Heavenly Sword - Developer Q&A

Also, I'm pretty sure that in the closeup of her face you posted above, from the original trailer, was pre-rendered (the only piece according to the devs). They didn't have the facial animation system done, and spliced it in for that scene. So that could make her face appear different as well.

This is her CG face from last year's trailer:

FUGLY, in my opinion. Her face from the E3 demo is mucho better.

These screens neither represent the E3 playable demo nor the final game...they are from an old build.
The screen on the left is from the E3 2005 trailer. DeanoC mentioned that for the close-up they used CGI because they hadn't finished the facial modelling, but that was used in a different part of the trailer. The screen on the right is an off screen capture from the E3 2006 showfloor demo. The press screenshots which came out at E3 2006 were from a pre-E3 build and featured the same face model used in the E3 2005 trailer for distance shots.

ok thanks for clearing that up! Wonder if they will add depth of field effect in the game as seen in the E32005 trailer? I really hope they add motion blur though!

isnt it E3 2005 to the right and 2006 to the left?

No. There was a massive upgrade in the in-game model from last year's trailer to this year's playable demo. Here's another comparison I made, taken straight from IGN's E3 gameplay video:

Wow, the cloth seemed to have improved a lot. I hadn't remembered it quite so angular in the 05 vid before.

The graphics are clearly better in the newest screenshots but i prefer her old face. I'm really looking forward to seeing footage of the incredible environments in the environments trailer.

This game is what PS3 is all about, a game that simply can't be made on current gen consoles. I want the graphics to absorb me into the game and make me feel like i'm watching a movie without the extensive cutscenes.

Wow, very impressive. I remember before E3 the haters jumped on the screens saying how it was a downgrade. This here is proof of the contrary. Lighting especially looks nice, among other things.

I think you got the years mixed up jett, the 2005 video blew away the 2006 stuff. The e3 build was missing a lot of effects or maybe I need to take another look!

very impressive if the dates are correct

I think you need to have a second look.
More light sources in the 2k6 build.
Praises to nAo, DeanA, DeanC.

No, it's correct, you lunatic. Download IGN's gameplay videos and check for yourself. :P

Also very interesting that development began in 2003, kinda makes it hard to call it a GoW clone

Yeah I've been thinking the samething too, but you know GAF.

YOU KNOW WHY???? Because they were judging the game's graphics using MAGAZINE pics!!
It's the samething that people were doing within the last two weeks with Lair and Resistence. They see scans or screenshots in a magazine and think that it's a great representation of what the game will look like.

People need to wake up and realize that with next-gen games you CAN'T judge the quailty of the graphics using magazine screenshots. You have to see it in motion. This samething can be said about Hitman for Xbox 360.

They made a mistake by releasing those pre-E3 screens :\

I think of it as the "blockbuster action-movie experience". When you play the game, it looks and feels like you are playing through a movie without having to interrupt gameplay with those laborious cut-scenes I really hate in games.
My favorite part of the Q&A.

Andy Serkis, the world's leading CG actor, famous for his roles as Gollum in "The Lord of the Rings" and Kong in "King Kong", was heavily involved in the creative process. As well as starring in Heavenly Sword as the villain, King Botan, Andy was a major contributor to the character development, writing, casting, directing and performance capture for the PLAYSTATION 3 game.
Oh wow, I knew he was doing the motion capture, but I didn't know he was involved in all that other stuff. This game is going to kick so much ass.

it's actually really refreshing to see a developer that's SO hyped for their game. lol It's hyping me up even more!

also, I think Naughty Dog and Insomniac share Ninja Theory's "blockbuster action-movie experience" philosophy judging from what they're going into next-gen with.

Is NT a Sony 1st party, yet?

No, and I hope they don't become one, it'd spoil the whole 'independant developer made good' thing they've got going on, which should hopefully continue with HS being a huge success.

If this game is successful enough to franchise, you can bet your sweet betty Sony will swallow them right up

Especially considering this interviewee already talks like he's first-party

They're right next-door to SCEE Cambridge and I think at least one (Dean Ashton) if not two, went over to SCEE Technology group, and they're part of the SCEE community. Heck the founders were from SCEE Cambridge to begin with. It's good for them to be at least second-party (which in a sense they are currently) or first-party (since the funding and support will ultimately be better and there's less worrying), they get a stable relationship with a very supportive first-party publisher, good funding, good tech support from SCEE Technology group and only one platform to worry about.

DeanA is at SCEE Technology group now, and has been for quite some time. nAo and DeanoC pwnz though. ~_~

Oic. No wonder.

Anyway, I heard there was mention of some Chinajoy game expo from July 28 to 30 (Heavenly Sword will be among the PS3 games shown), I don't want to hype it because I don't need all the hate if nothing new comes through.

Well, Sony did give them a chance and told them to "go all out" when pretty much everyone else said "too ambitious, tone it down." I'm sure they're quite grateful.

Well hot damn!

I guess there goes the OMG TEH DOWNGRADE TOTAL!!1 thread of old.

There's no "jump" button in PoP games either but they have lots of platforming. I think I read somewhere that focus of HS won't be platforming though.

Wow, so there's no jumping in the game............so much for "verticality" in next gen level designs

that was one of the best comparison pictures I have seen.

So many people bitch about graphics and it's nice to have someone make one of those side by side comparisons, especially for HS.

Good Q&A. Sooo hyped for this. The focus is 100% spot-on IMO.
3. How does Heavenly Sword compare with other titles?

It is hard to compare Heavenly Sword to other games as we do break a few genre conventions. The closest I can come up with is something like Resident Evil 4. It might seem like an odd comparison but Heavenly Sword is an intensely personal story-driven action game. When you play through it, it feels and looks like you are playing through a blockbuster. Even the fights look like they are pulled straight out of a movie. For example there are some scenes where you face hundreds if not thousands of enemies but they are just a part of the overall experience.

We need to see this...
