I've been seeing this a lot, but I don't get where it's coming from. I've been playing Civ4 night and day since it came out a week and a half ago, and I've never had a single problem.
I bought AoE3 yesterday, and it kept stuttering and crashing on my 2.4ghz P4 with a 64mb Radeon 9100 card and 1gb of ram. I realize this machine has aged in the year and a half I bought it, but it should still run RTS games, right? Wrong. I took it back today for Liberty City Stories. And this is why I buy about one PC game per year...
If this is the case, I doubt your machine could come close to running Civ 4 in any satisfactory manner. Fuck, FEAR runs (and looks) better on my machine.
"Age of Empires III requires a 1400 MHz (1.4 Ghz) processor. This computer appears to have only a 1000 MHz (1.0 GHz) processor installed.... This warning may appear on certain processors that dynamically reduce processor speed to save power (such as a notebook running on batteries). "
I AM on a laptop, and this has a 2.0GHz processor. I am plugged in right now.
Haven't played AOE3, only watched it, but the gameplay seemed to be lacking, I don't know why.. It didn't help that you had to play the game zoomed in way too much either.
Civ4 is GOTY material though, it's like electronic crack..
It worked for me. I found out about it reading some AOE3 forums. Some guy in Europe noticed that everytime his game crashed, the mp3 file "LeisurelyBrows" wasplaying. Sure enough, once I deleted it, the game runs completely stable for me now.
Ok... I've played AoE III and Civ IV for a fair amount of time, and I can clearly say that Civ IV is a much better single player game, and much deeper.
and AoE III is very good for quick full of action multiplayer sessions.
btw AoE III CE ROCKS... the box is just HUUUUGEEEE and it has TONS of great shit in it. it really worth the extra $10
Can't really compare these two games IMO... one excels in multiplayer (aoe) and the other's single player is the very definition of addictive. I'd let that be my guide.
i just bought AoEIII today. i wish I hadn't. I was hoping it would be different from other RTS games I've played, but it isn't. It essentially plays exactly the same as far as I can tell. I guess this genre just isn't my cup of tea.
And there were some really annoying sound glitches as well. Various sounds would pop in and out, the volume would change suddenly from barely audible to ear drum busting, and sounds wouldn't begin or end correctly (get cut off).
going to return it to EB tomorrow and see if I can swap it for Civ instead. hopefully that game doesn't screw me over too. i wonder how many times I can return games to EB one after the other until I get something I like... heh.
Yeah, don't expect a drastic change from other RTS games. All RTS's have been the same to me since Red Alert, but the beauty is in the details! The home city adds a lot IMO.
