HD Receiver or Tivo?

so yeah, time to renew my contract with DirecTV.

with that, comes my choice of a free HD receiver, or Tivo.

i'd like the HD Receiver personally just because well, i have an HDTV. but, seems like there's only a handful of channels that are HD, and well, something tells me Tivo totally outweighs some HD channels and the occasional HD show.

for those of you who have the HD receiver from DirecTV, what are your thoughts on it? any reasons as to why i should get it over the tivo or what?

you can't pull OTA HD signals? get the Tivo

Simple. Get the HD-Tivo! :D You'll have to pay a few bucks, but it's worth it. How long have you been a DirecTV customer? Do you subscribe to NFL Sunday Ticket? If so, you should call customer retention and ask for the HD-Tivo deal. There were some guys over at the AVS Forums talking about it a few weeks back, and they were getting free HD-Tivos!

that's not such a bad idea actually, but i don't watch enough tv to justify paying anything extra. like i said, it's a free upgrade.

Just thought I'd point out the optiion was there, should you choose to go that route. These HD-Tivo's are expensive units, and if you had the chance to grab one, it's worth it.

yeah, it's definitely a good idea. im going to discuss it with the household tonight i guess.

still, the question remains though, tivo vs hd receiver.

If I had to choose between one or the other, and couldn't get the combo unit of both. I'd go with the Tivo. If you don't already have a DVR, adding one to the house will change your life. And I mean that literally.

In my experience, HD Reciever. I have a Tivo and my recorded stuff usually looks like shit on my HD screen, I usually would rather just download a HD rip if I miss a show i really reallly want to see. Tivo always ****s up my schedule and will randomnly switch channels, I got that fixed. I would much rather have a HD reciever than Tivo though.

like i said, im not looking to spend any money here.
Then what the hell are you doing thinking about an HD reciever? You're going to need to think about money if you want that.(You need to replace your satellite and get the HD package to get that receiver working.)
