Edit: ;)

Unless youre planning on getting these all in one shot, I reccomend you get Nausicaa above all the rest, followed Kiki. Nausicaa is pretty much one my all time favorites

You should also pick up every single volume of the Nausicaa manga, which imo is honestly one of the best comic works ive ever read.

I've recently checked out Nausicaa, Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away... I think Spirited Away is the best of the three by far but both Nausicaa and Princess Mononoke were excellent as well.

That's correct. The Cat Returns is a Studio Ghibli film, but isn't Miyazaki, which is pretty much all I'm focusing on now (except for Grave of the Fireflies. I saw that twice, and will probably never have the strength to watch it again, but feel I must have it, and thus ordered it.)

Those movies listed above, I've ordered.

Why is it I shouldn't bother with Totoro just yet, exactly?

Two other notable Studio Ghibli films, but not directed by Miyazaki himself:
- Only Yesterday
- Whispers of the Heart
I personally love those two movies more than the fantasy-based Castle in the Sky and Valley of the Wind... etc. The jokes are more witty and realistic in those two films due to the realistic settings.

I can't find anything that really details Miyazaki's involvement with Cat Returns beyond that of developing the concept from the manga. He was involved in some context though, and that's enough of a technicality for it to be mentioned in this thread ;)

How crazy are you going to get? If you want to really be a completist you need Panda Kopanda and Sherlock Hound. And of course no Miyazaki collection is complete without Totoro, but sadly the only version available is the edited dub :_:

In the US, that is. If you have a Region 2 DVD player, all the Japanese DVDs have English subs.

The Cat Returns is pretty underrated IMO. A lot of people skip it since it's from the "younger" generation of the Ghibli staff and didn't do as well financially in Japan, but I found it to be quite enjoyable. In my opinion, the most enjoyable title Ghibli has ever released is Whisper of the Heart and I'm absolutely dying to get it on R1.. here's to hoping it comes in the next wave of DVDs.

I'm only looking at R1 DVDs right now. Is Disney supposed to be releasing a superior Totoro DVD at some point?

If you're REALLY intent on finding anything and everything Miyazaki on DVD, then another odd one would be The Last Unicorn. Miyazaki's studio (before being known by the name of Studio Ghibli) handled all aspects of design and animation for the film. Anyways, you did ask for "everything", so I figured I'd just throw that out there. :lol

Also, I'm surprised that nobody has mentioned it yet, but Graveyard of the Fireflies is a wonderful (albeit depressing) Miyazaki film and among his greatest works. If you can find it out there on DVD then I'd suggest adding it to your list.

Thanks. Alright. It hurt, but I just put in a $280 order for DVDs. Ouchies.

(Also picked up Robin Hood Prince of Thieves, Princess Bride, Monsters Inc, Finding Nemo, and Incredibles.)

Are you looking for films by Ghibli itself or only those which Miyazaki has had a direct involvement with?

I'm looking for R1 DVDs of Miyazaki's films. His works. Not even those helmed by others with Miyazaki's aid. Just HIS babies. They could be Studio Ghibli, or otherwise.

Yes. They were originally planning on releasing it with Nausicaa and Porco Rosso last month but ended up delaying it and replacing it with The Cat Returns.

IMO....

Spirited Away > Nausicaa > Castle of Cagliostro > Laputa > Princess Mononoke > My Neighbor Totoro > Kiki's Delivery Service

All can be classified as "excellent." I still haven't seen Porco Rosso, though. I should really get on that one of these days.

Also, there is Howl's Moving Castle, which is currently trying to chase down Spirited Away's box office record in Japan, and should be hitting theaters stateside around June.

The recent releases of Nausicaa, The Cat Returns, and Porco Rosso include a coupon where, if you buy all three, you can send away for a free copy of either Castle in the Sky, Spirited Away, or Kiki's Delivery Service. It might be too late if you've already placed an order though...

Also, can someone tell me how "Hayao" is pronounced? I still struggle with some Japanese names...

Ah well. Too late. Thanks for the heads up though.

I suppose I could still request the free movie and eBay it or something. :lol

Edit - I'll take a guess, and suggest that Hayao is pronounced:

Hah-yah-oh

where the hah and the yah both sound like the a in mirage, and the oh at the end sounds cut off, just shy of a true long o as in rope.

Pretty much as it looks. "Hah-yah-oh"

Saying it together fast makes it sound more like "hah-yow" though.

Yep, echoes what ive read. Many of the terrible impressions noted that adapting an existing work was the first mistake for Miyazaki.....

I'm not too familiar with some of the titles in English but I wholely endorse this thread.

Spirited Away > Nausicaa > Castle of Cagliostro > Laputa > Princess Mononoke > My Neighbor Totoro > Kiki's Delivery Service

which one is the castle of Cagliostro? I don't recall watching that one. The pig pilot one was quite good too.

I really liked GRAVE OF THE FIREFLIES and these: Spirited Away > Nausicaa > Laputa > Princess Mononoke > My Neighbor Totoro > Kiki's Delivery Service

I know there's a fan fave in Pocco Rossoo (pig pilot) but it was just too far out for me and the ones about the raccoons is weird.

I watched Howl at the Japanese Festival in Sydney last year. Like it immediately and found it rather enjoyable, as did my companion - the romantic nature of the story is quite nice although the story scope not as epic as some of the other fantasty Ghibli works. Found the ending came too soon (good thing I guess) :) It was a bit mismash and you have to wonder where the story was going but then some of the earlier Ghibli movies did that too. The story isn't as clear as something like Spirited away. Still good though. I found a lot of it to be great. Howl does demand you suspend belief because of the setting for the universe (magic + warships).

The Ghibli art/animation makes any feature instantly watchable imo.

Cagliostro is his Lupin III film. His feature directorial debut.

.....

As I said it was specifically pertinent to Howls source material and Miyazakis execution of the whole thing.

anyways like I said, its irrelevant until I see the movie myself

...got me on the kiki thing though.....:p

I saw it and thought it was awesome also. I actually like it better than Spirited Away and Mononoke-Hime.

However the themes are pretty similar to some of Miyazaki's earlier works. It's no wonder he picked the book to begin with.

It wasn't one of Miyazaki's finest but miyazki's worst is still better than 99% of the stuff out there.

BTW: I recently bought Howl's moving castle by Diana wynne Jones havn't had a chance to read it yet.

Hey man, how's it going? How are you enjoying DMC 3? Anyway, thank you for the info as well. I have seen Kiki many, many times yet I have never gotten around to buying it, so I guess I might as well get it for free.

don't know if anyone's mentioned it but Howl really wasn't meant to be Miyazaki's work. He might have picked it but there was another director incharge of developement/production and this chap gave up half way and ran off. Maybe's that's why Howl isn't perceived to be as good but like I said, I really really enjoyed it.
