Not sure if anyone around here really cares about such things, but the word on the street is that the Big Apple Anime Fest is no more.
The last show was 2003, which I missed, but I heard it was excellent, even better than the previous year's, which I did attend and can say was pretty darn good. There was one scheduled in 2004, but it was cancelled due to the Republican Nation Convention.
The official site said there would be an update at the end of 2004, but there's been no word since. My contact at ICON (where I'll be appearing once again as a speaker, but more on that later) was trying to get ahold of the persons in charge of the BAAF to exchange contacts, but they've all but vanished. He did some research and found a post on some message board and someone who claimed to be associated with the con said it was indeed history.
I've tried looking for it myself, and the only thing I found is some posts in some cosplay site that says the same basic thing, though they all mentioned NewType and one other site that has the 2005 show listed as going on Sep 2 to 5. Most seem skeptical of the news.
Well if this is true, its a real shame. I really enjoyed the show and appreciated the topnotch, professional feel to the whole thing. I'm assuming it must have broken the bank to hold the event at Time Square, but all the attendees really appreciated the convenience and glitz, plus it was just great that NYC anime and manga fans could gather somewhere that wasn't across state lines.
