LOL forgot about the sherlock hound series, which is bad because I have all six volumes released by pioneer.
So how's the series as a whole and how's the 6 episodes Miyazaki directed? I believe it's aimed at an even younger audience than his films right?

I dont recall which episodes he personally directed off hand but know it's the earlier episodes. I think it was aimed at a younger demographic, IIRC he partnered with an Italian TV network and it was to be aired in Europe. Unfortunatly it was not that popular, and interest waned. When Nausicaa was released in the theatres a couple of episodes of sherlock hound was shown as a bonus, dont recall offhand which episodes they were but I'm pretty sure they were the miyazaki ones.

IIRC the story after that was interest in Sherlock Hound picked up and more episodes were made however none of them was by Miyazaki. I liked the series as a whole they were very charming, also some of the characters in the Sherlock hound series have very strong resemlences to miyzaki character's later on.

Here is a picture of some of my anime collection with the sherlock hound DVD's although volume 3 seems to be conspicuously absent.

I have seen almost everything mentioned in this thread, except Howl's Moving Castle (isn't out here yet) and My Neighbors the Yamadas. My favorites are the more fantasy-oriented movies (Laputa, Nausica, Totoro, Mononoke, Spirited Away, Kiki's Delivery Service) but Whisper of the Heart is awesome too, it kinda stands between the very fantasy-like movies and more realistic ones like Only Yesterday. On a previous version of GAF I once started a topic wondering if the 'magic' of a Miyazaki movie ever would be captured in a game. Still waiting :).

Someone I know picked up an amazing value box set on eBay. I've yet to see them all, but I absolutely love the stuff I've seen!

value box set on ebay translates to hong kong bootlegs--most often the quality sucks.

I've recently started watching these studio ghibli films. Saw spirited away, laputa, the cat returns, and porco rosso. Spirited away I saw first and loved it, laputa was pretty good too, but does anyone else get the impression that the stories feel very similar? Laputa and spirited both have an older grandma type figure that the lead characters believe to be bad, then turns out to be good, both have their conclusions happen in the sky, even The Cat Returns does. But still I enjoy them for the most part, maybe i'm just watching them too closely together.

Also, anyone know the best deal on the R1 spirited away?

There are certain stuff that I would definitely support by buying it legally. Miyazaki and Pixar's films are one of them :D Anyways, seriously, WATCH Only Yesterday and Whisper of the Heart. Those two are beyond fantastic !

Anyone know how long that deal lasts for buying Nausicaa, Cat Returns and Porco Russo and then getting one of the previously released Ghibli films for free?

Agreed. I've got a B&N membership so I generally get my DVDs as well as books from there. Just ordered the 3 Pixar movies I'm interested in, and all of the Miyazaki flicks I could get my hands on through B&N.com. When it comes to movies, particularly "obscure" ones, I stay the HELL away from eBay and its "value" packs.

I think it was mentioned earlier in this thread. 08/05 no?

Howl's Moving Castle is the same way, more or less. I guess it's one of the story themes/ideas that Miyazaki loves.

You should also pick up every single volume of the Nausicaa manga, which imo is honestly one of the best comic works ive ever read.

I second this. The Nausicaa manga is one of the coolest things I've read, period.

Oh sweet, I missed that. I definitely need to start picking up these Ghibli films... as it stands my collection is nil.
