Help me Decide. DS now or wait for a deal?

I've been moving back and forth with the DS for many months now. I was going to get one last year but got a PSP instead, which I loaned to a friend who loaned to his friend and I don't expect to seeit for the next 5 years.

When Nintendo did the electric blue/Mario 64 promo, I was tempted, but there were no games of interest out at the time. Right now, there's the price drop, dogs and Advance Wars. But as late as last week, I was telling myself to wait until MK DS and Wi-Fi on-line before jumping in.

I'd like to get some feedback on this. Anyone think Nintendo will have a promo out for November/December or is this the best time to pick up a DS?

Well, Nintendo just dropped the price, so I doubt it'll drop again this year. However, you can bet that some stores will be offering a bundle for the X-mas shoppers.

edit: Especially if sales are poor.

I'm going to wait for Mario Kart myself. And hope they release the white DS here by then, so I don't have to import it. Then maybe down the road I can fetch Advance Wars DS for cheap.

If there´s only AWDS that interests you, I´d wait at last until october. Then get the system plus AWDS, and the month after, Mario Kart DS. IF not, wait until Mario Kart is released. One game alone won´t make you happy, be it whatever it is.

They just recently dropped the price, so I wouldn't expect much else this year. But I'm waiting for Castlevania to purchase mine.

Get a DS just before Christmas comes. By then, there'll probably be some good promotions with the DS and basically the entire fall line-up (the big titles anyway) are going to hit gamestands everywhere.

I doubt there'll be another price drop, though. Maybe a DS + Mario for 129.99.

There will probably be some killer Black Friday deals on the DS and probably some packages with games. Depends on how long you want to wait and how much you want to save though. I'm sure the deals wouldn't be on newer games (though I could picture a Nintendogs packages). I don't foresee another price drop so you wouldn't be saving money on the system itself but free games would be free games.

Deku, there might be a DS promo for November/December, at least in the US (I believe you're in Canada). Every year as far as I remember, stores like Toys R Us, Best Buy and maybe Target offered a free GBA game with a system - I believe it was Super Mario Advance 4 with a gold GBASP in 2003, a Shrek game with the SP at Best Buy last year, and I forget the rest. It wouldn't be unreasonable to assume that those retailers might do this again with the DS, but then again it might be the GB Micro that gets this treatment. If I had to make a bet what would be a free game with a DS this winter, it would be Mario 64 DS again or maybe nintendogs.

He's not in the States. America, as far as I know, is the only one that has a "Black Friday".

Even if there is a deal come November, he should be able to take back a receipt for the previous 30 days and get in on it. So I'd say get one in October.

Personally I would wait for Mario kart in November.

Unless Nintendo are really stupid (which is possible) then I'm sure you can expect to see black and white DS's bundled with Mario Kart and usb wifi access point dongles (if you need or want them).

To be quite honest, I've been a bit jealous of people with their Nintendogs. I read the "How's your dogs holding up" thread and somehow felt like I might be interested in dogs now, and i haven't really even cared for it before.

I wonder if I waited till the fall whether people will still be taking care of their dogs.

Edit: Yeah, and I'm in Canada right now. The country sending a fleet to invade NO.

Oh you're in Canada, nm.

But for everyone else that has a Fry's near you, they have a DS w/ Madden 06 and World Championship Poker bundle for $129. Today only though.

I would buy it now. I wouldn't want to fight off post-Thanksgiving/Christmas shoppers in order to get one. 129.99 is a can't beat proposition, as long as you get something that's actually good with it like Advance Wars DS and Kirby: Canvas Curse.

Tired of using my nephew's NDS to play the games I bought, so I am wondering the same thing too. There's a deal at Fry's for Nintendo DS with Madden 06 for 129.95 for today only. Should I go buy it now or wait for a better deal?

hey, all im saying is, Electroplankton and Advance Wars is an awesome start.

from there, you have quite a few good choices already that will add variety to your library more than anything else.

I finally bit when the Blue one came out w/the free Mario. Personally I'd suggest looking in-store at Walmart, to see if they still have any of those bundles left, since they'll be at the new price. If not, I think their website still has the bundle for 129, but not in blue (not sure if they ship to Canada or not).

If you're not picky, you could pick up a used one at a EB/Gamestop with their saver cards for about hundred or so, and you could use the extra 30 to buy AW or whatever. They're good about letting you check out the system first for dead pixels and the like too.

My little brother sucks ass at saving money, but I recently helped him purchase a DS and am letting him pay back most of it to me as time goes on. I figured that there probably wouldn't be another major price cut or deal this year, so acting while we could find a system bundled with SM64DS for the new lower price seemed like a Good Idea.

