Will Microsoft Announce a HD DVD Xbox 360 at CES?

Richard Doherty, an analyst from research firm Envisioneering Group, predicts that tomorrow Bill Gates’ main message at his CES keynote will focus Windows Vista, the next-generation Windows, but Doherty also thinks Gates will talk about HD DVD as part of the Xbox 360.

Microsoft has denied in several opportunities that it is planning a HD DVD upgrade for the Xbox 360, but last year Bill Gates said that the Xbox 360 video may incorporate in the future the next-generation DVD format developed by Toshiba.

“The initial shipments of Xbox 360 will be based on today's DVD format,” Gates said at a joint news conference with Toshiba. “We are looking at whether future versions of Xbox 360 will incorporate an additional capability of an HD DVD player or something else.”

Bill Gates’ CES keynote is only 24 hours away so tomorrow we’ll know if the analyst was right or if it was pure speculation based on the recent HD DVD, Blu-ray Disc war hype.

We’ll have more on HD DVD for the Xbox 360 as it develops.

I am confused. I didnt know Bill Gates actually said that. Makes it sound certain.

How is this for certain?

There are going to be some more surprises on the hardware end?

Could be! Look, for us to say we’re going to go through a whole generation without an HD capacity drive—I think that would be naive to assume that we’ll be sitting here at the end of the Xbox 360 generation and no such device will have shipped. On the other hand, we haven’t announced anything, Sony’s announced something, and who knows? You know, they could have announced support for Beta instead of VHS. We’re trying to watch and really be agile on our feet, relative to the issues between HD DVD and Blu-ray. As a platform provider we’re trying to make sure our software standards are well-supported in both places. As the provider of the Xbox, we’re sitting there saying, “Look, we’re shipping NOW.” This was not an option. Neither one of these things were an option for our first shipment, so it’s kind of a moot point. Sony’s saying, “Who knows what the standards are, but we’re going to commit to what we’re going to commit to.” I think we can be nimble and agile and that’ll be important.

So there’s a possibility of an Xbox 360 Mark II coming along?

I won’t hypothesize on how we get there. I just think it’s just wrong-minded to think that somehow we’d go a whole generation without this. We’re not going to be sitting here five years saying, “Oh jeez, we don’t have HD DVD-type storage.”

HD-DVD version of 360 announced one month after release?

Nintendo / Apple alliance?

Worst pre-show rumor mill ever FTL

If it happens, at least they won't piss off too many gamers given their inability to supply current units. Only a small percentage of the userbase will get screwed...

I don't see why everyone gets upset over this stupid rumor. Who cares if they start selling 360s with HD-DVD players built in. Noone cried about the Gamecubes that could play DVDs, or Sony integrating the network adapter into the PS2 when everyone before hand had to buy it seperately. This shit happens all the time.

Admittedly, announcing it one month after launch would be a bit extreme.

I think it's just a BS rumor, but if it were true, I'd be cashing in my BB replacement plan when the HD-DVD units rolled out.

"It just shuts off after about an hour or so. I don't know what's wrong with it. I need a voucher, please."

Um.. so you're saying they would only piss of a small percentage of the userbase, of which.. is the entire userbase? :p

Given the way HD-DVD seems to be headed, so would the new ones.

Blu-Ray or bust!
ibtn.

As a 360 owner I could care less. I'll get a standalone player when the format wars are over anyway if it there is a huge difference in quality between hd movies.

I just switched my flight to an earlier one to make it. SF isn't too hot at the moment anyway.

Well have fun. For some reason I could swear CES was on Jan 11th, why did I think that... hmmm...

A feature length film in 1080p can fit on a regular sized DVD for gods sake so who cares whether it is blu ray or HD-DVD?

Yeah but what about the bitrate?

I care because BRD is the superior format and the only one with all the movie studios on its side. But it would be like MS to come in and screw it up at the last minute per usual...

I don't know what the bitrate on the T2 Extreme Edition is for the 1080p version but visually it is pretty damn impressive.

What I'm getting at is if they can get 2+ hours on a regular DVD, even a 20+ Gig HD-DVD is more than enough to handle the majority of movies at very good resolution.

Just out of curiosity, which DVD players support 1080p and what kind of video connector do they use?

pretty damn high actually...

anyway, if xbox 360 turbo has hd-dvd, it must mean that MS got a great deal or something.. otherwise it is pretty retarded and wont really benefit MS.... I hope it stays as a rumour.

This is the 2nd disc on the T2 Extreme Edition that contains the HD 1080p version of the movie and can only be played on a PC with Windows Media 9 or higher.

I just read that if you do a few tricks with a Windows Media Center PC you can copy the movie to your PC Hard Disk and stream it to your 360.

There is an HD-DVD version of Island Fever 3 out. The visual fidelity is definately noticable than a DVD, but not enough to make me go wow. For the uninformed, IS3 is pr0n

Curious: Do you own an Xbox 360?

So in the upcoming format war (which is all but over IMO) you are going with HD-DVD?

actually i'd prefer that too because IF we are gonna have this format war (which is crazy dumb), at least I'd have both formats :P

Just a bunch of hot air. Games on HD-DVD will never happen, and there's really no advantage to sell a 360 that can play HD-DVD movies but not games on HD-DVD.

I would too if we were going to have a war....but it looks as if that's a moot point for now. HD-DVD is a fairly lost cause, unless something huge happens soon. And MS throwing support behind it won't go far to counteract the movie studio wishes IMO.

I thought the xxxx turbo was related Nintendo lol the Gamecube Turbo or something :lol

No, I don't have a 360. I do however have two HDTV's and a KEEN interest in BRD for movies. I want HD-DVD to die a fiery death as it should have months ago, especially once EVERY movie studio committed to BRD. I will most probably have a PS3 for the BRD capability unless BRD players are cheaper than expected. MS made their bed with the DVD drive for the 360 and refusing to wait.

None of the games would be on HD-DVD, so it would be nothing other than movie playing. Without the 360 supporting HD-DVD, it will die the death it should have months ago. And we are left with one HD movie format, the way it should be.

They could do it. It would just be a hardware revision that would need an updated video card, HDMI out, and the HD-DVD drive, wouldn't it?

Games would still come out on regular DVD just the machine could play movies on HD-DVD discs.

When did Universal Pictures commit to BRD?

link?

I'm no fan of HD-DVD and that would be a pretty interesting development to me but I think you are confusing them with Warner or the Universal Music Group.

GTA next 4dvd(song asset reuse through the various disc) disc set + 5th HDdvd single disc version for those with HD-360 :lol

Since it won't affect gameplay, I won't be mad if they add a new SKU with it. Were people in Japan incensed at the Panasonic Q? Of course not!

Hey, come up with your own analogy! I already used that one in this thread
