Her Story |OT| Type M for Murder

Played about an hour last night with my girlfriend and enjoyed it quite a bit so far.

Just a question (unrelated to the story, but I'll spoiler tag it just in case as its related to mechanics)

Is it obvious when one progresses through the game/story, etc? So far, I have just gone through various video clips through search terms. Just wondering if there is an obvious sense of progression/resolution/credits, or if entirely non-linear.

Cheers.

The game does have
a way to indicate progress, and there is a clear ending. But it's up to you whether you have achieved resolution or not.

So...what I assume is an end-game spoiler:

I recieved a "chit chat" notification. I assume this triggers the ending, but I still have about 20 video clips remaining to see.

Made my way through it for a few hours. I'm pretty sure I now have a good grasp on the story. Past 50% but not at 75% yet. Not sure what exactly I need to type in to get the rest of the footage. A little stumped, really at this point now that I know the general sense of the story. So not sure how to jump into spoilertown.

Arguably the best part of the game was while I was taking notes I actually got to write out "but what does it mean???" and underlined it a few times while I was trying to figure everything out.

Yes.
It's up to you whether you want to trigger it or keep going. If you do trigger it, you can always go back and look at more videos after the ending.

Loving this so far. Simultaneously nostalgic in the era it evokes and novel in the approach it takes.
Can feel a bit forced at time. Maybe that's just the character being ditsy. Why is this woman talking to the police about her Visa and Ceefax adventures? Having to wait until sun down before I play some more.

anyone know how this might/should run on a 2012 macbook air?
I can't help but think about the irony of a 2012 Macbook not being able to run a game that emulates Windows 93 and is essentially just a media player and search engine.

Thankfully, that irony doesn't exist.

Cool concept, really like it, but the user session feature is a pain in the arse to handle as it doesn't let you drag and drop order but instead swaps scenes around. Unnecessary busywork if you intend to build a coherent timeline.

I'd have liked to have been able to navigate the database with cursor keys or mouse and replay any clip I'd already previously found.

Same, but once you're done with the game you can always just go the steam game folder, and watch all the clips there in chronological order.

I've really enjoyed this, however I have 100% of the clips, yet three achievements haven't popped related to particular video clips (I had to look them up).

Not a deal breaker for me because I found the experience so refreshing, but if you're an achievement hunter beware of playing on a MacBook Pro.

I played on a MacBook Pro and had no problems getting all of the achievements, so I don't think it had anything to do with that.

Not sure what it is then - i've also had a few crashes with the game at start up (for ref, i'm using a '14 MBP i5 with solid state memory and 8gb Ram).

Edit; Lazyproblems, did you use OSX or run it via bootcamp?

I used OSX, no crashes or anything on my end. Looks like same specs. I'm using 10.9.5 if that makes a difference?

Her Story and Five Nights at Freddy's have totally reversed my opinion on fmv games. I got so burnt out on them in the 90's, but these 2 games have proved to me that you can still tell a really good story with fmv, and it seems like they are cheap to make.

So this interested me. Went ahead and bought it on the official site. The download page I was given in my email doesn't work. Direct download link is broken, torrent link comes up as invalid in my torrent client :/

Although I finished the game at just slightly above 50% it was one of the most fascinating games I've played in recent years. It is a masterpiece of fragmented storytelling and it would be fascinating to see the thought process into mapping out a project like this.

Sounds like your credit card might have been declined. It happened to me once and they revoked the download page and I had to email support. I have a lot of issues with stripe on humblebundle.com so I don't use that payment method anymore.

It must have been a server issue, tried the link they sent me again today and it's working fine now! Downloading as I speak :)

Just finished it. I feel like this is one of those games that's more fun discussing with other people rather than actually playing it. I'd lie if I said I was bored throughout, but the quality of the story and writing clicked with me just after I read some other people's thoughts and theories online. I wasn't blown away by it, but it's an intriguing and fun experience that takes a lot of risks and certainly had me interested in the overall narrative.

Just finished playing and am cleaning up the story. That was fantastic. It's especially interesting going back on earlier clips and seeing the little clues they left in. Can't really say anything else without spoiling anything, so I'll save it for the spoiler thread.

This is really something else.

Just bought and finished it today. Really enjoyed it. Even at £5 I think it's a bit too much since I have no reason to o back and play it now (after 4 hours on playing and then 30 minutes of researching the ending).
Great game but I think a YouTube let's play is enough.

I never understood people's reasoning for things like this. The $8 you spent on that 4 1/2 hours surly kept you entertained.

I mean, you spend more on a sub at a sub shop ffs. Go see a 2h movie and a snack... $20 please...

$8 for 4h of entertainment isn't 'too much' in my mind. But let me be clear.. I'm not attacking you. We all value things differently. Just commenting on it is all :)

Normally I wouldn't care much if someone just said to watch a game on youtube walkthrough/LP, but that's missing the entire point of the game, as you're just robbing the actual exercise of the game and either watching someone else figure it out or watching all the clips strung together in sequential order for you. Normally this doesn't matter but the entire exercise the game is trying to accomplish requires your input in one way or another. This would be one of the few games I would never recommend someone to just simply watch.

Agreed. $5 for 4 hours of entertainment is a steal.

Yeah pretty much. I think this falls into the same topic as The Order 1886 with replay-ability or how you define time and money invested. It's a pretty grey area with many factors to consider- especially with games I do like. I spent more money on Limbo on XBLA and that was shorter. This only arose because I was trying to convince a friend to buy it. Phoenix Wright/Professor Layton/Point and Click/Visual Novel etc is very much the same thing.
For me playing it though and the time I spent on it, I enjoyed it but I have need to return to it. I do hope we get more like this.

I got this last night and finished with 100% today. I really enjoyed my time with it, I especially liked the old interface with the staticy screen and keyboard typing noises. The fragmented story telling is great, something I wish was used more in games. I'd love to have another game of this type, only more ambitious (more actors involved, branching storyline) because my only gripe with this game is that it's not very ambitious.

As for the story,
put me in the camp who believe it was twins. Eve got pregnant by Simon, and when it was all revealed, and Simon bought the same mirror for 'Eve' (Hannah dressed as Eve) that he'd bought her earlier, she lost it and they fought and she killed him. Eve then covers for Hannah while she escapes from the police. The whole twin story might seem a bit crazy but I believe it more than the simple 'she had split personalities, everything was made up' (which conveniently casts aside too much stuff, such as the tattoo and bruise - the tattoo of which is clearly NOT on Hannah's arm in the interview where her sleeve is very high, above where the tattoo on Eve is)
but I do appreciatea story that can be interpreted in different ways like this.

Anyway, I'd give it 8/10, worth playing.

I'm also in the camp of it being two people. There is a scene during Eve's confession sequence when you hear someone off-screen and possibly in another room shout "Hannah" as if calling her into another interrogation room.
It's clip D185. I've posted this before after most of the commotion has died down around the game, so I never got a response or heard other people's opinion on this.

Maybe because it's close to GotY, and this should be in the running, people will have renewed interest in discussion.

Such a great game, well deserved. Convinced my bf to buy it shortly after I finished it when it came out. Great performance, really unique experience.