Snagged one in really swell condition after scouring a couple EB's for $99 used. So far it's worth the price of admission. The screens handily shit all over the previous GBA incarnations, which is what I'm using it as - GBA game player.

There are still a few visibility issues that irritate me, but this is the last straw for me. No more Nintendo handhelds after this one, unless Nintendo gets their fucking act together.

PSP ahoy!

Just a random question...

Anyone have any recommendations on a full length stylus or something that could be use as one? I've tried using a mechanical pencil (with a soft tip and no lead) for a bit, and it feels MUCH better to me. I would prefer an actual stylus designed in that fashion.

There was this stylus that the IGN DS channel was talking about a while back. Problem was the stylus was like $15, I think?

I've been scouring through the channel and I've found nothing of it so far, though.

I'm waiting for the release of the white or the black DS in the US. No way am I paying $170 + S/H for a DS. EBay prices for multicolored DS units are just as much as the online retailers.

If both white and black come out at the same time, it will literally be decided with a coin toss.

I'm also hoping that at or around the holidays, there will be some tight deals for me to take advantage of.

I got one, and it works great.

That's not to scale is it? Holding the DS stylus in the same position brings it to the same place basically. Holding my mechanical pencil in that same place, however, has the other end going beyond the top of the unit (more than twice the length).

That stylus is basically the same thing as the original DS one, only it's made with metal, so it's heavier and feels better IMO. It also fits in the stylus slot of your console.

But while ordering that, they also gave me 2 extra styli:

Basically it's a pen with a soft tip made specifically for PDAs (or any touch screen devices).

They're only $2.29 + shipping for a pack of 3. So I think that would be more suitable for you.

Anybody know of a telescoping stylus that fits in the DS stylus holder? I've grown used to the regular one but on my old PDA it had a long telescoping one that felt quite nice.

I'm, personally, waiting for Christmas, either shortly before or in the Boxing Day Sales after. I'm hoping for some boxing day sales on software, either way...especially hoping for a deal on AWDS, since it seems like the kind of game that might have a bit of a deal on it after Christmas.

Yeah, I think I might wait until Boxing Day to pick one up again.

There will also be a wide varitety of games to choose from at that point.

Now.

Kirby, Meteos, Advance Wars, Nintendogs, whatever. Get it and at least one of those. Then you'll have it for the fall lineup.

No reason to wait for awesome games like Kirby: Canvas Curse, Mario 64 DS, Meteos, Advance Wars DS and Nintendogs. You might as well pick up a blue DS this week.

I got 3 DS games at the moment but am still waiting on Black Friday. Hopefully Nintendo will have released some colors that don't suck by then and I'm also gambling on there being a $99 DS deal somewhere...

you are forgetting the god of all DS games, Ouendan... ;)

PLUS Mario Kart, Animal Crossing, Castlevania...

Damn, I keep hearing about Ouendan and I hope I can find it while in NY. If anyone knows some good import stores (the only one I know is JNL Videogames in Chinatown), I would greatly appreciate it!

ask yourself this: can you spend another second of your life outside the redeeming presence of a nintendo ds console? if your answer is "yes," then you ask too little of life, my friend. go forth! LIVE!

i'm waiting for the inevitable DS upgrade much like what we got with GBA->GBASP. I may never get a DS (though some games are making it harder to resist), it really all depends on what this upgrade brings or takes away from the current DS design.

ebay are rippin you off if you buyin a import DS. i believe a DS in japan cost $130 or $120 but you end up payin $50 more through ebay. damn bastards

You can always import one from GameExpress:

White: http://www.gameexpress.com/product_detail.cfm?UPC=JW4902370509
Black: http://www.gameexpress.com/product_detail.cfm?UPC=JB4902370509

No sales tax, unless you live in New Jersey, so it'll be around 147$ after (FedEx Ground) shipping.

Why oh why did you have to link to GameExpress... That's a really good price for an import and the white is so sexy =(

If any of these titles interest you, buy. Else wait:

1. Meteos (brilliant title)
2. Daigasso! Band Brothers (import friendly, rewarding experience)
3. Jump Superstars (not v import friendly but FUN)
4. Kirby Canvas Curse (sex on toast)
5. Nintendogs (don't care much for this one myself)
6. Nanostray (mindless action)
7. Star Wars Ep III (mindless lightsabre action)

Got Jump yesterday. Like it. Nintendogs was meh, imo. I think Meteos + Kirby are must-buys, platform sellers. Haven't tried AWDS or Ouedan yet.
