Hey, the original Dragon Ball is pretty funny.

I'm not a big fan of 'anime humour' (Generalising, but you know what I mean), but I randomly decided to watch an episode of the original Dragon Ball series, and it's actually quite funny. I've read one or two chapters of Dr.Slump, and I like Akira Toriyama's slightly weird, stupid sense of humour. I think they've been the only anime/manga works I've laughed at.

(I know what's coming up)

Dragon Ball > Dragon Ball Z

:lol Now a big fan of Z but I did enjoy Dragon Ball I just wish they could re-release it uncut/remastered here in america.

word.. the first arc is still edited/dub only right?

Yeah, it is really funny. Because of it's popularity, and how it often gets overshadowned by it's sequel series, it often gets overlooked when people talk about great manga.

The original manga was more of a parody on martial arts films. Later on, the series became more serious and grim, and began to take itself much more seriously.

I liked DB more than Z because of its focus more on martial arts. Z was all about who had the higher power level. I'm still a fan of both though. =D

It's actually kind of shocking to see the tone of the series change so radically. I mean, how did it get from that...to that? I wonder what it was like for fans who followed the series in its entirety, from beginning to end (Z, perhaps GT, I dunno).

It also must have been quite sad to see all the lovable DB cast be phased out in favour of Super Saiyans (Although Vegeta is the one reason why I watched Z)

I actually re-watching the DB series from beginning to end. I am currently halfway through DragonBall and I couldn't agree more. DB>DBZ>DBGT

Its kind of a tradition. I watch the three series all the way through about once a year.

Oh, and I definitely teared up for the end of DBZ and DBGT.

Oh, Roshi, how I luv ya.

This also kind of reminds me of Mahoujin Guru Guru, although DB came first.

EDIT: Omg, the dub actually adds to the hilarity. The accents are so funny!

Dragon Ball had a homosexual pedophile as a character. I think that speaks for itself.
Sailor Moon does too, and it's a tranny. ^^

Anyway, I've never watched a second of anything Dragon Ball. >_> My friend warned me of it. :(

Dragonball kicks the shit out of DBZ. This is a fact too few people realize sadly.

The dub for it was actually surprisingly good as well, at least until halfway through the series. Then they seem to just get lazy or something.

So, I'm guessing that with GT, they tried to go 'back to basics', while retaining 'Z' elements. I remember watching the first two or so episodes of GT, in which Pan, Goku, and Trunks search for the Dragon Balls, which I'm guessing is supposed to be parallel to the first DB arc (Even has Pilaf). Where did it go wrong? Was it simply unfunny?

I'm really intrigued, although I'm supposed to have 'grown out' of Dragon Ball.

Original DB pretty much kicks the shit out of all shounens even today(Including DBZ). Funny how the formula has just been getting worse. Its amazing really. It was hilarious, great fighting, moved at a nice pace. Everything was just so right in it.

Dragon Ball >>> Dragon Ball Z

Dragonball has a certain whimsy and sense of adventure that was all but abandoned for DBZ's more "serious", fairly humourless battles.
