Helldivers 2 could be so much bigger if they replicated Fortnite’s BattlePass system

Helldivers 2 has incredible gameplay but it is still missing reasons to replay.

I play Fortnite because you only pay for one BattlePass and the rest are FREE as long as you complete them, and to get there you are given numerous sub-missions within the game which helps keep the game feeling fresh.

Every game you play should lead to unlocking a new part of the battlepass, or at least make the next unlockable closer in sight. Multiplayer games are far more enjoyable when it gives you multiple reasons to play.

TLDR; Gameplay only gets you so far, there needs to be a fair reward system in place to get more players checking in frequently.

Everything on Fortnite is free, you just pay for skins
I don't see that working for Helldivers unless they start making more updates and events but that would be impossible
Like naughty dog discovered you need a huge team to make it work and things are planned years ahead

I'm not sure how Fortnite does it as I didn't like the game when I played several years back, but I do like the idea of paying once and being able to unlock all future battle passes with currency earned through the current pass like you can in THE FINALS. I paid $15 a year ago for the first pass and have been able to unlock the next 4 battle passes without paying any extra. I think Helldivers 2 system is fine in that you can acquire currency in missions but the amount you get without target farming is quite low. That and they release new war bonds way too often for my liking. I haven't played for a while and there are like 6 more war bonds - it's quite crazy.

If someone as small as Embark can do it then there should be no reason why Arrowhead can’t, especially with Sony’s backing.

Fortnite system is worse, IMO you are time limited. You have to play to keep that carrot rolling. If you stop you will be short for vbucks for the next. Helldivers you stop for whatever period and pick up from there. While the pass doesn’t have enough to rearn the next after the first. You can earn currency in game with roughly the same amount of time you would need to level a battlepass in Fortnite.

You have to grind in fornite, but in helldivers you aren’t time limited.
I wouldn’t call it a grind, you have to play the game and complete the weekly tasks that are available for the entire life of the battlepass.

You do that and the next one is all paid for.

It’s better than not having the option and playing less because there is less to do, and fewer rewards to play toward.

It’s already GaaS, I want more consumer friendly GaaS.
Their brain just stops at anything GAAS.

I'm literally setting up a GAAS Derangement Syndrome foundation as I type this. It's the saddest affliction known to man, bar none. I've already reached out to Sarah McLachlan.

No thanks. I prefer paying once and having the ability to unlock everything just from playing the game.
Yea that all sounds great in theory and I generally agree with you for games that are one and done but good luck to any new players buying Helldivers 2 now or into the future when there are 20 warbonds for you to unlock. That will take a huge amount of time, even more so if you don't do SC farming runs.

You have to grind in fornite, but in helldivers you aren’t time limited.
Can't compare to Fortnite as I haven't played it much at all, but at least in THE FINALS I can unlock all of the rewards simply by playing the game each day like I normally would doing daily and weekly contracts that reward XP. It's not like in HD2 where you have to actively look for and farm SC to have enough for the next one that releases in a month's time. The current battle pass on THE FINALS is going for 90+ days. Plenty of time if you are interested in doing it.

I played about 10-15 hours on PC when it launched, my system couldn't handle the game...

Now that I'm gaming on PS5, I'm tempted to dive back in (pun not intended). But the prospect of "grinding, grinding, and grinding" - really puts me off.

The fact that specific weapons are locked behind separate battle passes is really stupid to me.

Oh well. I hope the game thrives though. It's a more approachable EDF for the masses, and gaming needs more content like that.

Too bad progression is dumb.

Well thats kinda tied to HD2’s progression system or lack there of. As it stands right now there is no long term investment, you just have the Warbonds, levelling up is pointless past I think level 30. Helldivers needs some kind of long term reward system, something to spend samples on or a reason to explore the maps. And why theres no dedicated horde mode I have no idea…I think I said this before but it took 8 years to build and release HD2 and even now a year later it feels like a Early Access game albeit one with a excellent foundation.
