My sony earbuds just ate the dust. So now i cant listen to anything. I'm thinking about buying a good pair of headphones. I need some suggestions. I dont like them too big cause it gets really hot over here. So i was looking for something small.

like these two

SBCHP460_00_webImageFullSize.jpg

Philips Dj style $39.99
MDRV500DJ.jpg

Some sony studio monitors $69.99

those are the type. I know we have some well versed people here that know they're headphones. So i ask for help. I dont know what i should be looking for really. I listen to just about everything, and i love good bass.

Just as long as they arent over 70 i think i can manage.

Scrow: have you found a place that sells the replacable ear cups? I've always wanted to get something like those so i can get some "CLEAN" ear cups finally. Thats why i've been using earbuds and then cleaning them. Thats the reason i dont want to get anything really big that fits over the ear. Just something that covers the ear like those.

i haven't had the need to replace them so i don't know. if i ever do need to replace them I'd probably just call whoever distributes sennheiser products in australia and ask them, or just buy a new pair since i've had these for quite a while now.

and yeah, i was the same as you. didn't want ear buds (don't like the idea of shoving things into my ear canal) and those things which cover 90% of your head are too cumbersome, so these were a good medium.

Etymotic ER6i or Shure E3's own the shit out of the Sony EX71/81 earbuds, and the Shure's are just as comfortable, provide more isolation, and sound better than the Sony's.

But i cant stand earbuds. They hurt my ears to hell and back. I plan on using them for my work out and i find that my ears hurt like hell after wearing those things for prlonged periods of times. I'm probably just a pussy, but it just doesnt feel right.

And girl where you getting all that money? Prosituting?

Did you get the chance to audition some Shure E3s in the end? Awesome.

And if you're looking for a good pair of headphones, you really can't go wrong with a pair of Grado Labs SR60 which are their entry-level headphones. I'd personally advise skipping the SR80 and going for the SR125 or Alessandro MS1 if you want to spend more on your headphones. :)

But the SR60 are an awesome pair of headphones if you don't wanna break your wallet, like the retro stylings and aren't looking to get a serious pair of audiophile cans.

You get the most for your money going with the SR60.

If you can stomach the costs, listen to dance music or another kind of music that requires warm, rich bass response, and want the best sounding headphones out there, the answer is simple....

hdj1000-b.jpg

PIONEER HDJ-1000
+Excellent Frequency response
+Capable of handling INSANE amounts of power
+Replaceable cable assembly

- Slightly fragile
- Expensive at 135-150
- Some people prefer a headphone like the Sennheiser HD-25, however, I like the Pios.

another minus is you need a fucking neck brace on to hold your head up straight. jesus christ that thing is bulky and clumsy looking.

Obviously you are not a DJ.

Everything on the Pios are padded. They are made to swivel/bend/adjust to be comfortable for long dj sets. The ear pieces have great isolation, are superbly padded, and direct sound nicely into your ear. The headband is padded, with extra padding on the edges to rest against the neck for one ear monitoring. They also have an absorbant material on the inner to not get slick and slide on your head.

Finally, they have a stereo/mono switch, so you can have both cups output a mixed mono signal if you are doing one year or sharing a cup with someone else.

That being said, they are big, but no bigger than Sony v700s, etc.

umm, yeah. i'm just a geek with a PC who prefers to use headphones instead of crappy intrusive (to other people) speakers. i don't need headphones that will make me breakfast in bed and i don't think B'z-chan does either...

CNet reviews aren't really worth shit.

Take a gander around forums like Head-Fi.org for decent user opinions.

forget the reviews. i was too lazy to type the names of the headphones. those two punish the competition.

Well, the Shure and the Etymotic are just a tad more expensive.

I got a pair of Grado SR-325's. Superb.

Not freakin cheap though.

Dumb question -- is there ANYWHERE you can go to actually try on expensive headphones before you buy them? Most over-the-ear headphones are extremely uncomfortable for me, and cause my ears to hurt after a few minutes of use. Unfortunately, most headphones are either sold online, or are in plastic in a B&M store, so I've never taken the risk of buying expensive headphones that might never get used.

Goodguys started doing this a while back, but they just dont have the selection to make it worth wild.

And you guys really are out there on these headphones. I go from perfect, to fucking transformers with neck braces.

Everyone here is recommending closed headphones, but there aren't too many good ones unless you look into canal phones, which get quite expensive. I personally recommend the Sennheiser PX100. They are VERY portable, comfortable, and sound fantastic for a relatively low price (something like $30-40 US.) They provide a warm, smooth sound with a perfect amount of bass which has a nice thump to it but is seperated from the mix so it doesn't overwhelm anything else. Great for all kinds of music and it has a nice musicality to it which brings your music to life. Most everyone say that the PX200 sounds a bit worse but is closed, although many people have trouble finding a good seal with them. The PX100 should also be one of the more available good quality phones. I tested and bought mine at Radioshack.
