Looks really interesting, even has what appears to be seamless cloud integration. Though there does appear to be some input lag from the videos I’ve seen, I think this may be the start of some cool E-Ink display word processors. The price they’re asking for (400 dollars) does seem a bit steep and with 30 dollar AlphaSmart Neo’s out there in the wild this company is going to have to do some serious convincing for writers to shell out the money they’re asking for. I’m more intrigued at the prospect of other companies picking up on the idea and giving us more options and price points.

Guessing this is for people who like typewriters or something? Or people who need literally no other functionality?

It's a distraction free word processor. It helps with productivity to not have other distractions a click away, also the E-Ink display makes it possible to write in broad daylight.

Just watched the video as I should have initially

It's not for me, but I actually like the idea

As a writer, this is a dream. My laptop has way too many distractions on it. But being able to leave the house and get work done would be a boon to my productivity.

They need a phone app though, with some way for formats. If they have screenplay formatting, I'll definitely grab one.

You would then have all of the distractions of reality around you. Is there an E-ink equivalent for life?

There's something to be said for a distraction-free way to write, but there are numerous free word processing programs that basically turn your computer into a just a typewriter without all of the modern whistles and bells. At $400 this is for rubes with more money than common sense. I imagine this is their target customer:

I hate transferring with a passion. I have a ratty spiral that has front to back scrawls, and I just usually end up just saying fuck it, and going in a new direction.

When I pick up one of those HP Streams, I'll definitely be installing this, thank you.

Lol.

This post is so dumb i can't believe it.

O wait. Yes I can.

Good way to reduce my WPM at least 400%, get hand cramps, struggle to read my own writing/corrections, and make losing my progress so much easier.

the point is that if you want to go lo-tech why not go all the way

are you seriously that distracted by all the fancy colours and lights on your laptop

I just discovered Borderless Windowed mode, so yea, it's pretty easy to tab into a game or browse this fucking place instead of doing work.

A keyboard is so much faster than pen and paper, not to mention that I wouldn't need to carry stacks of paper, or worry about hand cramps as soon, and read my own writing which gets lazier by the page. Plus, I don't spend a day looking back and forth from a screen to a page, and can instantly edit and improve my shit on the fly.

I've tried all the distraction free word processors out there, as far as I know, free and paid and I still have the problem that all the distracting PC functionality is just a quick alt+tab away. So, that being said I like the idea of a dedicated distraction free writing tool, especially with an e-ink screen and cloud integration. However, for the price they're asking I'd expect something a lot more professional looking and a whole lot less cheap. The name's pretty cringe-worthy, as well.

For writers who are interested in something similar, check out the Alphasmart Neo. Old ass technology, but this thing is brilliant.

Great full size keyboard (not quite as good as a mechanical keyboard, but the keys have a very satisfying click) incredible battery life, and the only thing you can do with it is write (or type lol)

Probably the best investment I made in my writing career. Tripled my writing output now that I'm no longer distracted.

And you'd rather spend $400+ to fix this rather than, say, work on your own bad working habits.

If I have the change by then, and haven't found an alternative, I might. I'll be picking up one of those HP Streams in a bit, and I'm gonna see if that q10 program runs on it alright, then I wouldn't sweat it. Plus, it doesn't even meet all my needs as they've billed it, so if anything, I'd probably pick up the refresh model with all the customer feedback. I really need format tools, and this doesn't look like it has it, so it'd be a nonstarter from the get.

I'd get if this was down in the $100-200 range that it's low enough to warrant a curiosity purchase, but the whole thing really seems like trying to fix a problem for people with more money than impulse control.

Anything with the phrase "beautiful retro design" when describing a device with a keyboard and e-ink screen is targeting exactly one demographic.

Alphasmart rules!

Seems like a needless product. I watched the video and as the interviewer said, you'll just pull out your phone to browse facebook.

If you really struggle with distractions, just turn off your WiFi.

Thing looks hideous but I could actually see myself using something similar to it to avoid distractions. Even thought about buying a typewriter a while ago but they (and their supplies) are hard to come by these days.

Oh lawd jesus. Not really buying the whole distraction-less thing either, it's not the laptop's fault you go browsing gaming forums.

Can you get your work off of these things easily? Can you work on separate projects (i.e. is there a file system you can navigate)?

1. Yes, all you need is a USB a to b cable, open up your word processing program of choice and it will send whatever you wrote to it.

2. You can work on 8 simultaneous files. The designated 'File' buttons ( top row ) allow easy navigation between files.

There is zero boot up time and you don't even have to save your work, you can just turn it off when you're done and continue where you left off next time you turn it back on. Also, runs on 3 AA batteries that last forever. You can find them on eBay for 30 bucks or less.

I've been curious about those Alphasmart things for a while. I heard something about them a few years back, and I currently have the Q10 word processor set up on my PC to mimic certain aspects of the Alphasmart... Basically, I use a giant font so that I can't see much of my writing on the page at any given time, which keeps me from going back and fiddling with things constantly during my first draft. Then I transfer the material to another word processor periodically, and do a light edit once I have around 1000 words built up.

I had no idea it was so easy to get your work from an Alphasmart onto a PC, and I didn't realize they were so cheap. I might have to buy one.

Please do, these things are incredible and you can get them dirt cheap on ebay. I bought 6 myself, they stopped making them so eventually it'll be hard to find them.

When you connect the Alphasmart to your PC, it basically retypes everything into your word processor of choice. Pretty cool seeing your novel type itself :P

I like the idea, but the implementation of it is pretty bad. Make it a laptop with big screem and I'm game.
