Hey Microsoft:Why *not* XBOX2? (name of console)

Do you think people will actually associate XBOX2 with PlayStation2-level hardware if both of them have "2" in the title???

I am not sure if they are going to call the unit XBOX 360 or not, but it seems to me MS might be underestimating the intelligence of their gaming audience, most of which are teens or older..

I think they should go will XBOX2 or perhaps XENON

The problem is not the gaming audience. Sure we know what Xbox 2 is, but the mainstream could actually be fooled into thinking Xbox 2 is less powerful than PS3. It sounds stupid but from a marketing standpoint I can see why MS would want to avoid it.

I'm sure it will be changed. you're throwing more math out there than casual gamers can comprehend with Xbox 360...then again NEXTBOX is worserest

I know it's two different industries, but they prolly won't call it Xenon since Intel uses that name already for one of its processor lines.

Intel is using Xeon methinks....Xenon is an inert gas (i think)

It's stupid no matter what. Do they really think even the most newbie casual games goes to the store and says, "Dur, 3 is more than 2, so I'll get the 3 Mr. Gaming store man."

maybe the reason they don't want to go with "2" is because they.. don't want to.

just because playstation uses a number between versions doesnt mean xbox has to.

Justin, you're starting to scare me :lol :lol

Think of parents ("Now which one did Jimmy say...well, 3 is higher than 2, it's probably better") and ultra-casuals ("Madden on Xbox2 or PS3...3's gotta be better!") and that scenario doesn't seem so silly, especially if the graphical differences between the two consoles are negligible.

Also think of the misinformation just waiting to be spread by jealous fanboys on the playground, the dastardly EB clerk with a pro-Playstation agenda and lines of ignorant customers waiting to ask him his opinion, etc. Even if it only affected 100 people, why take the risk?

You are giving the general public too much credit. You would be surprised what kind of questions i hear when i go to EB.

<scratches head>

Do not underestimate the uncanny ability of some people to prove you wrong!

Anyway Xenons fine...I suspect that 360 name was closely faught by Xbox 2005 SP1...

i knew paying attention in chemistry would pay off....i didn't think it would be on GAF though

History
(Gr. xenon, stranger) Discovered in 1898 by Ramsay and Travers in residue left after evaporating liquid air. Xenon is a member of the so-called noble or "inert" gases. It is present in the atmosphere to the extent of about one part in twenty million. Xenon is present in the Martian atmosphere to the extent of 0.08 ppm. the element is found in the gases evolved from certain mineral springs, and is commercially obtained by extraction from liquid air.

Isotopes
Natural xenon is composed of nine stable isotopes. In addition to these, 20 unstable isotopes have been characterized. Before 1962, it had generally been assumed that xenon and other noble gases were unable to form compounds. Evidence has been mounting in the past few years that xenon, as well as other members of zero valance elements, do form compounds. Among the "compounds" of xenon now reported are sodium perxenate, xenon deuterate, xenon hydrate, difluoride, tetrafluoride, and hexafluoride. Xenon trioxide, which is highly explosive, has been prepared. More than 80 xenon compounds have been made with xenon chemically bonded to fluorine and oxygen. Some xenon compounds are colored. Metallic xenon has been produced, using several hundred kilobars of pressure. Xenon in a vacuum tube produces a beautiful blue glow when excited by an electrical discharge.

Uses
The gas is used in making electron tubes, stoboscopic lamps, bactericidal lamps, and lamps used to excite ruby lasers that generate coherent light. Xenon is used in the nuclear energy field in bubble chambers, probes, and other applications where a high molecular weight is of value. The perxenates are used in analytical chemistry as oxidizing agents. 133Xe and 135Xe are produced by neutron irradiation in air cooled nuclear reactors. 133Xe has useful applications as a radioisotope. The element is available in sealed glass containers of gas at standard pressure. Xenon is not toxic, but its compounds are highly toxic because of their strong oxidizing characteristics.

xenon is used in super bright lamps used for deep sea observation

Xbox. I hated the name first, but it has grown on me. I find a lot of casual gamers or parents catches the name pretty easily. Even on news. Xbox. I have to give them a kudos for a catchy name. I doubt Xenon would be as catchy as Xbox, really... (although it does sound infinite more cooler) - but Xbox360. Don't know... I think Xbox2 is very safe bet to keep the current momentum going.

I'm not saying they have to do anything. I think Xenon is a fantastic name. Much better than the wholly uncreative XBox 2 or the "ohshitwehavetohavesomethinghigherthan3" XBox 360.

Also, about Madden 2006 on XB2/PS3. Unless you are a parent buying totally blind, you'll realize that the graphics are the same. PS2 over XBox hasn't had any effect or been any concern this gen, so why should PS3 over XBox 2 be a concern?

I guess I just never realized the "lowest common denominator" of marketing was so fucking low.

It`s not gonna be called Xenon. You really think they`re gonna drop the Xbox brand? Change the online service to Xenon Live? Just No.

whatever it's called I hope they don't take the name literally for the product design. last thing we need is a round console (Xbox 360).

playstation is really a well thought out name. Station balances out teh kiddienes of Play

The next MS Console will certainly have Xbox in the title. They've spent too much time, and money, building the brand to move away from it now. Xbox 2 sounds fine, so does NeXt Box, but I think Xbox 360 just sounds stupid. So, they'll probably go with that.

Anyone who seriously thinks that NextBox is a good name is a marketing dumbass.
I'd be interested in hearing the problems with NextBox or Xbox Next. Just that it'd be hard to follow up, or...? Not all of us are marketing prodigies, though many think they are.

It's too much of a chore to say, probably resulting in people slacking and calling it 'Nexbox'. It just doesn't work phonetically. That, and the whole thing of how you would follow up the Nextbox brand.

I really like Xenon, though it's clear that's not going to happen. Xbox 360 is just horrible though, I'd much rather they went with something descriptive like Xbox HD or Xbox Evolution instead.

What about Play-Stat-ion? Oh, and following up Xbox Next is easy: Xbox Future, Xbox Forever, Xbox Infinity, etc. ;)

It pisses me off when these type of console name games are played because companies believe the average consumer is too dumb. Then I think of all the people that have bought Army Men games, and I begin to understand... *sigh*

How about Xbox 24-7. As in how often we'll be playing it! ;)

Heheheh. Must be nice! ;)

Stupid job. Actually, it's not that stupid. If I didn't have it - no games for me! :lol :lol
